Meena drifted along, not entirely sure that she had a destination in mind. As she walked, she thought of going to the Lake, which whilst being an easy to find landmark, was also a major watering hole for the area. She held a faint hope that maybe one of her family members would be there, she felt a pressing need for company, and conversation. She had been lonely long enough.

As she neared the bank, looking down from the side into the water, and then across its surface, eyes scanning as far as she could see, she felt a sinking. There was no one, and it meant she had to move on again, and hope that her mother or her sisters would be near the Village.

Meena huffed in irritation, moving right to the water's edge and taking a long drink, the liquid cold on her lips. She stood, giving a shake, sending the braids in mane and tail flying around her for a moment, until she settled and so did they. She let out a sigh, pausing to give the Lake another look before she turned away from it.

Water. Water was a good thing, especially after spending the morning flying about, as Diego had. There was a part of him that wanted to plunge into the water from above. The wiser portion reminded him that it would be a bad idea to go quite that far for the sake of fun, but he still let the thought rattle around in his brain for a moment or two as he circled.

Not too crowded today. Plenty of room to land, and then the motion of the mare's braids flying around caught his attention. Company was almost as good as water! No, better. So he tucked his wings and flew down, landing relatively neatly a few paces away from the mare. He flicked his wings so his feathers would lie straight, folded them again, and looked her way. "Hope you don't mind me coming down to say hello."

Meena blinked at the stallion's rather sudden appearance, little flashing dots in her vision because of his strange patterning. She raised an eyebrow, she supposed he was fairly attractive to look at but the dots were making her eyes go a little peculiar.

She supposed that if she was to make conversation with him she would just have to let her eyes get used to it.

'I don't own the land, so it isn't as though I can stop you.' she replied, sounding a little snippity, but really, she had wanted to only see one of her female relations. She wanted comfort, to bemoan about her loneliness and the fickleness of stallions to someone who would understand, but instead she had to be polite.

'You aren't going to flirt with me or anything are you? I really don't think I could put up with that from someone else who I might never see again.'
Meena supposed that was also rather outspoken and forward of her, but time and circumstances had changed her once sunny outlook on life. And males.
'What's your name anyway? I can't keep calling you 'Dotty' in my head after all.'

Blink.

Diego blinked again. Opened his mouth to answer, thought of nothing, and closed it again. So he exhaled, nostrils flaring for a second. Huh. Well. Was he going to flirt? He hadn't intended to, but she was pretty. Just. Not the friendliest mare he'd met.

Right. He cleared his throat. "I. Just thought I'd say hello," he hedged. "No flirting," he promised. He'd try anyway. "Just hello." And now that that was done...oh! "Diego. My name's Diego." He paused and tipped an ear cautiously. "What's yours?"

Meena snorted;
'Well, I am glad we got that sorted out up-front. Stallions are allll the same.' she said, with a roll of her eyes.

'They talk to you, tell you that you're beautiful, that they think they have feelings for you..and then nothing. They vanish.'
The mare coughed, suddenly realising that she was probably sounding increasingly bitter..or crazy. She sighed, looking at Diego.

'I'm sorry, you don't deserve this, I'm sure you're very nice and all that. It's just..well, I don't like feeling as though I've been discarded like an old apple core.' she kicked the ground with a hoof.

'I am Meena, and pleased to meet you Diego, though if you don't believe me on that score, I wouldn't blame you.'

"But you are beau--" he started before he stopped himself, almost literally biting his tongue.

Right. Moving on. "I believe you," he said and smiled. "And I'm sorry you feel like an apple core." Not that he was sure what exactly that felt like. "But."

Hooboy, dangerous ground.

"Not all stallions are the same."

She flashed the stallion a look, daring him to finish that sentence, giving a faint smile when he swiftly stopped himself.

'A discarded apple core..' Meena corrected, with a trace of humour. She listened to him and then nodded.

'I am aware of that Diego. But I'm also aware that you'll spin any lines that think a mare would want to hear, so you could be doing the same. But pretending that you are different, you see?'

