Kya was really glad that she'd met that lioness a while ago! She hadn't had a chance yet to ask her mother about going to learn from the pride that Binafsi had told her about, but she'd been practicing.
And as she slowly got older, Kya was getting more independent as well. She was starting to think that even if she got a 'no' (which ... honestly, she was likely to) she might just go anyway. She wanted to learn!
Wanted to know how to make more sounds, more different types of beats and music and ... and everything!
So today, she'd gone out again and found a small hollow log to practice on, leaning back on her rump and smacking at the log with forepaws. She was currently completely engrossed in her drumming, frowning a bit with her tongue sticking out just a little. Had to get this one right...

Jethro was moving over the grounds slowly. Normally he was eager to bound over the landscape, watching the brush whiz by in a blur of greens and browns. Not today, however. Today he was more focused on keeping his eyes open. It had been a long night for him, for whatever reason. His dreams had kept him from more than a couple of hours of sleep.
As he walked, he noticed something very vibrant in the distance. The kind of green he never expected to see on the lands. It was a very nice shade, not dull like all the other plants he had come to know all too well.
Curious, he got closer.
Once he was close enough to realize it was a young lady and not a new plant, Jethro smiled. What a strange pelt! In a good way, of course. Blinking, he noticed the creature was smacking a log around like it had committed a crime.
“What are you doing?” he asked softly, not wanting to startle her, but too curious to keep quiet.

Kya had been concentrating rather hard, though, so even with his voice quiet, the older lion still startled her. Jumping back away from the log a bit, her ears flattened down against her head for a moment, looking up. Oh! It was a lion, and he was big!
"Oh a-ah... just ... trying to get this log to make the kind of sound I want..." she said, blinking up at him. "Is it... your log?" That would be just great, if she'd managed to trespass somehow...

"Oh!" gasped Jethro, frightened by her... fright, "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to startle you!" he smiled, his dorky expression meant to assure her that he wasn't there to cause her harm. He would sooner hurt himself than hurt a cub.
laughing at her question, the large male let his mane dance about as he shook his head. "No, it's not my log. I don't think anyone would mind you using it. But what do you mean you're trying to get the log to make a certain sound? May I listen?"

Kya instantly brightened at that, perking up a bit and straightening to look up at the other. She'd only been worried that she was doing something he wouldn't like... she wasn't afraid, not at all!
"I hope not," she said in reply, with a quick little smile. "After all, logs should belong to everybody, right?" Then a little pause, and she nodded. "You can listen if you want ... It's ... it's like I hear sounds and beats in my head. And I want to hear them out loud too," she explained, head tilting. "I met a really nice lioness a little while ago who told me it's easier if you use something like a log! So I'm practicing... "

Jethro listened, smiling. “Well that sounds pretty cool!” he said lightly, not having heard anything like it before in his travels. Hitting a log to make enjoyable sounds? It seemed kind of strange to him, but not entirely silly. Perhaps it was something that interested only certain creatures. Like how exploring was his main focus, though some preferred to keep in one pride and have a good time with family there. Not bad, just different.
Whatever floats your boat.
He watched her, then the log. “So are you very good at it?” he asked, not sure if he would even be able to tell the difference between someone who was good at hitting a log to someone who was bad.

Kya pulled a bit of a face at the older male's question, thinking about her answer for a minute or two. He probably didn't know much about this, so she could claim to be good, and there'd be no way he could tell. But then again, it usually wasn't nice to lie, and that would be a lie. Plus, what if he ever met someone else that was really good? Then she'd look really stupid.
"Noooot really. Or at least I don't think so," she answered, a cheerful note still in her voice. "I just started... but I know I'll get better!"

“I’m sure you’re great,” Jethro replied, refusing to believe that she didn’t have talent. Hell, just knowing about such a skill showed she had some kind of talent- he hadn’t even known about it before meeting her.
“That’s the spirit!” He laughed at her addition. Even though he thought she was probably better than she was telling him, it was still nice to see she was ready to get better. Life was about learning. How could one live without improving on –something-?
Moving closer, he sat himself on the other side of the log, not wanting to get too close and startle her. “Show me something,” he hummed, “I’ll follow you!”

Pale pink eyes widened at that, and Kya blurted out, "Wait, you want me to teach you? I don't think I'm that good!"
But still ... it wouldn't hurt to try, right? Hmm... something simple to start out with? It would be pretty obvious if he wasn't any good at all. Though it might be tricky to tell him that.
"We-ell ... ok. Try to do this," she said, frowning as she beat out a simple sort of rhythm on her side of the log. Her tongue poked out just a bit from one side of her mouth as she concentrated, trying to make the sounds really clear for him.

At her less-than-enthused response Jethro gave a laugh. So she didn’t think she was good enough to teach. That was fine, as he didn’t think he was good enough to learn. That meant they could suck together.
It would be glorious
“Alright,” he hummed merrily, striking the log to try and follow the beats she played for him. As it turned out, the large male had no musical talent whatsoever. After a few moments of failed attempts to copy the beats, Jethro sighed, putting his paws against the ground.
“I don’t think I’m very good at this,” he said, in no worse a mood than when he had asked her to teach him, “but you seem to be very good at it!”

Kya winced at the older male's attempts, trying not to obviously flatten her ears down at the wrongness of it. His beats were all off and he either hit the log too hard or too soft - but all at the wrong times.
Terrible!
Still, she smiled a bit weakly. "A-ah... you're not ... that bad," she said, trying to be polite.

Jethro laughed lightly at his blunder, taking it in stride. “Seems like it almost caused you pain to listen to it! Don’t worry, I know it didn’t sound any good, you don’t have to be nice,” he hummed through a smile, “but it was fun trying it out! You’re much better than I am.”
He looked down at the log. Maybe it was defective? Or maybe his paws were just too big to make good sounds like Kya could.
Or maybe he just, you know, sucked at it.

At that, Kya actually looked a bit relieved and nodded quickly. "Yea, uhm. Actually ... you kind of suck. But I didn't want to be mean and say that!" she said quickly. If he realized it himself, though...
Ducking her head a little, she glanced up at him. "Sorry. I guess not everyone can do it ... "
It had been nice of him to try, though.

Well, he had told her she didn’t have to be nice about. This was her… not being nice. He continued to smile, though inwardly found himself disappointed. Perhaps one day he would stumble across a useful skill. But he wasn’t holding his breath; the large animal didn’t seem to have a lot of talents hidden between his massive paws.
“Don’t worry about it,” he assured her, “it makes it that much more impressive that you can manage it, right? And I bet you feel better about your skills now that you’ve heard mine!” he hummed happily.
“So,” he said, relaxing against his back legs, tails beating the dirt contently, “where did you learn this sort of thing? It seems like something very rare indeed.”

Kya tilted her head a little, ears going back juuust a bit as she seemed to sense somehow that she'd managed to upset him anyway. But only for a moment. Once he relaxed again, she did too and smiled up at the older lion.
"I suppose... I've heard there's a pride around here that has lots of others who know how to make rhythm!" she said then, puffing up a little. "I want to be good enough to join it ... but ... I think I'll have to leave Mama. She doesn't like anyone of another species..."
