The Chapter System
I've noticed that in most RPGs with multiple people, such ones in forums where players come and go. Life is unpredictable, so to deal with players going inactive and active at various points of the story, this chapter system will allow the story to continue on without much distraction. This system is also to be used to advance the story, much like the chapters in a book.
For a chapter to end... - A lot of players (5 or more / 50% of the total people signed up), significant to the storyline or otherwise, have gone inactive. - The storyline have gone astray or stale. In a scene or event that has gone too long, sometimes it is wise to quickly end it or perhaps atleast change the scene or atmosphere to keep the story lively. - A very significant event has occured that deserves a change.
What the chapter system is to be used... - To advance the storyline. - To place more focus on the current active players, and let the inactive ones fade into the background. - To organize significant events.
Somewhere in the RP, perhaps the first post in the RPG's thread, there could be a list of chapters with each one a summary of the most important occurances that should be noted. It'll help people that go inactive and come back, and will help new players to see what has occured.
Chapters can also direct the RPs to a certain direction by setting up the theme for the new chapter.
It's not an original idea, but its a system I was thinking of that can be applied to RPGs.
Please comment, give some more ideas and such. smile

The Chapter system as I know it is also best employed in an RP with more players than can comfortably fit in one thread. By breaking a story down into chapters and assigning or offering th chapters to a limited number of people, you can entertain two plots at the same time and more effectively offer a simple role-playing environment that entertains your players. Just like a book, each chapter follows its own important event and once that is done, you can close the chapter and open a new one.

Wow, I have never heard the name for this. Thank you very much for posting! Do you think it should go in the RP guide in Barton OOC?

Penden Wow, I have never heard the name for this. Thank you very much for posting! Do you think it should go in the RP guide in Barton OOC? I don't think anyone really talked about it. Most just used chapters like how authors used them in their books, for plot advancement. I'm thinking of using and tweaking it for RPGs. -nodsagely-. I specifically wrote this for players going inactive and active, 'cause I've seen a couple of good ones just stop and never continue. It sucked. lol. So yeah. I was going to post it in our guide here, but posted here first to tweak it and see what people think about it. smile Oh and I've implemented this in the revival of Halycon's Demise, Samuel Dexter is in it Pen, go go go. lol.

The late Chroma Senshi Guild and the Wheel of Time Guild both use it. They do a very good job.
