Class Description A required class for all first-year science and tech majors. Teaches the basics of lab safety and preparation, cleanup, and emergency handling. Any course that was required was among the first things he got done. Despite the fact that he could possibly do something he considered 'fun' there just was no time for that. The male was eager to get started on his life path.
The classroom was very lab like which comforted him greatly. He truly felt like his father's son now. He would be working in an area similar to his father's. This feeling of fulfilling his father's legacy was so worth it all.
Weiyuan sat in one of the chairs, carefully rearranging his new uniform so that there wouldn't be any wrinkles and set his supplies in front of him before looking at the professor. He couldn't wait.

"Weiyuan," Professor Veilwood said as he turned around from arranging things on the desks around him. Naturally he had a pile of folders, all neatly labeled and organized to perfection. Not to mention various other things that contributed to his position and topic of expertise. There was a gentle smile on his features, one that he often gave to all his students. However, it did not diminish the look in his eyes as he was preparing for the lesson. He had all sorts of things at his disposal to give to the other, and he would do so pleasantly, strictly, but with encouragement.
That was how it was done.
So he moved himself to stand in front of where the other was sitting and handed him a two sheets of paper and one eight-sided die. One was blank lined paper and the other was a worksheet that read:
Please roll the dice provided, and depending on the number you receive, write a reaction that corresponds with the situation. (Also remember that this is a Lab Safety class.)
1 - Classroom explodes. 2 - Volatile chemicals get mixed. 3 - Various dangerous machinery has been left on. 4 - How do you handle dry ice? 5 - How do you clean an infected wound? 6 - You scrape your hand on one of the Tech objects. 7 - How do you work with toxic chemicals/raw materials? 8 - You get a hazardous chemical in your eye.
"Take a few minutes and complete the assignment," smiled the Professor. "Just speak up when you're finished."

Weiyuan rolled the dice, keeping silent in response to the professor. Seven. How do you work with toxic chemicals/raw materials?
He pulled out one of his mechanical pencils before beginning to write. It took two strokes before he realized that he was beginning to write this in his native language, he erased it quickly before resuming his thoughts in English.
Leung, Weiyuan Lab Safety Prof. Veilwood
First, when entering any scientific laboratory it is best for one to was their hands and make sure to roll up any loose ends on clothes and tie one's hair up should the person have long hair. Safety goggles should be worn in the lab room at all times.
Never taste or touch the laboratory chemicals with your bare hands, some chemicals may cause irritation in the skin and if not properly taken care of may lead to worse situations. In this case rubber gloves should be used since cloth gloves may absorb the chemical.
Use the exact amount of the chemical given by the instructions, unless given permission to use more or less by the instructor and make note of this change. In the case that there unused chemicals in an experiment, never return unused chemicals to their original containers. This prevents contamination.
Always use a fume hood when working with toxic substances. Never inhale fumes directly. Fumes may irritate the lungs and may cause a slight difficulty with breathing.
When the experiment is completed, dispose of chemicals in the designated disposal siteānot in the sink or trash can. Any mixture of chemicals in the trashcan or sewage line may cause a volatile reaction.
He looked over his work, wondering if maybe he had put too much. But he supposed too much was always better than not enough. He looked up muttering a notification to the professor.

Professor Veilwood rose from his seat, where he seemed to be shuffling papers with quite the serious authoritative expression, and came over to take the paper from Weiyuan. His murky eyes scanned it for a moment, reading it and digesting it and he nodded a little, giving the other a smile. Easily, he went and put the paper back on the desk he was working at; he'd be filing it away at a later point.
Then he turned back to Weiyuan and nodded approvingly, "Well written and covering all the bases. Now, are chemicals the sort of thing you intend you work with? Or do you have another type of career in mind?" His voice was gentle, no need to be stern quite yet. He was teaching. This was a one-on-one class. Formalities only relied on the material being taught. That was all.

He could feel his nerves, not used to working one-on-one with a authoritative figure at all. He attempted to relax, he wouldn't want to give Professor Veilwood the wrong impression of him, despite the brief meeting at the fires. "No, not chemicals. I intend on working in the medical field."

"Ah. Like Mr. Tai?" Ardanay said with a small laugh as he turned back around and retrieved three papers on his desk. "Since you say no chemicals, I will assume you do not intend to have anything to do with pharmacists. Instead, these are sheets concerning various doctorate medical jobs as well as precautions to be taken. Look them over for a moment and then I'd like to ask you another question."
The sheets were detailed in certain areas, and mostly they contained a lot of information about the field in general. It listed three or four jobs in said medical field as well as the materials those jobs usually had on hand. Depending on which one, the Professor figured he'd have to give a little lesson about handling one's self. An overall view as well as an indication of safety in the fields. Not everyone could have it easy with just clean materials and workplace. There was so much more to it than most might see, and it was Ardanay's job to make sure this got taught.

