Since I'm going to be in highschool next year, I was thinking that I should get some better reeds. The other oboe players are all seniors and they graduated...*tears*, but one of them told me to get a harder reed. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions for what types of reeds I should get?

There are a ton of different brands that you just have to try. The hardness labels aren't standardized, so ignore them and just experiment. Just pick something and try. Everyone's different. I play significantly harder bassoon reeds than anyone I know, even my former teacher. The bassoonist I went to high school with played soft, thin reeds. We all have good results but it's just a matter of what's comfortable and what works for each individual.

Well I am an oboeist that tutors with different college professors and they ahve showed me different types of reeds. While most reeds in stores do play, I ahve found that ones that are made from an acually person that you order it from always come out better. I get mine from a lady in Michigan, which I live no where near. I can place my order over e-mail and as soon as my money gets there she sends the reed(s). I would suggest of finding someone who makes reeds or knows of someone who makes reed. The quality is always better and they always last better. While they may come at a higher price they are well worth it. Hope Ive been of some help. If ya need more assistance or want to know more dont hesitate to pm me!

personally, i like Jones or Selmer. I do not like La Voz. this spring it was hard for me to get my hands on reeds. there was a shortage, apparantly because I bought the last 2 oboe reeds from the store, and they said Selmer themselves couldn't get any. and i use medium. I work best with that. But i would experiment.
Although my teach says harder reed=warmer sound, experimenting with your embouchure on a softer reed will tweak the sound a tad.

oh, and High Five Oboe Player!

The person i recieve my reeds from is amazing! She lives in michigan and will mail the reed to wherever you live as long as you mail shipping money along with the money for the reed. While her reeds are a little expensive they are worth it. If your intrested Id be more than happy to give you her e-mail address so she could send you information in the mail! PM me if youd like her e-mail!
