I don't know about other bands out there, but I DO know that in my band, there is a very strange superiority complex among sections. Now, being a tuba, I'm naturally going to give you OUR food chain, top being the highest up there, and bottom being the lesser beings. Lemme know how your band is! (last minute note, this is marching band)

1. Tubas (Woooohoooooooo!!!!!!!!)
2. Trombones
3. Baritones
4. Trumpets
5. Battery
6. French Horns
7. Alto Saxes
8. Low Woodwinds
9. Clarinets
10. Flutes
11. Pit

This is the low brass' marching band food chain:

1. Baritone/Euphonium/Trombone (we sorta group together b/c there's so few...and we're just cool like that cool )

2. Tubas (lower than other low brass only because of past issues (three graduated this year; one could play well, one read treble, and didn't manage to do very well, and the other could only read drum beats...on a good day...) and Billy's just awesome)

3. Clarinets (okay people, plus four of five are my friends XD)

4. Battery (OMFG they are so HOT!!! And the guys walk around before rehearsals with no tops on, and only in boxers before competitions!!! heart )

5. Trumpets (some cute kids + a couple ripped ones (though have nothing on the battery!), so they make up for the obnoxious ones XD)

6. Pit (GO MR. TABASCO MAN!!! (and remember to drink enough water next time! (got heat stroke while at six flags sad )))

7. French Horns (one is a friend, the others are okay)

8. Flutes (too high voices, talk too fast, and can't hear, though nice people (go Amy! pirate ))

9. Alto Saxes (SHUT UP V.A.!!! rofl )

10. Low Woodwinds (a.k.a. Tenor Sax, maybe a Bari)(ewww...it's Matt... XD)

11. Guard (we don't tell them they're this low because we don't fancy being bludgeoned to death ninja )

12. Picolos (screechy and give you headaches (both instrument and instrumentalist stare (only good thing is pics are so small you can get away with "accidentally" stepping on them XD))

1. Clarinets. Almost all the drum majors normally are from the clarinets, too.
2. Picollos/flutes because of the features they get. Sometimes they are all in a bad mood together, but they don't take it out on the other sections.
3. Trumpets and Horns (We work together and are near each other a lot).
4. Saxophones/low woodwinds
5. Percussion. That is pit and all.
6. Euphoniums and Tubas. They share their own room. They are funny and nice people... and the band president is a euph and one of my friends and the euph SL. That bumped it up a little.
7. Trombones - They are, for the most part, just mean people. One of our DMs is from this section, but not even he could save them and he is an amazing person. He and I are friends.
8. Far away from the rest, guard. They don't socialize with the band much. They stay in their group during water breaks. However, we were required to recruit one/person last year. The guard wasn't told to do that... just the band.

In what sense are you ranking them? Who gets the best parts? Who's the most trustworthy/responsible? Who's the best marcher? the best musicians? There are a lot of ways to rank and they'd all end up with different results, at least in the band that I work with. There's some continuity through the years but there's also change based on the individuals. Not to mention that I think the students are incredibly biased and would give very different answers than each other and than myself and the rest of the staff.
