User ImageOhh... the weather was a tad too hot today.

That was the only thought running through Valerian's mind at the moment as he lay, panting hard, against the scraggly bark of a large, leafy tree. He supposed he was luckier than most, though; although a somewhat darker shade, his pelt was much lighter than the majority of the other winiko at home. Flopping out onto his side and smushing down some more grass around him, his eyes moved slowly from the cloudless sky to the shimmering waters of the nearby pond. Wouldn't be a bad day for a swim... would it?

Sitting back up, the demon pondered splashing into the crystal clear waters before him. He didn't necessarily like being wet, but he wouldn't mind it if it meant he was cooler than he was now...

As much as she wanted to, Cali was just simply unable to hold her breath any longer. She grudgingly turned back to the surface and swam up into the air with a loud expulsion of breath. Then giggled because she had made a weird sound.

Her dumb familiar was hovering right above her head as soon as she came up. "Ugh, go away!" She yelled at it, splashing at the same time and getting absolutely no reaction from the clingy stupid orb. She rolled her eyes in annoyance and dragged another one of her treasures to the shore, then tossed it onto the small pile she had collected. So far she had seven squishy moss ball things, some were as big around as her head! Now she just needed to figure out what to do with them.

So enraptured was she in her moss ball task, that she jumped about three feet in the air when she finally noticed the orange haired Winiko against the tree. "Oh! Er, hi! Didn't see you there. Would you like a squishy ball thing? I've got plenty."

Highly bemused at this new arousal of noise, Valerian's steely-hued eyes watched as the other winiko popped up from the water's surface, immediately swatting away her familiar. He sat quiet for a moment, merely watching to see what she would do next. A laugh came from his throat as she startled; he hadn't meant to intrude, after all. Standing, he shook his mane out and stepped closer to the shoreline, tail swishing back and forth delicately behind him.

"Hello," he replied cheerfully, nodding his head to her, "I would love one... what are they?" he stared at the ball for a moment, tilting his head back and forth at different angles. Certainly a cool thing, but what the heck was it?

Cali shook herself from head to flank, spraying water in all directions. "Well, I'm not actually sure. But they seem to float around near the bottom of the water. They are squishy and fun to throw, but they don't taste very good." She grimaced, remembering that experience. "Here," she said as she kicked one over to him.

The mossy ball rolled with a slurping noise, depositing water in it's wake. Cali looked this new Winiko over and smiled. It had been awhile since she'd met any unfamiliar faces. "I'm Calidrya by the way. Or, Cali if you prefer. What's your name?" Her familiar took this opportunity of her distraction to bump into the back of her head. She let out an annoyed sigh and swatted at him with a clawed paw. "Oh, yeah. The stupid orb is Thing."

The demon laughed. "Well, it certainly doesn't look like it tastes that great," he said, chuckling softly, "But if I were you, I probably would have done the same thing." He paused as she spoke, and grinned at the introduction. "Cali? That's... a very pretty name," he replied, tipping his head to her, "My name in Valerian, but most just call me 'Val'."

His eyes glanced to the paint-splattered familiar that was lurking to his rear. "That one... it doesn't have a name, I guess. I just refer to it as "hey you", since it's mostly the only one around. It's not so bad, I guess. Kind of quiet." It bobbed a bit in the air, ears twitching.

"Thing is a... fitting name, though." he added, tailing his head at an odd angle to look at the familiar's spines, "It's a little wacky, isn't it?"

Cali nodded in agreement. "It is pretty strange. Not that it does much, but it's so clingy!" She nudged him away to emphasize her point, and groaned in annoyance when it swiftly returned to bob right around her head.

"Anyways, at least yours doesn't seem to be such a bother." She looked the bobbing thing over and donned a quizical expression. "Where do you think they come from? Mine just showed up one day and wouldn't go away. I asked my human, but she just kept laughing and wouldn't answer." She finished this sentence by rolling her eyes.

Valerian laughed once more; the sound was deep and full, but still high enough in register for someone to recognize him as a young demon and not an old fart. He was rather enjoying himself, after all- he had never given much thought to the little familiars that followed many demons around, but now that Cali had inquired about it, his interest had been piqued.

"Mine? Yeah, it's pretty quiet, I guess," he replied, a smile stuck on his face. He glanced back at the thing, watching as it bobbed a bit closer to him. "My bonded never said anything about them- I've had mine as long as I can remember. I'm sure they have something to do with it, though." Another chuckle. "After all, they can't just wander about on their own until they find a demon to stick with, right?"

