He was in a temper.

After meeting with Pipihindi, the little cub who was practicing being a hunter, he’d given it another shot himself. Yes, he’d called it girl work, told her that boys shouldn’t hunt. But deep down he wanted to so he’d tracked a mouse through the grass. It’d been so close he could have reached out and touched it with a paw. He could remember every detail of its pointed face, its beady eyes. And then it had seen him and dashed.

For a few seconds he could trace its path through the grass and then it began to blur…and then he’d lost it.

So that was why he was angry and that’s why he was hooking his claws into a fallen log and was wrenching bark from the trunk with his short, powerful limbs. The sound of splintering wood could be heard for quite a distance, but he was too upset and angry to take much notice.

Kya was wandering along, ears perked to catch any usual sounds just in case they were interesting and she might want to try and copy them herself. She hadn't yet had a chance to go and find Binafsi again, or the musical pride. But when she did find them, she wanted to be good enough that they wouldn't hesitate to take her in, and teach her!

So when she heard the sound of the wood tearing apart, the young cheetah turned, curious, and headed in that direction.

Coming over a little rise, she blinked at seeing a young lion cub was the cause of the noise. Trotting down toward him, she called out, "Hello! What are you doing?"

Startled, the white-pelted cub swung himself around, spraying splinters of wood beneath his claws as he turned. He bore his fangs, curled his lips into a snarl and let the hackles along his shoulders rise. He’d seen his father and mother portray this kind of posture when they were angry.

“Who’re…” He paused, squinted. What was this thing talking to him? Plants? The thing certainly was green! And then as she drew closer she came into focus and he saw that she was a cub just like himself. Or maybe a little bigger than a cub. Either way, ever since meeting Duzi, Cassian was instantly aware that this might, or might not, be a lion cub.

But until she came into focus he wasn’t quite sure what type of cub she was.

“What does it freaking look like I’m doing?” He snapped. Digging his claws into the log that he was now perching himself on.

Kya blinked and shrank back just a little when the other turned around and snarled at her like that. She hadn't had too many encounters before with anyone who meant her harm, so she was a bit scared. But he didn't really seem angry at her so she straightened up again after a moment or two.

Trying to be friendly and sound sympathetic, Kya let pink eyes widen a bit and stepped just a little closer. "Well ... it looks like you're tearing up that log," she answered, stating the obvious. "I guess... the better question might be why. Did the log do something to you?" she asked, head tilting a little to one side. She didn't think so, but ... at the same time, her question wasn't mocking in any way. Just friendly and perhaps a bit concerned.

Taking a slight pleasure in the way she shrank back from him, he puffed out his chest further and did his best to look most unfriendly. He jutted his jaw and angled his head so he could glance fiercly at her from beneath his heavy brow.

"Then if you knew, you didn't need to ask, stupid." He huffed and withdrew his claws from the log, not turning from her completely, however. He'd learned that turning your back to someone was always a bad idea, especially if they had a reason to attack.

"No, but since there were no other cats around to take my anger out on, I decided to use the log. Since you're here, I could put my claws in your pelt." He laughed. Damn, he was in a foul mood.

Kya didn't back down again, though, frowning slightly. From what she could tell, this other cub didn't seem like he was really mean. More like... upset and frustrated. Or so she hoped.

"But why would you want to do that?" she asked, ears laying back a bit. "I didn't do anything to you either... what's really wrong?"

"I don't have to have a reason to do anything. If I want to do it I just will." He jutted his low jaw and put on his most fiersome face. "My problems ain't got nothing to do with you, hell, they don't have nothing to do with anyone, right?"

He hopped off the log, deciding to move on before his raised voice brought anymore unwanted attention.

"What's with all the questions, huh? Bored, so you thought you'd come and bug an angry lion. That ain't the smartest idea really, is it?"

