Mimea missed her home. Every day that passed made the longing in her heart stronger. The roguelands were not bad, not really, but they could never compare to the swamp. The lioness had always acted haughty, as though she was somehow above the pride, above their culture and way of life, but this seperation made her realize how much a part of her the Jini-msemi truly was.

There.

The wild dog lowered her head, eyes narrowed. She could smell the scent of fresh kill on the distracted lioness. Ren was hungry, and Crevan was, too.

Crevan. Ren was captivated by the dog. His beliefs, his convictions, mirrored Ren's in a way that no one else's did. She was drawn to him, and, she believed, he was drawn to her.

It was dinnertime. Ren crept after Mimea, perfectly silent.

Mimea was lost in her thoughts as she idly licked her paws clean. Mother, her siblings, her friends... did they miss her? Had anyone already completed their quest? What if she was the last one to find her name? Worse yet, what if she never found her name?

She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she did not notice the wild dog stalking her.

Stupid lioness, Ren thought to herself. Too busy daydreaming to guard the kill that laid nearby!

The red dog inched closer, fangs bared. She could practically taste the blood, the meat. It would be hers, and Crevan would be so pleased. Ren raised her tail at the thought.

Without any warning, she sprung forward, snarling. She was smaller than the lioness, but she had the advantage of surprise on her side.

Mimea let out a squeal as she rolled away, startled half to death by the red creature. Her hackles raised but she did not know what to do. She had never had to defend herself before, nor had she had to fight, and so the lioness was at a loss. She bared her fangs in what she hoped was a threatening snarl, but it came out sounding like a weak cough.

Ren snorted with laughter at the lioness. What a fool! It would take a lot more than some half-assed attempt at defense to drive her off. The dog trotted towards the carcass with cockiness in her step. What had been a simple plan to steal food had turned into a game.

"Huh, I thought lions were supposed to be the rulers of the savanna," she quipped, eyeing Mimea. She could practically taste the meat.

She had never met a wild dog before, and her current impression of the species certainly wasn't very high.

Mimea tried to come up with a witty retort, but nothing came to her. She was bubbling with anger at the unfairness of the situation.

Ren took advantage of this, and goaded the lioness' frustration.

"Scared?" she taunted, lightly stepping over the meat so that she stood over it, staking her claim. "How unfortunate. You have the strength to make your kill, but not the guts to defend it? I would kill anyone that shamed my species that way."

Her tail was slightly curled over her back, unafraid.

"I'm not a killer," she said coolly. The idea of killing a lion sickened her. She could always find more food, but could never take the life of one of her own. She couldn't take the life of any other big cat, when she thought about it. Killing this wild dog was tempting, but again, she could never bring herself to murder.

In a split second decision she burst forward, fangs bared as she tried to reclaim her kill. Mimea barrelled towards the dog, claws unsheathed.

"Too bad for you," Ren retorted.

While the young lioness was fast, Ren was faster, and in one smooth movement she bent over, snapped the remaining carcass into her mouth, and tore away. Crevan would be pleased.