Cali nodded absently while staring at Thing as he bobbed about. She was completely lost in her own thoughts. She registered what Val said of course, but her brain was on a whole mind kick of its own.

"Mmmhmmm. Right. Hey! Maybe there is a giant flock of them in the sky or whatever, and then they watch us, right? From the sky. Then, when they see someone they think would make a good victim they swoop down and become as annoying as possible. Or maybe the human things control them somehow...." She shook her head and shrugged. "It's all very confusing."

Valerian smiled, a charming, content expression on his face. "That's always a possibility," he replied, tail twitching a bit as the floating thing brushed against it, "Though... we probably won't know the truth for some time."

He paused, thinking hard for a moment.

"Unless, of course, we go straight to the source." He whipped around playfully, pinning the floating orb with a large, furred paw. "Where did you come from?" he inquired, quirking an eyebrow at it. When, as assumed, it didn't reply, Valerian released it with a laugh.

"Well, it was worth a try, after all."

Cali giggled and tried to catch Thing as well, but he was too quick for her and kept swooping under her belly.

"It's not a bad idea though. Too bad neither of us have wings. We could fly up and check it out." She craned her neck back to take a look at the fluffy clouds and shrugged. "It doesn't seem too far."

She turned her eyes from the sky and looked back over at Val. "You know, your eyes are a strange color. Are you blind? My bonded was watching a movie with a blind human in it and her eyes looked kind of like yours."

"Yeah, wings... I've seen a few in my time, but I've never really thought of having them myself." He, too, craned his gaze to look up at the puffy masses of clouds, a serene expression on her face. His ear flicked as he listened to her question.

"No, not quite blind," he replied, returning said eyes to her face, "Though my vision is a little strange; color blind, maybe, but I still have my sight." He paused, thinking for a moment. "At some point maybe I'll lose my sight, but hopefully not for some time. I mean, that wouldn't be very fun now, would it?" He laughed, shaking his head a bit to ruffle his mane.

"Weird." She tried to imagine what being color blind would be like. It seemed scary.

She then shook her head vigorously. "Of course being blind wouldn't be fun! You'd probably knock into stuff all the time. Plus, it would be hard to go swimming if you couldn't see anything." She blinked her own large red eyes, taking more appreciation of them than usual.

"Hmmm... speaking of which. Would you like to go swimming?" Her fur was still slightly damp from her recent treasure hunting, and despite the heat of the day, it was actually a little cold in the breeze. She shivered and flicked one clawed paw. She would feel much better in the water.

Valerian smiled, nodding in agreement; "Yeah," he started, "You'd certainly miss out on a lot of things." His ears swiveled to her as she mentioned 'swimming'.

"Well, I know how but I usually don't go," he replied, eyes shifting towards the shimmering surface of the pond, "But seeing as today is so hot, I guess it couldn't hurt to go for a little bit, right?"

He somehow spotted her shivering and stepped forward, tail lazily swaying back and forth behind him. "You can show me where you found those weird moss things, right? I think they'd be pretty cool to see." His claws sunk into the damp ground as he stepped closer to the water's edge and paused at Cali's side, eyes narrowing playfully as the water lapped against the shore.

Cali laughed and turned to him with a grin. "Swimming definitely can't hurt! It's just water, and water can't really hurt you. Well... I guess it could if it was struck by lightning or it was being squirted at you really hard. Anyways, swimming is pretty much the most amazing thing ever." With another laugh, she splashed her way into the pond. Her lack of grace on land was made up for by her natural agility in water. With a flick of her paws, she twirled around in a circle before swiveling to face Val again.

"The mossy ball things are at the very bottom. They kind of litter the floor like... squishy carpet." She gave a nod of her head and flicked a few wet locks of hair out of her eyes. "Come on in!"

Valerian weaved back and forth a bit on the spot, face pulled into an indecisive expression. Well, it was hot out...

Lifting a paw, he set it into the water, rather liking the cooling effect it had. Looking out to watch her paddle around with ease, he placed his other front foot in after him, wriggling his rear contently as he got used to the feel of water on his fur. His summer coat was short anyways, but it still felt a little odd to be soaked by water.

"Okay, only because you asked, though." he said, laughing. Closing his eyes, he plunged forward into the pond, stopping only when it was up to his chin. "It's not too deep, right?"

He opened his eyes, mane floating strangely about him like odd, orange seaweed. "I just don't want to sink." He laughed again, shaking his bangs from his eyes and beginning to paddle himself forward little by little.
