Nate was wandering about the mall, glancing in various stores. He didn't like it when the mall got crowded, but during the day it wasn't usually too bad. Unless it was a weekend or a holiday. But for now, the mall was rather empty and Nate didn't have to worry about accidentally burning someone by bumping into them.
He was standing outside of the toy store, debating whether or not to go in. He'd just gotten some new toys the other day... and he was broke as well.

Luna had managed to convince her mom that she was old enough to cruise the mall on her own. Well, relatively on her own - she assumed her older sister was wandering around somewhere else in the mall. The two of them had decided to split up into their own pursuits when they saw how empty the mall was and now she was wandering around looking at various store fronts. She actually did have some money of her own to spend, but she had best keep her purchases small.
She found herself standing outside a toy store, looking at the various toys that were running on display. There was a familar sense coming from beside her and it felt like the air conditioner wasn't quite working where she was standing. She glanced over to see an oddly dressed teen standing there. A teen at a toy store? Admittedly, she was trying to outgrow toys herself, but at least she skimmed under the "child age limit" still.

Nate felt a sort of familiar feeling once again. The first time he'd felt it, he'd thought it was his mother... but it had turned out to be some green girl who didn't like heat. The boy glanced around before spotting Luna. That was definitely the source of the tingling feeling. Nate smiled at the girl and gave a little wave to her.

Luna returned the smile tentatively and gave a small wave back, worry growing inside. Was the teen the source of the strage sense? She certainly hoped so - she was hard-placed to ignore her mother's warnings about the things older men might do to younger girls like her if they got the girls alone. She could vaguely sense her sister moving about in the mall, but she wasn't the familar-yet-not-familar sense she was feeling more strongly at the moment.
She took a peek around - it was just the two of them, so that sense had to becoming from the teen, right? She blinked at the teen, hoping he was a scroll child like her and not some perverted dude hunting little kids; her mother would never forgive her if she actually went off with some unknown person after all those warnings, even if they felt like a scroll child.

Nate thought that the girl looked nervous. Was he scary looking or something? The boy tried not to frown at that thought and instead moved closer to Luna. He might as well remember his manners... "Hi, I'm Nate!" He almost offered a hand to her, but quickly stopped that before it even really got started. So his hand twitched just a bit. Stupid heat....

The teen stepped closer and Luna could have sworn the heat around her increased before she took a step back and gripped her hands together behind her back to keep him from seeing them shake. "Er, hi. I'm Luna..." She eyed him carefully, noting the hand twitch, as she stated, "My mommy told me that strange people might try to be friendly with me just to make off with me." She kept her hands clasped together behind her back, although she was ready to fight back if need be. But... there was still the strange sensation that she couldn't shake, and she knew it wasn't her sister... For some reason, every time she tried to figure out where it came from, her eyes came back to rest on the teen. But... he's a teen. If he was a scroll child, where's the evidence of his scroll image?

Nate paused and blinked for a moment at that. "Really?" The boy frowned and almost plopped himself onto the floor to sit, but managed to keep some dignity about him. "Oh... but... you feel like that little boy I met earlier today... And other scroll kids feel like you, too... Are you one?"
Nate was clearly confused about Luna's attitude. She felt so... nice, but he seemed to be scaring her... He didn't like scaring people. That made him feel bad.

Luna tried not to stare. That reaction was too real to be fake. Didn't he know? "Yeah, really." How could he not know?
She actually did stare at him in shock when he mentioned the scroll children. "Er, maybe. Are you one?" she countered.
She felt a bit bad for making him feel bad, but what with all her mother told her (and scaring her a good deal in the process), she couldn't be certain if he actually was feeling bad for scaring her or if it was an act... Something told her it wasn't an act, however.

Nate nodded. "Mmhmm. My scroll's a comet. Daddy said it's a thing in the sky and showed me some pictures. They're really pretty... but really far away and apparently get really hot..." That was where his power came from, he'd been told. He wished it wasn't that. Being hot hurt people.

"Hot?" Luna's expression went blank at that. His ability was to be hot? Wait... "You're why it feels like there's no air conditioning?" She blinked rapidly for a moment at that thought. Well, there was the evidence of a scroll image, although she thought heat would be associated more with the sun then comets. "Mine's the moon. I glow in sync with the moon's cycle - the less you see, the dimmer my glow, the more you see, the brighter the glow." She blushed slightly. "It's a bit bright to tell now, but I am glowing, honest." She seemed to trust him a lot more now that she knew he was a scroll child like her. At least she now knew where that familiar sense was coming from!

Nate blushed and nodded a bit shyly. "Yeah... Sorry. I can't control it very well yet..." He was working on that, granted, but he was still a ways off from being a normal temperature. "You glow?" That had to be a really cool ability. Much better than his! Nate scowled mentally at that. Why did all the other scroll kids have much cooler powers than his? Quite literally, too...

Luna tapped her lower lip thoughtfully. "My sister said something about meeting someone who couldn't help but radiate heat once... Seemed a bit apologetic too, although I could never figure out why..."
She blinked when Nate seemed enthusiastic about her ability. Why was it that at least half the scroll kids she met always seemed to like her scroll ability better than their own? "Uh, yeah, I glow." Hopefully he wouldn't mention trying to go get into the basement or something to see her ability like last time...

"Your sister?" Nate thought for a few moments on that. He hadn't really met any girls before... except Nara and that green plant girl... He was glad he didn't have any siblings. He liked having his Daddy all to himself. "Glowing sounds neat, much better than my ability... I burn people when they get too close..." The boy frowned at that. Burning hurt, apparently.

"Yeeeaaaahhhh..." Luna drew the word out. "She's also a scroll kid. Poison Ivy for an image. Has to be careful who she touches with her bare skin because they might get rashes from the same kinds of oil her scroll image usually puts out." Bit much information given there, but it wasn't like Luna knew that. She frowned when he put down his own ability, but wanted to say the faults on her own first. "Glowing sounds neat, sure, but do you know how hard it is to sneak around at night? Everyone always knows exactly where you are. And it's hard to sleep with all that light some nights. And you... Well, you'll never freeze. You can keep others from freezing. You might be able to cut through metal walls like a torch. It'd be hard for anyone to kidnap you." She thought for a moment. "Have you ever tried to go swimming? Maybe all that water would dampen the heat you normally radiate."

Nate blinked. This girl's sister sounded like she suffered a lot like him. But at least people could get close to her without getting too warm... "Hmm... I never thought about that... hard to get a midnight snack if you glow..."
His eyes widened at all the things the girl thought up about his own power... "Wow, yeah. Though... I have problems controlling the heat, sometimes..." Well, most of the time, but he didn't want to sound like he was a complete wimp. "Swimming? No... I don't even get wet when it rains... it all evaporates first..." Then again, he hadn't exactly stood out in the middle of a storm, either. Maybe he could swim? If nothing else, he'd turn it into a sauna... and people liked those!
