So, I've been thinking: What is it that makes a good game? The answer is a good villain. The next question becomes, what goes into making a good villain? That got me into all kinds of off-topic thoughts; how much time does a villain spend on his plans, how hard does he have to try to keep fighting off those annoying, thorn-in-the-side heroes, how does he go about attaining his evil minions, etc. etc. That's when it came to me: What would make a really good game is one in which you are the villain.

That's how the idea for World's End came about. This is going to be a fairly ambitious first shot at a full RPG Maker game, a huge project where you get to chose everything from your gender to which of three classes you will start in. You will get to choose who among your enemies lives and dies, and it will be you who has to constantly encounter and defeat that annoying party of heroes that's constantly hounding your trail.

I'll post updates on the game's progress as they come. For now, I'm going to go get started!

Very ambitious for a first game, but you'll also learn a lot of things. smile Good luck, and I can't wait for your first updates.

Update #1:

As this is an immensely large project, I've decided that I'm going to make a Demo map first. This Demo will be something of a prequel to my game, "World's End." It will consist of a single dungeon crawl in which the players control the main group of heroes that will appear as the antagonists in World's End, and it will set the stage for the villain's birth into that world.

Progress: So far I've got the first floor of Fort Bastion working, but there's still three upper floors, the Castle Spire and the Castle Tower to complete along with three optional basement floors.

I've also gotten the initial events for World's End finished, but I'm not going to go any farther then that until everything is mapped out in the demo.

Update #2

Good news, the demo is done and 100% playable! I just need to find a place to upload it so I can post it on the internet for public play and criticism. Can anybody tell me how this is done, please?

Anyway, I suppose I should give you an overview of the demo, huh?

Following the events that lead up to the beginning of World's End, the Tubbyman Inc. Demo Game gives you the heroes point of view. In a kingdom called Elusia, the General, Mordekian, and the High Cleric, Ocotto, have conspired to overthrow the late king's son, Marcus, and take the throne from him, resulting in a bloody civil war. The heroes are a group of Royalist Insurgents trying to put Prince Marcus back on the throne. The game takes you through Fort Bastion, where Mordekian and Ocotto are holding mock peace talks to lure the Royalists out into the open. It also gives you the chance to sneak in with swords swinging to assassinate the two corrupt leaders...

With an average of two hours in gameplay and a "secret" area to access when the main story is done, the demo keeps players going with a high rate of weaker random encounters and a good number of boss fights, three of which are actually tough. Completing the "Secret" area and speaking with Prince Marcus after the main story is complete allows you to view the "Secret" ending, in which you get to see the villain himself wrecking havoc as only he can.

A full walkthrough of the demo is coming in Update 3, for anybody who cares enough to go back and get 100% on the demo game after the first time through. I'll give it a few days after the game file is posted to allow you all a first play-through before I put that update in, though.

Well, you could always try MediaFire.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 26, 2008 12:24 am

K. And should I do anything to the game file before I upload it or is it good to go as is?

Either way, the compressed file is available for download here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ewndvxxn9md

Edit: For the record, I do intend to do several game upgrades to coincide with my work on World's End, including a terrain upgrade that will include actual walls, not just ceilings, and may or may not have broader, more wide-open maps that are all linked together rather then one room after the next(If this is the case I'll also be taking the encounter rate down a considerable bit and making the random enemies a tad more powerful and GP/XP-rewarding).

Edit 2: The above dowlnoad has a slight glitch in one of its secret events. The link to the site with the fixed version is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?zcybj9xcz0y

Actually, I was just about to tell you that you should compress it. xd

I tell you what I think of it after I finish it. Or if I run into any glitches or anything. ninja

Sure thing ^_^ Lookin' forward to the feedback.