He turned to face her fully again, narrowing his silver eyes to get a better look at her. "Is it really unknown for youngsters to have problems too, huh? Just cos I ain't an adult yet don't mean there's things not to stress about. Life is hard, one day you'll find that out too." And then he was turning to go.

At that, the cheetah frowned and eyed the other. Why did he keep squinting at her like that? And really, what was with the attitude?

"Then what do your problems have to do with?" she burst out, unable to control herself at the moment. "Maybe I am bored, but if I am, so what? Or maybe I'm curious, or I could be concerned about you, though why, I have no idea!" she kept on going, working herself into a huff.

She rarely got mad, but this cub was annoying.

"Hey! Where are you going?"

He flinched visibly, face contorting into a snarl. What was with this girl? Why couldn't she just take the hint and leave? Why did she have to keep asking him questions? Especially questions regarding his most darkest secret.

"Away from you." He replied. His back was turned to her but he made no move to go any further. Why? Well, he was quite shocked by what she had said. That she was concerned? But why would she be concerned about him? She didn't even know him. Well...except for the fact that he was an angry, bad tempered cat.

He huffed and turned his head back, narrowing his eyes to bring her into better focus. "No one would understand anyway, what makes you any different?"

At that, Kya huffed right back and then padded up closer to him so they were quite suddenly nose-to-nose.

"Try me," she half-growled then, fur standing on end for a moment as she stared at him. Then she backed off just a bit and sat down. "You'll never know what I might understand if you don't say anything at all."

What was he doing? Was he actually considering taking her up on her offer? Was he going to give an explanation and if so, why? Why would he tell her something that he had been desperate to hide from everyone, even his own family?

Maybe because keeping it a secret was having a bad affect on his personality.

Maybe because holding it in was harder than he had imagined, that it caused him pain to do so, to pretend he was okay when deep down he felt as if he were falling apart.

Maybe he just wanted to shut her up.

He growled, whirled around to face her head on and lowered himself as if he intended to pounce, his claws delving into the ground beneath him.

"I'm broken." He replied, the worsts bursting from his mouth as if he couldn't have held them back for any longer, like releasing a breath held for far too long.

"And you will be too if you so much as laugh at that." His hackles rose.

Kya didn't laugh though, the words seeming to rock her back on her heels - so to speak. Something about the way he said it told her that this was something serious.

"I'm not laughing," she said after a moment, quietly - suddenly calm again.

"But what do you mean ... broken? Broken, how?"

"I was born like it, yeah?" He growled, whiskers flinching as he spoke. And now that he had started talking about it, he found that he couldn't stop. It was like opening the floodgates, water pouring uncontrollably and so strong that it was impossible to shut off again until the last drop had fallen free.

"My eyes." He continued. "They don't work right. I can't see!" He shook his head. "No, I can see, just not well enough. Not enough to be able to live how I want to. I can't hunt and that's that." He snarled. "So I gotta rely on someone whether I like it or not."

He dug his claws deeper as if taking his frustration out on the earth. "And if you tell anyone, anyone, about this, then I'll kill you."

Kya flinched just a little at that sudden flood of information. Oh ... well ... that was bad. Really bad, from what she knew. If you couldn't see, you couldn't do a lot of things. Poor thing...

She didn't say that, though, sensing somehow that he might not want to hear how terrible it was all over again. Surely he knew well enough for himself.

Instead, she just looked at him and asked, softly, "Who would I tell...?"

Then, something occurred to her, and her own eyes widened a little. Oh no ... what he was saying, it was familiar somehow. "Uhm. Can I ask you something? And it's not to make fun of you or anything. It's just ... it's important."

He opened his mouth to give a sharp retort, but instead, found nothing he could say in reply. For what she said was true, who would she tell? Why would she tell anyone? His problems didn't matter to anyone but him.

He guessed...he didn't want people to know he was vulnerable. If they found out somehow, then, they might try and attack him.

He lifted his head, brows furrowed, eyes dark, but he nodded and sat, looping his tail around him. "Go on then, let's hear it."