She chewed on one of her braids for a moment, just looking straight at him. After a while of that she broke the silence by asking;
'So what are you doing around here? Do you have herdmates in this area?'
Meena decided that she would at least attempt to be civil to the stallion, she had just met him after all.

He still wasn't sure about the apple core issue. He didn't spit out apple parts. It wasn't enough to trouble him badly, though, so he just agreed that it must not be nice to feel that way, silently, and let it go.

"My herd's back that way." He tipped a wing, aiming his primaries back toward the forest. "But the mares are talking." He didn't roll his eyes, but if he could have made air quotes around the word, he probably would have. "I decided to go for a flight. Then I saw the water and I got thirsty. Then I saw you." And he smiled. He couldn't help himself.

'Why is so wrong for the mares of your herd to be talking?' Meena asked, her head canted to one side. Then something occurred to her and she gave a small grin.

'Or are they talking about you, and not to you? Are they not worshipping your madly patterned self enough?' she spoke in a cheeky fashion. She was sure he could take it. Of course Meena knew that mares could gossip, and could make stallions feel left out of their conversations, or uncomfortable by all of them suddenly stopping and just staring at a male till he walked away, but he would have to get used to that if he was in a herd.

'I suppose you did see me. And I saw you. And you stopped to talk to me. A curious Soquili would wonder why, given that I am in fact a mare.'

"There's nothing wrong with talking." That wasn't what he meant at all. "It's just that they talk all the time. About everything." And yes, they ignored him, but that wasn't really the point either. "Sometimes it's just nice to be quiet."

Not that being worshipped for his patterns would hurt his ego any, but, also not the point.

He flicked an ear and tilted his head. Somewhere along the way, something had gotten mixed up. "I don't mind talking to mares. I like talking to mares."

'Oh you do, do you? I wonder why I wouldn't think that.' Meena mused out loud, a brow raised in amusement at the stallion's back-peddling. She supposed it was nice to be quiet when you had the choice of it, but being alone also meant unwelcome silence.

'Besides, as you put it, not all stallions are the same. And, in the same vein not every mare is given to gossip at every conceivable moment.' she said in a pointed fashion.

'And what is it you like to talk to mares about? You seem as though you are around them alot after all.'
Was this Diego a lothario sort of stallion? Maybe he just told a mare anything they wanted to hear.

Why did he feel like he was having two conversations at once? Diego studied Meena for a long moment, pondering his answer. Wingtips twitching. Answer the wrong way and she'd just get more upset. But if he made something up, she'd probably sniff it out and say he was just saying it because she was a mare. And stallions did that.

Which. Confused him even further.

But there was nothing to do but try again.

"There are two mares in my herd, so of course I'm around them a lot." That made sense, right? "And I'll talk about anything. What there is to graze on, where the best place is to fly or what the clouds look like or which flowers smell best. But sometimes, I just want to stand."

'So you like to talk when you're in the mood, and be quiet and reflective when you're not?'
Meena summed up with a smirk. She was like that, but for some reason he'd had trouble expressing exactly that. Maybe it was because she was being snippity? Well he would have to get used to that, especially if any of the herd mares became pregnant.

'So you have family members in the herd you belong to, or a partner, or children even?' she was being a little nosey she supposed, but idle conversation about the weather seemed so boring.

He'd never thought of it as being reflective. The word just didn't occur so he hadn't used it. He might have to in the future, because it did fit. "Exactly. That's exactly it. Thank you."

Diego shook his head. "None of us are related. No mates. No foals. What about you and yours? Do you have a lot of family?"

'No special mare huh? You do surprise me.' Meena said, moving off slowly, away from the Lake and under the shelter of a nearby tree, giving him one small glance to see whether he would follow. The sun had beat down too long on her back and she was becoming uncomfortably warm.

'I have a large family yes. I'm one of seven children. Three sisters, two brothers. I have nieces and nephews. And they've had children. My mother's line is extensive.'

Meena didn't mention her father as she knew that he'd been absent for a while, which was causing her mother sadness. When he returned and made it up to Ardia, then she would consider him kindly.