The brunette nodded, silently watching the professor. Then he glanced through all the professions. Immediately he looked for the job that sounded most like his father's. Finding it, he barely glanced through the description, he knew well enough what the job entailed. It was ironic though, his father took a job meant to save lives but in the end it killed him. To say he was bitter about it would be correct.
Weiyuan read all the other ones carefully. He thought he was sure of what path he was going to take but he was starting to wonder. Did he really want to be exactly like his father? Or did he have his own path set out for him? He stopped thinking about it for awhile. His destiny would reveal itself, no need to rush. He glanced back up at Professor Veilwood.

As the other glanced up, Ardanay Veilwood continued with his words from prior. He'd had a question and he would ask it. He was gentle though, the other didn't really talk much and he wasn't going to force it out of him at all. Some students were simply like that. He pushed some forest green hair out of his eyes and then spoke simply, "What is the most important thing to remember before doing anything with a patient in the medical field, do you know?"
He seemed to be trying to analyze the Chinese boy. What was going on in his mind? Was he usually this silent? He'd certainly seemed so, just a short time ago. Luckily this classroom hadn't been badly destroyed, so he'd gotten back in. This was good, but he really wasn't learning anything new about his students. And he did so enjoy teaching them.

Weiyuan blinked, thinking it over for a bit. But he felt somewhat distracted, as if Professor Veilwood was trying to dissect his thought process right there. He was used to students trying to understand him but his relationships with his teachers had a clear wide line. He cleared his head, he wasn't at his old school though, of course things would be different.
The most important thing? There were two sides two this. People were complicated things, you had to make sure that you pleased both their logical and emotional sides. "When you approach a patient you have to look professional, but not cold. You have be sympathetic to their feelings while still keeping a doctor-patient relationship. You must also understand their medical backgrounds before giving a diagnosis that involves drugs."

Professor Veilwood thought for a moment upon the other's answer. Not the one he'd been looking for, but correct for the question he'd asked. Nodding with a smile of approval and a flicker in his storm green-gray eyes he folded his hands behind his back a little and looked at the other, "Quite right. And to look professional one must be aware of the dangers and the precautions they need to take, as well as of the hygiene issue."
At this, he began to pace very slightly and then stopped and looked at Weiyuan, "About how many times a day do you think doctors wash their hands, Weiyuan?" There was a smile to his voice, but it was a serious question. The safety of the doctor and patient could be jeopardized if measures weren't taken. "The answer is quite a lot. In a doctor's 'lab', hygiene is first. It is part of the safety process. And with very nearly all the instruments, doctors use gloves. This is to protect themselves and their patients. Perhaps you'd like to begin taking notes on this?" He finished in a kind voice, waiting to give the other a chance to begin.

He sighed, glad to hear a lecture. He could do much better in those situations. He opened his notebook, taking a moment to decide which language to write in. On a whim he decided English. Weiyuan never liked having to cover basics, he enjoyed getting to the more challenging things in life but he couldn't just slack off. He remembered how often his father used to wash his hands. His mother said that it was just a habit and when he was younger he didn't understand. He could now.

"Also, along with hygiene most doctors have other safety standards. For example, the proper way to dispose of toxic wastes. The best way to examine a sick patient. And what to do in case of emergencies. Can you think of anything that might be constituted as a safety emergency in the medical field, Weiyuan?"
Ardanay was trying hard to make the lesson interesting, informational, and useful. As well as slightly interactive so that the student would pay more attention. There was only so much he could do and say though. Most things were obvious and he'd give the other a chance to look over all the information in the end and then ask any questions he might not understand.

A safety emergency? "You mean like quarantine? For when a patient is contagious." Or the element is already in the air of a room. Yes, he remembered that. They had quarantined the laboratory in both of the China incidents hadn't they? He didn't know of any other examples of medical quarantine beyond that. His father was rarely working the floor at hospitals, so all this information came from television or his father's medical magazines. He should've read those more.

"Quarantine is most certainly a medical emergency requiring a lot of safety procedures," Ardanay replied kindly. He pushed back some of the stray strands of green hair from his eyes as he looked around the classroom they were in. It was moderately boring, modern, and properly equipped for teaching just this kind of lesson. All the possible things that could go wrong in here, would. It was simple as that.
"Do you know the procedures taken for quarantine patients? Admitting them, administering treatment, as well as personal hygiene procedures?"

The brunette brushed back some of his own hair. "Not really Professor, all I know is that the person or persons is isolated and only those with specific permission are allowed in the room with the patient." At least that was as far as he could grasp based on the few media sources he had seen and the experience in China. But that was exactly why he was here learning about it. He would assume much and he preferred to have proper notes on these sorts of things.
