Krissie He so wished now that responsibility had never fallen on him. He was failing and he was sure his father would be disappointed in him. And his lost love had left him heartbroken. Darin sat underneath the shade of a tree in the hot afternoon close to the house. He wouldn't dare leave or wander far for the way things were right now. And right now, he was simply feeling sorry for himself. Aggression had built up against Laurent and it'd only be a matter of time before he snapped again. He tried to clear his mind, but things weighed too heavily on him to allow him to just sweep them aside. He so missed Enivali, his beloved. So for now, he would simply sit here and wallow in his own misery. Staring blankly down at the soft patch of dirt in front of him, he didn't move, or really blink. Aradia From several yards away, laying close to the grass to avoid attention, Brighid watched Darin, wondering what was on his mind that weighed so heavily on him now. Oh, she knew that there were a great many issues he had to deal with. His father had run away, abandoning all of them to turmoil and confusion without his leadership, leaving him and his few siblings to run the great clan. Laurent was attracting more than a few of the females to him - Brighid herself admitted that the green male had a kind of charm that drew girls to him, but wouldn't say it out loud - and Darin didn't particularly like him. Then there were all the other day to day stresses... And of course, there was Enivali. Beautiful, vibrant Enivali. His missing love, the mother of his children. The woman that would always outshine Brighid, as far as Darin was concerned. Brighid blinked and shook those thoughts from her mind, trying not to let them bring her down. He doesn't even know that I like him... I can't say how he feels about me, she thought, trying to be optimistic. She lets out a loud sigh, lifting herself from the grass and trotting towards Darin. She plastered a smile on her beak - not all together forced, though - as she got closer, calling to him. "Hey there, Darin... Penny for your thoughts?" She wasn't sure what a penny was, but she'd heard Katie use it when asking someone what they were thinking about. Krissie "My thoughts find themselves too tossed about to be really be spoken about." Darin gave Brighid a half hearted grin. He had looked up from his patch of dirt, and watched Brighid approach. He hadn't know that she was watching him, but a little part of him was glad that she disturbed his brooding. He was thankful that she was one of the more cooperative girls in the whole lot. Vellir could only do so much and Brighid, he knew, did what she could to help here and there. "What brings you out here today?" He didn't move from his spot, and made the effort to gloss over the sullen look he had before her approach. He didn't want to worry Brighid with his concerns. Aradia You, she thought to herself, but aloud she said, "It's a lovely day out, and I thought I would get some fresh air... Besides, everyone else seems to be occupied. I haven't seen Barras since yesterday afternoon, and Kass is busy trying to break up some squabble between Alaric and one of the girls." Brighid rolled her eyes and grinned goofily at Darin. She didn't mention any of the girls because, in all honesty, she wasn't really close to any of them other than Vellir. She was a tomboy, and wanted to be wrestling with the guys rather than gossiping with the girls. Maybe that's why Darin doesn't like me... I'm not feminine enough, and I'm always covered in sand and dirt from rough housing... The thought came into her head unbidden, and she forced it down quickly, and settled down a few feet across from the purple and red male. "So, if I can't have your thoughts, why don't you tell me why you're out here? Enjoying the serenity of an area that isn't swarming with bickering girls?" She chuckled softly and canted her head to the side, waiting for an answer. Krissie "I guess you could say that." It was true really. Darin did need a little bit of time to himself. And he just sighed a little bit after he thought of it. Alaric was getting himself into trouble again. The boy was simply too frail in more ways than one. "I appreciate your company Brighid. Thank you for coming out." He surprised himself just a bit. He had never paid much mind to Brighid. She did prefer the company of the guys more so, but Darin himself had always been elsewhere anyway. Aradia Brighid felt a small jolt of delight when he thanked her for coming outside, though she hoped she didn't look too excited as she spoke again. "It was no problem... You just looked like you needed someone to be with you... I know how hard it's been for you, since... Well, since everything." She was going to say since Enivali left, but she didn't want to bring the other female up. He thought on her often enough, and for once Darin was noticing her, even if it was just because she'd started this. "It hasn't been easy in the past months."

"No, it hasn't." He finally looked at Brighid and gave her a half smile. "What brings you out here anyway? I would imagine my sullen and depressed stance would drive anyone away." He was just kidding, but most of the others hadn't even so much as looked at him today. Which in a way he was thankful for.

Brighid returned Darin's half-smile with a soft smile of her own that made her golden eyes light up, and she could feel her heart flutter up into her throat as those gorgeous emerald eyes looked at her. The dark feather-furred female couldn't speak for a few seconds, but her voice managed to escape her beak, sounding more shy, more nervous than she had intended, "Well... Like I said, it was a nice day... And I guess I was just lonely. I saw you, and I just thought that you looked lonely too..."
She kind of trailed off there, feeling more than a little stupid and embarrassed now. Why did I come out here again? I'm just going to make a fool out of myself... I should have just stayed inside and tried to help Kass play mediator... Or hid under the porch until it was time for bed.

Darin just chuckled softly and pretty much said nothing more. He didn't dismiss Brighid either. It was fairly obvious that he was simply appreciating the company however. He shifted about to get himself more comfortable and closed his eyes but kept his head up, still listening in the event that Brighid had more to talk about.

