Lilavati had grown up like a weed, and finally she had reached adulthood..or at least that's what Amani told her. She didn't feel any differently now than she did when she was younger. Sure, she was bigger..and maybe she had filled out a little bit, but still! What was so special about being an "adult" anyway?
She pondered all this while laying in the grass at the lake's edge outside of her mother's home. Amani had said that she had met her mate at the edge of this very lake, and that had made it special for her. Lila couldn't help but let out a sigh and wonder what it was all like..she still felt so much like a child.

The day was nearly gone, and Kass was worn out from having to break up not one or two, but three squabbles amongst some of the clan members. Two of them started by the grandson of the missing clan leader, Alaric, of all Dustlings! Neither Barras nor Darin had been around - as Caiden's true sons, it was their job to police his clan - so it had fallen upon Kass, as one of the more mature, even tempered males in the household to smooth things out. The day had seemed so quiet at the start, too, and Kass thought he would finally relax... But now the sun was setting, and it found Kass flying over the lake, trying to clear his frazzled brain of all the day's happenings. If I had wanted to deal with the problems of a clan, I would have struck out long ago and found females to follow me, the blackish-gray and white male thought sullenly. But he had never wanted to lead a clan at all; he'd been happy with the quiet life under Caiden's reign, and wasn't at all interested in the affections of dozens of females. He'd rather have just one girl, if he were ever to have any. Dozens of mates and followers led to nothing but stress and trouble, if what he'd seen in the past months were any evidence. Try not to think about it, he told himself, closing his eyes for a moment and diving down several yards through the air, letting the wind flowing through his feathers and wings take his problems with it. He leveled off after a few moments, opening his eyes to see that he had flown almost clear across the lake, out of clan territory. And yet, he thought he saw something colorful that he thought to be a Dustling near the shore, but couldn't quite tell from this high up. Hrmm... Could be one of ours, though at that distance away from Caiden's territory, it probably isn't... I should check and make sure. The sun will be setting in another hour or so, and Katie and Krissie will do their head count not long after...Decision made, Kass started his descent towards the Dustling, downy wings spread out to keep his fall slow. He wouldn't want to startle the poor thing with a sudden landing.

Lilavati led a very carefree life, living with her adoptive mother and father in their lakeside den. She rarely ever ventured into town, except when her mother would visit her human and the other odd dusts that lived there. Sometimes the thought of city life fascinated her, and she wondered what it would be like to live there and meet others. For now, she was content where she was..it was safe, after all. Amani had warned her that some less desirable creatures lived in the city..
A shadow passed overhead, and Lila stirred from her thoughts to look curiously up to the sky. "What is that...a bird?" she thought aloud, but as the grey shape drew closer into focus, she realized that it wasn't a bird at all, but a winged dustling. Immediately she leapt to her feet, awaiting the landing of the mysterious dust excitedly. She had heard that they existed, but of course, she had never come into contact with one before.
Leaning back onto her hind legs a bit, she sniffed at the air, breathing in deeply. The dust had a more masculine scent..more like her father..and she was instantly put at ease..yet her curiosity was not.
"Hi there!" she said cheerfully, a smile already in her eyes as the dustling landed, "I've never seen anyone like you before..What's your name?" Her tail swayed a little bit behind her, nervously, but her bubbly energy and excitement was enough to make up for that.

As Kass came closer to the ground, he got confirmation that the creature he'd spotted was a Dustling, a lovely pink female, but not one of his fellow clan members. In fact, he didn't think that he had ever met her before, though that didn't phase him greatly. He was always seeing new faces in the clan, and he often ventured into the town with his human or some of the females as an escort. He never considered turning away once he'd had these things confirmed. First, she had looked up and noticed him, and turning away then would have been rude. Secondly, he desperately needed a break from those he considered his "family."
He landed just a few feet away from the female, tucking his wings against his sides. He smiled as she greeted him, the expression weary but genuine, and almost instantly sensed from her bright voice and the exuberant air about her that she was young, probably just reaching adulthood. He bows his head to her slightly, and in a polite, friendly voice, he says, "Hello, miss. I'm Kass, and I'm sorry if I disturbed you," he raises his head to grin at her a little more broadly, "Though, not all that sorry to be meeting someone new. Now, who do I have the pleasure of making acquaintances with, if it is alright to ask?"