Well, so far I really like it.
Especially the dialogue. That's some great stuff right there. xd

I ran into a couple problems though. In the sanctum, after I activate the blue orb, and go through the door that appears (speaking of which, it's white until I use the action button on it, then it changes to a steel door), the blue orb re-appears. Also, it keeps making me fight the dragon everytime I try to go through the north exit of the room.
PostPosted: Fri Jun 27, 2008 10:24 am

Ya, I dunno how to fix the steel door thing, I don't even have that graphic set up to appear in the event o.o

However, I can fix the blue orb and the dragon easily enough ^_^

Actually, I just thought of what might be wrong with the door.
Provided of course event creation is still the same in VX as it is for the other versions.
In the event window for the door, there might be an option called "Direction Fix" or something along those lines, try checking it/activating it.

Update #3

The first game update, which features a version of the super-secret ending that I consider 'Better' due to its upgraded scenery, is now complete! As soon as MediaFire finishes its site maintenance, I'll make it available for download.

Also, I did promise to give you a full walkthrough so you could experience the full scope of the things to come in Tubbyman Inc. Gaming, did I not? Well, I'm the kind of guy who always does his damnedest to deliver, so here you go, the official Tubbyman Inc. Strategy Guide/Walkthrough to the Tubbyman Inc. Demo Game!

The demo that is used with this strategy guide can be downloaded here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q1RFHMJX

Characters

Paladin: The main character of this story, the Paladin served with General Mordekian in the most recent war of Elusia. Cool and business-minded, the Paladin is the one who really pushes the party along on their quest.

Thief: A long-time friend of the Paladin, the Thief is the butt end of a lot of jokes. As a result, he capitalizes on every chance he can get to make other party members look bad, especially when he makes himself look good in the process. Naming the thief Retard can have some very satisfyingly funny results.

Warrior: Tough and simple-minded, the Warrior is a strong personality. He met the Paladin during the war and joined the Royalist movement largely out of his respect for the Paladin as a commander. He is superstitious as well, and though he'll never admit it, is quite afraid of ghosts. Name the warrior HULK in all caps for the best results.

Sorceress: The unofficial dunce of the team, Sorceress is the typical ditzy blond. She once studied in Fort Bastion's Arcane Sanctum when she was first becoming a mage, and has a considerable knowledge of its intricasies.

Walkthrough

Floor 1 (lv. 5-6)

After getting the particulars of your party set up, you start in the main hall of Fort Bastion. There's a staircase straight in front of you, as well as two doors - one to your left and one to your right. You can try to go up the staircase if you really want to, but it won't let you until you get the key a bit later on. For now, just go through the door on your left.

Here, you'll wind up in a hallway with five doors in it, two to your left, two to your right and one straight above. Just for right now, you'll want to use the bottom left door. That'll take you to an abandoned dining area with a treasure chest in the top left. Ignore the door on the bottom, you can't get to it until you finish later parts of the game. Open the chest for 200 gold, then leave from the top door.

You wind up back in the five-door room, this time in the top-left door area. You can run across the hall to the top-right door to wind up in the area you saw above the entrance hall when you first started. The doors leading up end in rooms with treasure chests in them. Emptying them out can get you some useful items. Equip your party before exiting to the right.

You're now in another five-door room. Again, ignore the top area; you can't do anything there until later on in the game. Just head across to the right for now. After a brief cinematic, you get to have your first miniboss fight! Yaay!

Guard Captain

HP: 1,500
MP: 40

This boss fight is exceedingly easy. You have to really try and have a lot of talent if you want to lose. Just keep attacking the guy with the Thief and the Warrior, use Fire with the Sorceress and, when the Paladin isn't healing every once in a while, have him attack as well. It's only a matter of time before the guard captain goes down.

Defeating the guard captain will trigger another short cinematic. Once that's finished, you'll have the Stair Key! You can now proceed up to level 2. Before leaving the room, get the treasure chest in the top left of the room for a Magic Water. Then head out via the bottom door, run across the hallway and head up the stairs to floor 2 - but don't forget to save first!

