The Anti-Hack/Scam

Guide

Welcome to the Anti-Hack/Scam guide. This guide is here for the purpose of keeping you and your account safe from people who want to take advantage of you. Not all people on Gaia are out there to get you, so you don't need to be completely paranoid everywhere you go. Just use your smarts, and read through this guide, and you'll be able to make friends and socialize without the fear of losing all you've worked hard to get.

This guide is broken down into two section: An Anti-Hack section and a Anti-Scam section. Take your time and familiarize yourself with each of these sections. This is for your well-being and safety. By not reading this you could, unbeknownst to you, be scammed and/or hacked. People these days are getting creative and are even copying Gaias exact layout. So please, by all means, read the entire thread.

The Anti-Hack/Scam

Guide

Anti-Hacking.

To understand how to stop hacking, you must first learn what being hacked and hacking is. Hacking is when someone acquires your password and logs onto your account. The hacker then takes all of your items and trades them to his real account. Afterwards, if the hacker knows what he is doing, your e-mail and your password will both be changed. If you are hacked, chances are you will not get your things back.

This is why it is very important that you do not give out your password to anyone. No one the GaiaOnline staff needs your password. They do not need your password to make you a moderator, and they do not need your password for the battle system. They don't need your Password AT ALL. Your password is for you to know, and you only. Follow the steps below to ensure that your password is safe and that your account is as well.

[1.] Make your password a combination of letters, words and numbers. It is a lot harder to guess irbepro83703 than it is to guess puppy. Your password should be complex and something that only you should know. Creating your password is one of the few places l337 speak would be acceptable. In fact, its highly recommended that if you want to make a one word password, type it in l337speak, it makes it a LOT harder to guess.

[2.] Do not share your password with anyone. Do not tell your family, friends or even your girlfriend/boyfriend. If they want a Gaia account, they can make their own. While you may trust them, it is better to just play the safe side. People can do wacky things when they're mad at you or want revenge. Again I'll state that the Gaia Staff and the NAA Staff DO NOT NEED YOUR PASSWORD.

[3.] Beware Gaia Staff impersonators. If their name is not in Orange, Green or Purple, then they aren't on the Gaia staff. It's really as simple as that. Generally people who impersonate Gaia staff would like for you to test their battle system or would like your password for something. Again, THEY DON'T NEED YOUR PASSWORD. If a person who is impersonating the Gaia or NAA staff PMs you, PM a Gaia Moderator immediately. We have no Gaia moderators working for us, so if an NAA Moderator ever PMs you saying they're Gaia staff, PM a GAIA MODERATOR immediately, and notify us immediately so we can take action. Most impersonators leave posts like this:

silly scammer
You have been chosen to beta test our new battle system! All we need is your username, and password to accept. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Gaia Online Staff

[4.] Beware false links. Occasionally someone will be tricky and send you a link that could be valid, such as to vote for them in the Avatar Arena, or to see their thread. Before clicking the link, hover your mouse over the link and then glance to the bottom of your browser where the link is displayed. Check the link and verify that is a legit GaiaOnline link. People get creative and change the "i" to an "l" or something of that sort. If you do click it, and you mysteriously find yourself logged out, the chances are high that it's a key logger site and is an attempt to get you to forfeit up your password and username. DO NOT DO SO. Instead, click out of the link and refresh the page that you received the PM from. If you are still logged in on that page, then report the PM as it is indeed a hacking attempt. The attempts are becoming more and more crafty, and will sometimes hide the link as even a person asking for you to vote for them in the avatar arena. People are continually thinking of new ways to screw Gaia users, and can get very convincing:

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ADDRESS BAR. If you're logged out, it should ALWAYS say www.gaiaonline.com. Not www.mygaia.com or www.gogaia.com, or anything else. EVER.

The Anti-Hack/Scam

Guide

Anti-Scamming.

Again, we'll start off with a brief exclamation of what scamming is. Scamming is when someone attempts to underpay you by a large amount for something you are selling. Scamming is an easy thing to prevent: All you need to do is hit up TekTek. Then head over to the Gaia Items part and click that section. Then glance to the top right corner of your page and type in the value of your item and check it to compare what they are offering you.

Sometimes, the person will offer items, and total those up for you. It is best to check to be safe. Not because the person is trying to scam you, but because sometimes they make a mistake and are off by a few. They might also try to drop you down in price; this is called haggling and it is for when the person wants to pay less. This is not scamming, and you are free to just say no to them.

To put it simply always check the value of the item you are selling before you sell it. Check the items that the person is offering and total it yourself. When receiving the trade, double check and triple check everything, especially when dealing with Monthly Collectible letters, as these can sometimes look the same. To check the letters, hover your mouse over the item in question and a little box will tell you what the letter is. When checking gold, verify that they have correctly inputed the right number of zeros. There is a giant difference between 3 zeros, and 4 zeros.

Always remember, you are the most powerful tool in stopping hackers and scammers.
