Martin breathed in deeply, the crisp ocean air stinging his lungs just a bit. He was standing on a grassy hill overlooking a clear bay. He could see fish swimming in the shallows, and even a couple mer soquili. Looking to the meadow behind him, honeysuckle and lavender bloomed by the hundreds. It was a beautiful morning, and Martin was out looking for some herbs and flowers, as his stores were running low.

Time was slowly wasting away...
...wait.
Not slowly, no. Oh dear God how she WISHED it would go slow. No, time was rapidly passing her by, without even the slightest warning. It was like she took a nap, and now ten years came and went! Well not literally ten, but for all she knew, it could have just as well been!

The mare sat there, by the river, staring at her own reflection. It was the only living thing she saw nowadays. Herself. How sad was that? And it wasn't as though she made an attempt anymore, like she used to. Back then when her tail wasn't all tattered and her mane torn out of the once beautiful braid, when she could easily be called a pretty mare. Back then was easy, she could put on a flashy smile and walk up to a stallion without any trouble at all.

But now...all the good ones were either taken, or wouldn't give her a second glance. For days, probably even weeks she tried desperately to throw herself onto any stallion, no matter what he looked like, and it never worked. They always got so freaked out.
And so now Attie decided to give up. Give it all up....all of it. Even the slightest hope of becoming the mare she once was had disappeared with her beauty.

She was a mess, and had no way to fix it. Tears streamed down her face as she tore her gaze away from the water. It was a disgusting sight....she could hardly bare to see it....

Martin trotted more inland, and saw a mare sitting by the stream. As he got closer, he heard her crying. He slowed down to a walk and cautiously approached the saddened mare. He asked gently, "Hey there, are you alright?" His face reddened, and he babbled, "Well, of course you're not alright, your crying, so that must mean something is wrong, but-" He cut himself off and looked into the stream.

"I'm no good at this, am I." He sighed once, and carelessly splashed a hoof in the stream, sending ripples everywhere. He looked back at the mare, my she was a mess, the poor thing.

Any normal soquili would have not heard the stallion approach as quickly as he appeared, they would have not even bothered to expect another to come near them...until they heard a voice, at least. Abattie was different, she had become so obsessed with trying to get in contact with others, that even the slightest noise out of place caught her attention way ahead of time.

So as he approached, she expected him. But her head didn't turn to face him, even as he spoke. A stallion, of course, by the sound of his voice...and it excited her to no end...but was she ready? Did she want to face what she had been longing for for days...even weeks, or did she want to hide away, especially in this state. Surely the stallion would think of her as insane.

But...the mare thought as she cast a glance off in the corner of her eyes, that it was totally worth it. Even a pathetic stallion who was foolish enough to want to know what was wrong with her would be worth talking to. Even for a second. She needed to hear him talk, needed to hear the masculinity that rode in his voice.

So she turned her head, bottom lip quivering just a tad as as forced a small giggle. "You are good. You have to be mighty brave to approach a depressed mare. Most...don't. Which is technically the reason why I'm like this."

Attie took in the sight before her. He was young and boyish, but he was a stallion...

Martin contemplated this answer, obviously this mare was sad and hurt, and it couldn't be from soquili just not talking to her, there must have been something before that that happened, making her sad. He wondered what that was, but decided not to pry into another's buisness. So instead, he tried to see it from her point of view, and decided to play along with her and sympathyze.

So he said aloud, "Well thats not very nice of them, I'm usually happy to have someone to talk to. I travel around a lot, not far, just in the twenty or so acres that surround my two leggers teepee, but no one really comes to our land that often." He paused, and said, "So I guess I don't really have anyone to talk to much either, except for my father and my herdmates, but they're not that talkative anyway." His mouth twitched, thinking of Kiun, but figured it would be best to leave him out.

He wasn't serious, was it? Oh damn he couldn't be serious! Had this stallion no respect for a depressed mare? One should never turn the conversation over to themselves when wanting to comfort another...especially someone like her. That stallion had practically insulted her! A smug looked formed it's way onto her face, but she didn't tear her eyes away from him...she couldn't. He was, after all, a stallion and no matter how foolish of one he was, he was still talking to her...

"Oh." Abattie stated quickly, trying to comprehend what he said before he had a chance to realized she hadn't been paying attention. In truth all she heard was, 'blah, blah, blah...me, me, me...' and wanted none of that! She wanted to be doing the 'me, me, me' thing.

"My Papa is the only one I can talk to now, but I don't know where he is. My sister and brother are always gone, and my Mama's back at home. Papa is...well..." Looking for me most likely, but he wouldn't find me, "out traveling."

Eh, so this stallion wasn't all that bad...he just needed to learn manners! She'd teach him, if he dared to stay....
"My name is Abattie by the way." With all her might, she lifted her body off from the ground (it was very stiff as she had been lying there long) and stood to stare directly at Martin.

"What's yours?" Boy how long had it been since she received a new name?

Martin was pleased that Abattie had stood up. It made him feel uncomfortable to talk to someone on the ground. He dipped his head respectfully, and said in return, "I'm Martin, pleased to meet you Abattie." He smiled, and said, "Your father sounds very adventurous." He noticed as she stood up she was a little stiff, she had probably been sitting there for a very long time. But at least she had stopped crying, that was good. And hopefully he had managed to make her forget about what had made her sad in the first place.