Floor 2 (lv. 7)

This place is a treasure trove. Almost every room has a treasure chest, so go around and start collecting. To the south of the starting room, you come into a long hallway with nine doors, five up top and four on the bottom. The ones you want are all the bottom doors, the top-right-middle door and the top-left-middle door. Once you've got those chests, go through the top-right-far door and head down the hallway you come into to get to the second main area.

This place is almost identical to the last room you were in. You'll want to get all the doors, save the one you just came from, the bottom-left door and the top middle door, starting on the right and ending with the door on the top-left. In that top-left room, there's a butler willing to sell you weapons, armor or items. Sell everything you're not using, then equip your party to the max. Go back out of this room when you're done with the butler and head through that top-middle door I told you to avoid earlier. You'll wind up in a hallway with a room at the end that has a save point and a staircase. Go ahead and save again, then head up to the third floor.

Floor 3 (lv. cool

Ok, you're in the third floor. In the entrance area, there's a door to your left, one to your right and the staircase behind you. Go through the door on your right, then head through to the other end of the hallway you come to. You'll wind up in the throne room, where the Thief will tell you there's probably a secret door somewhere that you'll need to find. There's a save point between the two thrones. Go ahead and save, then run around and get random encounters until you grow to level nine. Then save again and head toward the bottom left of the room. The second tile up from the wall is where the secret door is. You can use it to go through to a secret hallway, at the end of which is the arcane sanctum.

The Arcane Sanctum (lv. 9)

The Arcane Sanctum starts with a short cinematic. Afterward, you find yourself in a maze with no way but forward to go. Head down the path you see until you come to the four-way intersection. Take the left path first, it leads you to a treasure chest that contains an Iron Helm, which you can equip to either the Paladin or the Warrior. Then head right. You'll come to another four-way intersection. Take the Up, Down and Right paths before heading back to the previous intersection and heading down for treasure chests that will contain a Spirit Orb, a Falchion and an Iron Battle Suit. Head through the rooms you come to, collecting all your treasure chests on the way, and then get back to the main Arcane Sanctum map. Before you enter the next room, there's a save point you'll want to take advantage of.

Inside this room, there's a treasure chest, a blue orb and an empty archway. Go over and use the action button on the blue orb, then decide to touch it. The room rumbles a bit, then opens up a white portal beneath the archway. Go to it, decide to go through, and enter the "Secret" area here. There's a book laying at the end of a field of grass. Go activate it, decide to read it and have the Paladin do the reading. The book will ask you a series of questions; the answers are as follow:

The Book
Question 1: Which is most important?
Correct Answer: My Friends

Question 2: Which is most valuable?
Correct Answer: Wisdom

Question 3: Which is the better instrument?
Correct Answer: Neither, this is how you choose the reward you get. Decide on whether you want better magical power of physical power here.

Question 4: Which is the greatest attribute of all?
Correct Answer: IT'S A TRAP! There's a third option with no text. That's the correct answer.

Reward: Based on your choise of question 3, you either get two Mana Up and two Spirit Up or a Life Up, a Strength Up, a Guard Up and an Agility Up.

Answering Wrong: You really don't want to, since answering wrong gets your whole party reduced to 1 HP and sent away with no chance of reward.

Once you're done with the book, go back out and save again. Then head back into the room and head for the north exit. Be prepared for a rather tough boss fight!

Dragon

HP: 6000
MP: 10
Immunity: Fire
Weakness: Ice

This boss is fairly straightforward. When your party members get a bit damaged, use the Paladin to heal them. Pelt away at its hit points with the Thief, the Warrior's Double Attack and the Sorceress's Ice Spell. If any of your party members get dangerously low on HP, have the Sorceress use a potion to heal them for 1,000 HP instead of the regular 500. Watch out for it's flame breath; the ability can cause considerable damage to all party members. This is the first of the actually challenging boss fights in the game, so have fun with it!