Put at ease by his friendly greeting, Lila followed his example and nodded her head in greeting. "My name is Lilavati..but usually I'm called Lila for short" she said, sitting back onto her hind legs. Her tail curled about her hips shyly as she looked up at him. "You haven't bothered me at all..It's nice to meet someone new. I don't get many visitors out here..." She turned to look out at the rippling surface of the lake, almost entranced by it as she had been before he arrived. "Most of the time it's just me..and mother..."
It was then when she realized how much she wished she had been able to go out and make more friends when she was younger..she felt like a hermit then, just now crawling out of the woods and socializing. She was embarrassed now, and a darker pink blush crept about under her featherfur. She must look so akward, already having admitted being kept in the dark and on the fringe of society for most of her life.
Just try not to think of it..you have a little company now, right? You don't want to scare him off and convince him you're a loser already, do you?

Kass looked at her curiously, wondering how she might not have gotten any of his fellow clan members straying near her home, but it wasn't that peculiar. The Dustlings of the clan tended not to roam too far out of their territory - the house of their humans', the great field and their side of the lake, and some of the forest to the north. Even now, with so much discourse and confusion in their group, most stayed close to home. Besides, some new mother Dustlings seemed to like keeping their young to themselves until they grew up.
Kass nodded slightly to her, still smiling at her as he speaks again, "Well, I'm glad to hear that I'm not bothering you. I come from the clan on the other side of the lake, and some of the females grow quite irate when you bother them while they're relaxing." He chuckles softly and offers a slight shrug. "You seem nice though, and fairly social for one who doesn't receive much company."

Lila couldn't resist the urge, and smiled at him warmly, but she contained herself rather well..and she was proud of herself for that. Deep down she was just starved for attention. Her mother and her mate had gone off somewhere, looking for sand or something or another. Little Lila hardly paid any attention to what they were going on about and had no idea what on earth they'd want sand for. All she understood was that she was going to be alone for a little while.
Clan..? She tilted her head at him in curiosity, "I've never heard anything about a clan.." she lowered her head slightly, blushing in embarassment, "..What's that..? Is that your family?" She looked behind her to the entrance of her own den, dark and rather forbidding looking in the twilight.
"My family is gone for a while..My mother is out searching for sand..or..something like that." she said dismissively, her shoulders shrugged and her gaze turned back to him," I'm just holding the fort here for now, so to speak."

Kass remained quiet as Lilavati spoke, interested in learning more of the new Dustling. He arched an eyebrow in curiosity when she brought up her mother's search for sand, wondering how Lila didn't know about how Dustlings reproduced. I suppose her mother hasn't discussed such things with her... I'll leave that to her, unless Lila asks.
Instead, he nods slightly, before he answered her first question. "In a way, they are my family... A clan is normally a large, close group of Dustlings, usually led by an elder, influential male... Sometimes there are female leaders, but ours' is... Was... led by a male named Caiden, and we are quite a large band, so the eldest of our females, Vellir, and Caiden's children helped him rule... I have been amongst the clan since I was dustpile, and Vellir raised me with her own young."
He smiles softly at the thought of his own adopted mother. It saddened him, to see her so lost and alone without her beloved Caiden, and he felt that that upstart Laurent was taking advantage of her loneliness. Sighing, he spoke again in a quiet, less cheerful tone, "I know about having to hold down the fort, though. Our leader has been absent for some time, and things are... Strained... Without him. Vellir and Caiden's children need all the help that they can get in keeping things together, and I try my best to help."
No need to depress the girl or bore her with your problems, man... She's never even met you before, and you've nearly told her your life story. Be more upbeat! he thought to himself as he flashed Lila a smile again, tilting his head to the side. "But that is not a problem of your's, Miss Lila, and I should not have put my troubles at your paws. Tell me, what do you like to occupy your hours with? The quiet of this place must drive you towards some activity to entertain yourself with."

Lila couldn't help but feel sorry for poor Kass as soon as she saw the sorrow in his eyes. His family sounded like a real mess to deal with on it's own, without the head of the family, she imagined it must be almost chaotic. She nodded her head sympathetically as he spoke, feeling strangely complimented that he chose to tell her so much about himself.
Immediately he saw his wish to change the subject, and she obliged, giving him a sweet smile as he made an effort to cheer up. I won't bother him with questions, she thought, poor guy looks like he has enough on his mind as it is. For now, she avoided commenting on it, and skipped to a more cheerful note with him.
"Oh yes..usually I like to go fishing or visit the fox fields sometimes..but what I -really- like is to take a trip to town.. I don't have a clan like you do, but my mother's human has a house there and a few other dusts live with her. The one she calls Senka is..well..entertaining.." she said as she pictured Senka, featherfur charged with static electricity, zipping around Dana's apartment and skidding all over the linoleum because "something in the laundry room tried to eat her". Lila couldn't hold back a laugh, and she shook her head as she looked back to Kass. "Let's just say that she makes me feel very wise for my age...poor thing."
She stretched out her limbs a bit and relaxed into the grass before him, just watching him with curious interest. For her first time really meeting a stranger..this wasn't all that bad. It was actually pretty nice...I wonder what the rest of his family is like..if they're like him too..

