Yeah . . . I love band, like, a lot. It's so much fun! But I haven't been in band since middle school, and now I'm joining and making a switch from French horn to trumpet. Crazy stuff! Plus, I might be joining marching band. This fact is not only making me terribly excited, but also completely filling me with a sense of dread . . . Marching band. I'm so nervous! Any tips for a junior newbie?

In your case...I'd say to practice a lot before you get out on the field, since you haven't played in a while. (At least you're better than my dad...he hasn't played trumpet in over 10 years and now he picks his piccolo trumpet up and wonders why he can't hit all the high notes he used to... stare )
Other than that...Don't Panic! Everyone should be willing to help you get back on your feet. Just pay attention, work hard, drink lotsa water, and do your best in everything. Pretty soon it'll be like you never left band in the first place. 3nodding

Pick up your instrument and play occasionally over the summer. Once you start doing marching band, as long as you're making a genuine effort, people will be more than willing to help you.

Hahahaha, occasionally is something to say. I've been pretty obsessive; I love it. I've played an average of three to four hours every day unless my parents are home all day.

Practice Practice Practice.
Make sure you know all the fingerings and stuff and gradually over the summer you should work on memorizing the music then when it gets closer to marching season ask someone from band (prolly a friend who's been in it for at least a year) to help you with the basics of marching. There should be someone willing to help you there. so by the time school or band camp starts you'll be somewhat prepared. There is always gonna be stuff to learn trust me (I'm also going to be a junior but I play clarinet) I still don't know everything about marching band and I've been in it for 2 years.
Make sure when you go to band camp to have lot's of water. Like me for band cam I take a jug that holds 1/2 a gallon of water and we only march outside for 3 and 1/2 hours and I still almost run out so have plenty of water.
Good luck ^.^

French horn to trumpet is an easy switch once you get used to the key change and fingerings hitting higher notes as a breeze because the horn mouthpieces are soo teeny tiny

Just take the time over summer to learn the instrument and you should be fine. Don't freak, it's no worry as long as you do that.

lol, my freshman year I switched from trumpet to horn, so I just went the opposite way. (though I did have mello in between)
Just work on the few fingerings that are different between the two (unless you play double horn... Then there's mostly different fingerings) Memorizing them is the most essential.
Don't be too worried, just don't act like you are a better player than everyone else. That will just piss people off. I know a girl who had just started playing clarinet but acted like she deserved first part every time, and all it did was get the other clarinets who'd been playing four to eight years very angry at her. (unless you really are better. In that case, prove it don't say it)
Yeah... The marching's easy, it's just the switching that'd be a problem, and between those two brass instruments should not be too much of a problem.