Now that the Dragon's gone, head out the north door. Go to the end of the road and speak with the old man there. He'll talk to you about a few things and give you the Tower Key, then allow you to use his green scrying orb to return to the throne room. Before you go back, run around in the Sanctum until every party member is up to level ten. You can also talk to the old man again for a quick tribute to the old PS1 game, Brave Fencer Musashi. Then it's time to get back to the main levels of the castle and get stuff done.

Final Bosses: (lv. 10)

It's time to get to fighting the real bosses. Save in the third floor throne room, then head back to the first floor. Once you're there, save again. Then head out the left side of the room, across the hall and back into that abandoned dining area. There's now a second butler here, who will sell you better, more powerful weapons and armor then his friend upstairs. Equip your party as you see fit, head back to the central room of the first floor and save a third time. Now head back into the room with the salesman, go into the bottom room. Youll be heading into the tower. Make sure you're stocked up with potions and magic water before you proceed.

There's three floors of tower before you fight Ocotto on the fourth. Fight your way through, but make sure to keep your HP and MP high for the fight ahead. Once you get to the fourth floor and watch a short cutscene, it's time to fight!

High Cleric Ocotto

HP: 12000
MP: 1000
Weak: None
Immune: Holy

This is a pretty easy boss fight. As long as you can use the Paladin's Heal power and the Sorceress' potion-enhancing abilities to keep your party's HP up and running, you can defeat Ocotto with little more then the inconvenience of a very long battle.

Now that Ocotto's done, it's time to get General Mordekian. Fight your way back down the tower. Equip your party via the merchant with the gold you've gotten from Ocotto and the fight up and down, head over to the center room and save your game, then head across to the right in the room where you fought the guard captain. The bottom door is now open to you, since Ocotto dropped the spire key. Fight your way up the spire to the fourth floor, where you will fight the final boss of the game!

General Mordekian

HP: 15000
MP: 500
Weak: None
Immune: Incapacitation, Poison, Darkness, Silence, Confusion, Sleep, Paralysis, Stun

General Mordekian is easily the toughest boss you've fought thus far in the game. His attacks do major damage, and he can use dual strike whenever he wants to. Use Paladin to heal the party, and deal damage with Thief's Life Drain and Warrior's Tripple Strike. Use any magic water you have to replenish Warrior's MP when he runs out (And he does so quickly). When his HP gets lower, Mordekian will 'Go For the Heart' and deal enough damage to 1-hit KO your Sorceress or Thief and put Paladin or Warrior on their last legs. When this happens, just have Paladin use Raise and/or have Sorceress use a potion. Make sure you've kept at least three Stimulants in reserve just in case Paladin dies; if your resurrecting agent goes down for good in this fight you're screwed in 3-5 turns, unless Mordekian is nearly dead anyway.

Now that you've defeated General Mordekian, you see a brief cutscene and the screen fades out. Enjoy the ending cinematic, you've earned it!

Tying Up Loose Ends (lv. 11 +)

Now that you've beaten the regular game, it's time to get the secrets! You're going to start by heading back up to the third floor and saving in the throne room. You can talk to Prince Marcus while you're there, too, if you want to get a quick laugh. Now, head out of the throne room via the left path. Follow the carpet to the left and then up all the way. Step one square to the left of the top row of carpet. There's a secret door here that wasn't there before! Make sure your party is well equipped and ready to fight, then head through the secret door.

Undead Creature

HP: 10,000
MP: 1,000
Weak: Blow, Holy
Strong: Slashing
Immune: Darkness

The Undead Creature is another tough fight. It starts off deceptively easy, just trading attacks, but as its HP falls it starts using stronger and stronger attacks. It eventually starts using Darkness, which deals large amounts of damage to your entire party. Of course, use Warrior to deal attacks with Double and Tripple attack, use the Sorceress for her magic spells and the Paladin to heal the party; Don't worry about having him heal Thief, he can regenerate his own HP with Life Drain. With persistence, a skillful manipulation of the party and a lot of healing items, it's only a matter of time before this boss falls... Especially since you saved right before fighting it.