Kass felt himself relax as they went onto the different subject, and nodded slightly to some of the things she said. He smiled at the mention of one of her human's other other Dustlings, assuming from the words she used and her tone of voice, that this Senka was fairly eccentric. Eccentric Dusts... Now there's something I'm familiar with, he thought with a silent chuckle.
"Mmm... I go into the town sometimes, with the humans who live in our house or some of the girls in our clan to keep them company... It's certainly always interesting. Though, I wouldn't say things were that dull at home, either." He laughs aloud this time, a deep, warm chuckle as he shifts himself some to become more comfortable. "There is some excellent fishing in the lake from what I hear, though I don't do much of it myself. I like to swim, though, and flying is the most exhilarating experience.
"Though..." He continued, a playful tone entering his voice, "For one with wings, I have the worst sense of direction in the air. I got lost in the desert for a few hours on my first flight." The winged Dustling smirks slightly at the memory. I'm not as bad as then, buuuut... I could definitely be better.

Lila's eyes went bright with interest once he brought up his flying experiences. To be able to fly..oh that must be fun! she thought, her tail wagging about happily, I wonder what it's like..
She shook her head a little and cleared her head of the thought. No use getting too attached to that thought..I couldn't sprout wings even if I tried... She tried hard not to be a little bit jealous..maybe it showed..but she hoped it didn't.
" I bet flying can be fun huh? Useful too, if you get into trouble..well worth getting lost." She nodded, chuckling a bit when he brought up his sense of direction. " Is that how you ended up aaall the way out here..?" she said teasingly, her voice becoming warmer and more playful.

Kass chuckled softly and nodded to her first statements, and felt a slight flush beneath his dark feather-fur at her question. He ruffled his wings thoughtfully before he answered her, "I certainly wouldn't trade my wings for a better sense of direction. I've always enjoyed flying... And, ah, no, that isn't how I ended up here."
The winged Dustling tilted his head to the side, letting out a small sigh before continuing, "Today has been a very long day, and I flying helps me clear my head..." He flashes her a small grin and shrugs, his dark eyes full of mirth. "I needed a break. It was just happy circumstance that I spotted you."

(( Fiiiinally got my muse back ))
" Well..I'm glad you did.." She said, stretching out and settling herself into a more comfortable position, her tail swishing about with her youthful energy. "It gets kind of boring being all the way out here alone. The sun rises and sets and everything in between seems aaaall the same." She sighed softly and looked off towards the fields and forests off in the distance, hemmed in neatly by the mountains that fenced in the little oasis. It was the landscape she saw every day..one that never seemed to change. She was a far cry away from the bustle of the streets surrounding the facility.
Her focus slowly drifted back to Kass, and she shook her head to clear her mind. " I guess we're in opposite places, you and I...but we're still kind of in the same place..eh.." she screwed up her face in thought, blushing and giggling at the same time. " That didn't sound right.."
" We're in totally different situations..but we feel the same about where we are..." Ah..yep...that sounded better..nice one Lila.

((At long last, I FINALLY POST!))
"I think I understand," the black and white Dustling says, a soft smile on his beak. "Wanting to get away from where we are, if only for a little while. You to get some more excitement, and I... Well, I could do with a little more peace."
He chuckles softly, shaking his head as he slowly settles down, resting his head on his forepaws, wings shifting as they nestle in against his body. He peers to Lilavati, his head tilting slightly to the side. "If you ever have another case of the doldrums, feel free to come around to our side of the lake. A few hours amongst my household, and you won't have a problem finding drama or entertainment."

Relief washed over her when she spotted the understanding in Kass's eyes, relieved that she hadn't just made a total fool of herself. She listened to his invitation and smiled a little to herself, trying hard to keep her tail from excitedly swishing all over the place. It was all she could do to keep her tail mostly still, the tip of it still curling this way and that as she fidgeted. He invited her over! Finally she could go out there and meet other dusts her age perhaps...seeing other dustlings period was enough in itself!
Smiling widely, she nodded back to him, her fur blushed from her bashfulness. "I may just take you up on that.." she said demurely, her voice slightly lower than its usual sprightly pitch, "And of course..If you wanted to get away from it all for a while..I don't see anything wrong with you coming out here for a while. I certainly wouldn't mind the company, seeing as the den is empty anyhow.." There was a hint of girlish suggestion there, but she hadn't consciously put it there. After she realized the tone she had created, her blush only deepened, and she averted her eyes. "I mean, you wouldn't have to stay over or anything, unless you wanted to.."
Oh she was just digging herself deeper now...crap!