Brighid's claws dug lightly into the ground as Darin went silent, still oh so nervous and doing her best not to show it. The silence wasn't what one would call uncomfortable, but being alone with this particular male made always made her feel awkward. It was why she usually didn't approach unless he was in a group with the other males. I can speak to nearly any other male in our clan - hell, in the oasis - without a bit of discomfort, but Darin...
She lett out the smallest of sighs and makes herself smile, trying to recall something more comfortable. After a few moments, she chuckles softly and puts her head on her forelegs as she speaks in a jesting tone, "Man... These times make me miss when we were little Dusts. All we had to worry about when lunch was and what game we were going to play, and with who..."
Her smile widens even more after a second, reminiscing on those moments long in the past. "I remember how Barras and I would team up against you whenever we wrestled, because you were a few weeks younger than us. I forget how many times we pinned you down before you started getting bigger... How many times I knocked you in the mud by the lake and Vellir would scold me for getting you all dirty." She giggles mischievously, even as she realized how reminding him of pre-adolescent butt whoopings might not be the best things to discuss.

Darin looked at Brighid and just gave a half smile. Not the best moments from his point of view. Him and Barras always had a bit of a friendly strained relationship. Good friends, but there was always the underlying tension of competitiveness that was just natural for the males that stayed in the clan.
And it was even more strain as of late. He hadn't actually sat down and talked with Barras beyond a few curt sentences here an there lately. "Perhaps... Not quite my best moments really." His eyes were open again and he watched Brighid. "You seem uncomfortable. Am I bothering you?"

Brighid blinked and tensed for a second before shaking her head hard, inwardly panicking that he'd noticed and trying to come up with a decent explanation for her behavior - which she found was exceptionally difficult. "No, no! You aren't making me uncomfortable! I... I just..."
She stammered off after that last word, and the whole time she had spoken her voice had been high and more than a little agitated. Only the thickest of blockheads wouldn't be able to tell that she wasn't telling the truth. Subterfuge had never been Brighid's strong point; she was normally a very frank, straight forward Dustling with anyone she met - even other females, though she rarely had a lot of common ground between them aside from her gender - and very easy to read.
The dark feather-furred female glanced between Darin and the paws, then back to Darin as she spoke again, her voice a little quieter now. "It's not you, Darin," she said, while her mind bitterly interjected, Yeah, right, "It's me... I... I just... I should just go now." And almost as soon as the words slipped past her beak she rose up and turned her back on him, making an effort to walk calmly instead of running away with her tail between her legs.

[OOC Remix: Finish this up for awesome babbies.]
Darin wasn't blind enough to ignore Brighid's distress and got up to trail after her. Darin was not as physically impressive as his father, but he most resembled him when he actually moved. He moved quickly to cut Brighid off and sat down directly in front of her, to block he immediate path, "This isn't like you Brighid, what is it that you're not telling me?"
He knew from experience that one could usually get Brighid to share her thoughts if pressed upon. You didn't really have to try too hard. But this wasn't just Brighid being coy again, she was withholding something that was causing her distress and it showed.
His imagination got the better of him and he could start to feel anger welling up in him, "Did some one hurt you? I swear if that b*****d Laurent has so much as even looked at you wrong I'll.. I'll..." Darin nearly spit and he appeared tense now and angry and stared hard at Brighid, "What's going on Brighid?!" It was difficult to tell if this sudden mood swing as fueled by his care for Brighid or his hatred for Laurent.

Brighid jerked to a halt when Darin cut her off, eyes widening as her thoughts went through her head like lightning bolts. How could she tell him what was bothering her? She'd been holding it in for ages, first because she thought she had time to let him know, or he might notice her for himself. Then she kept her silence he had found Enivali and had his first brood with her, and she knew he couldn't be hers. Not even after the stunning female went away. What could she possibly say to him?
Her head bowed at his first question, beak clenched shut for her loss of words. But at his sudden outburst she lifted her head again, golden eyes widening. She didn't know whether to be glad at his concern for her, or exasperated that he was jumping at the chance to put a crime at Laurent's paws. She shook her head, sending her eyes downward as her talons dug into the dirt beneath them. "No," she muttered. "No one has harmed me. Laurent hasn't done a thing to me, unless you consider compliments a vicious assault."
A quiver ran down Brighid's spine, surprised at how bitter her words sounded. She didn't want to speak to him like that. She didn't want to speak to him at all of what bothered her, but... But he would hound her until he finally got her to speak her mind. She didn't know how to make herself say the words. She draws in a soft breath and turns her back upon him again, not moving beyond that, hoping it will be easier if she wasn't looking at him. Her voice was a strained hush when she finally answered.
"I'm not telling you the same thing I've never told you... What I haven't told you for as long as I've known you. I..." She shudders again, squeezing her eyes shut as she manages a few more words. "I've never known how to say it. I still don't..."

[OOC: Gonna wrap this up with a brief recollection of events. Darin and Brighid are on good terms, but Darin was entirely dedicated to Enivali. So when Brighid finally fesses up that she's in love with Darin, he decides to honest and straightforward and tell her that he does not cannot love her back. This just crushes Brighid, who would run off in tears and leave Darin to wonder if he made a mistake. He's still in love with Enivali, but he's left now to entertain the thought of perhaps loving some one new after all this time. In the mean time, Brighid isn't gonna get over this rejection so easily...
And with that, thread closed, tiem to move on to more dramas. biggrin ]