Now that you've defeated the Undead Creature, it's back to the first floor (Don't forget to save on floor 2 as you go!). Once on the first floor, head into either of the five-door rooms to either side of the main area. Remember that top door that didn't do anything last time? Well, you can do stuff with it now! Go to the northern door. You'll find yourself in a large, looping hallway that goes up and above the treasure chests you found in the first leg of the game. In about the middle of the walkway, you'll notice a break in the wall where a ladder leads down. Without the Dungeon Key you got from killing the Undead Creature, it can't be used, but now that you have it, this secret area is open to you!

Descend into the dungeon.

In the first area of the dungeon, you just have to crawl down a long, twisting hallway. At periodic intervals throughout the dungeon crawl, you'll find grating in the north wall. Press the action button in the space just below this grating to find the Warrior, Thief and Sorceress Ultimate Armor Sets. Save at the end of the hallway and head down to the second level of the basement.

Here, you'll discover that the game has a puzzle after all! Yay! Although, it's not a very good one... There are four switches on this level; one of them opens the way down to the third level. However, there are also special items to be found here! Start your crusade for the Ultimate Gear by heading south. There will be a path to your right a ways down that will lead to a switch and a skeleton. You don't want to hit that switch (If you do, you get attacked by monsters), but the Thief can search the corpse to find the Ninja-To, his ultimate weapon! Head back out of that room and continue along your original path. Eventually, the path splits north and south. If you follow the southern path, you'll come to a treasure chest at the end of it. Open it to find the Demon Staff, the Sorceress' final weapon! Now head to the North path and hit the switch there; this opens the way to the third level of the basement. Go back to the central area, but don't head down the rope yet. Instead, head up the Northern path. When the path splits, head West. Surprise! Just before the room with the switch in it, there's another secret door! Going through it leads to a treasure chest that holds the twin swords, the Blades of Elusia, which are the Warrior's ultimate weapons. Now you can go back to the central area and head down the rope to the third floor.

In this place, you have two fights, both of which are bosses. Save your game by the entrance, then head down the hallway. You'll see a monster blocking your way! Talking to it reveals that it doesn't seem hostile, only protective of the shiny, shiny sword suspended in the air behind it. You can try to push on or back off at your own moral preference, but if you want to see the super-secret ending you'll have to go past it. Trying to push on triggers a boss battle!

Overbeast

HP: 5,000
MP: 200

It has low HP and a pathetic attack with no special abilities. Just plunk away at it for a few turns and you're sure to win an easy victory.

Well, that was easy! The monster's out of your way and nothing stands between you and that attractive sword. Go and grab it! It doesn't bite, unless you want it to... It turns out that this sword is the Holy Avenger, Paladin's ultimate weapon! Equip it, then head back up the hallway.

Uh-oh! The creature's back, and this time it looks angry! It starts transforming before your very eyes!

Underbeast

HP: 20,000
MP: 2,000
Strong: None
Weak: None
Immune: All status affects.

The Underbeast is the toughest boss in the game, and the only one that causes status ailments. It uses Poison Breath, Paralysis Breath and Darkness along with a high-powered normal attack. If your party is high-level (Which in this game means 13 or more) it also uses the powerful Breath of the Underbeast, which deals a large amount of damage to all party members and induces Poison, Confusion and Stun. Thank goodness you got that Holy Cross from defeating Chancellor Ocotto to protect one party member from it! Have whomever you choose heal the status affects when this happens and resume the a**-whooping that's been coming to the Underbeast for a century now as soon as this attack occurs. It takes time to beat this boss, and one heck of a lot of healing and status-curing. I hope you brought the proper items with you, he-he.

A short cutscene explains the nature of another feature of Tubbyman Inc. Games: optional side-bosses called Fiends. There will be two of them in World's End and seven in Tales of Elusa after that.

Now that the Underbeast is defeated, dropping Angel Plate and Angel Wing (Paladin's ultimate armor set), go back up to the third floor throne room and talk to King Marcus to see the final, super-secret ending to the game. You've definitely earned it!
