Together. They were finally truly together. To Caelin, they were closer than they had even in their youth. Back then they had been full of innocent affection. Now they knew better and knew each other better. The innocence had been burned off of both of them but it meant they wouldn't be blinded by it. Innocence is what had cost them their chance at being together the first time. The lack of it was what gave them a chance now.
Caelin had gotten much more used to living with Mapiya's herd. It was strange to be around unfamiliar faces and sometimes inconvenient as well. The halfblooded kalona filly in particular. Caelin had gotten over his dislike for her but she posed other problems than her bloodline. He didn't like to admit it to himself for fear that he should seem jealous and clingy... but Adour took up a lot of Mapiya's time. It was hard to find time alone with her and the filly seemed all too happy to make it harder.
Caelin was returning from a run he had taken to stretch his legs. Adour had been with Mapiya when he left and he fervently hoped she might have found alternate amusement by now. He wanted to talk to her, to say the things that were still only half-formed in his mind. He rounded the bend that brought him close and began to look around for her. Hopefully she would be close and alone.

Mapiya sighed contently as she slowly walked through the tall, cool grass of the field near their home. Adour had been unusually clingy lately and while Mapiya loved her with all her heart it was exhausting to be the center of so much energy. A soft chuckle slipped from her as she heard Ador's voice rising in a plantive series of whys and the sound of Momi's whimpers.

When he stepped into the grass he at first didn't notice Mapiya. From a distance the blue of her fur disappeared into the blue of the sky, her white markings like swirls of clouds. The vision faded as he grew closer but the feeling remained. He had always loved the sky just as he had always loved....
He let that thought grow still.
Mapiya was finally alone but now that she was he still couldn't be certain what it was that he felt so driven to tell her. There were so many things that he could think to say but none of them seemed like what he meant and what he felt. He inwardly cursed his lack of verbal skills but called out her name all the same.
"Mapiya!" He broke into a trot to reach her sooner, a soft smile of greeting on his face.

Her ears perked as she turned her head towards his voice a tender smile spreading across her face as he hurried to join her. "I was wondering where you had gotten to love."
It was stunning, how much her voice and eyes warmed just by seeing him. She had never thought she would feel like this about anyone ever again.

What had she just called him? His ears flicked back for a moment of uncertainty. Love. The use of the one small word of endearment was enough to banish the few words that he had prepared from his mind. What was it that he had thought so important to tell her?
He looked at her and their eyes met, warm golden to gray. He recognized the emotions in her eyes. They brought him back to earlier days that had also been spent in grassy fields. It had been the two of them together, just like this time.
"I didn't go far...." His voice trailed off as a slow and unintentional smile spread across his face. Words he had been fumbling for seemed to come unbidden into his mouth while meeting the gaze of those eyes. "I wouldn't.... I couldn't leave you for long." As soon as he said it, Caelin wondered whether it was too dramatic. His nose flushed with embarrassment and he scuffed a hoof over the dirt restlessly. "I mean... Since I'm living with your herd for now I wouldn't wander off again without telling you."

Mapiya smiled at him lovingly, he was just so damn adorable when he got flustered! "Well I hope you wouldn't leave Cae, I am afraid you are rather stuck with me now. You poor poor male." Her tone was teasing as she wrinkled her nose amused.
He might have grown up into a handsome stallion, but she all too often saw the shy bumbling colt she had first loved. Piya chuckled again as she nuzzled his cheek grinning, " Seems we have the afternoon to ourselves love, any ideas?"

Ideas? He had a million ideas of how he would like to spend his time with her but each seemed more fanciful than the last. They chased each other like butterflies through his flustered mind and in the end he gave his head a small shake. "No... I don't."
His voice grew quiet again and full of a simple fondness. "I'd just like to spend time with you. The rest doesn't really matter." He returned her gesture and nuzzled her cheek in return. Even small gestures like those were enough to send his heart to pounding but he resolved himself to pretend otherwise. He had known Mapiya all his life even if they had not been together for all of it. There was no use in shyness when they knew each other this well.

Brilliant gold eyes closed with a soft content sigh as she leaned into his gentle touch. She had felt whole before he had come back into her life, but it still stunned her to realize how alive her heart really was now. Everything was so wonderful and bright.
A mischievous look crossed her face as she grinned "There is something I want to do but you have to promise not to laugh at me. It is rather childish and silly."

Caelin's eyes crinkled with amusement. He had no idea what it was she wanted to do but with her it could be anything. That was one of the things he loved about her. "There is never a dull moment with you, is there?" He drew backwards so that he could look at her more fully.
"What is it? I'll try my best not to laugh." He knew better than to make it a promise. Her ability to make him laugh was another one of the things that had always drawn him to her.... and she wouldn't have given him that preface if it wasn't going to be something humorous.

Piya grinned wickedly," Are you sure you can handle it? I mean it might be too much for your serious nature." She gave him that gruff , stuffy look she always teased him about when he got too serious. At his look she laughed prancing away her tail flagging "I want to play tag."

Caelin couldn't decide whether to laugh or roll his eyes so did both. "Piya...." His smile belied the chiding tone of his voice. "Aren't we a little old for that?" Even as he said it he was beginning to follow. He was not yet going very fast, just enough to keep up with her.
Whatever I came here to say, I do believe she has distracted me from it.... which might not be a bad thing... In movement Mapiya's form was highlighted to it's most beauty. The way the passing air tugged at her mane and tail... the way her patterns shifted as her legs bent and straightened...

She laughed as she danced away from him " Maybe -you- are too old to play with me." Her gold eyes flashed as she grinned staying out of reach. She had loved playing tag with him as a child and the chance to play again was too much to loose.

That remark brought a reproachful snort from Caelin. "We're too close in age for you to be calling me old." He quickened his pace, following closer now behind her steps. The silvered tip of her tail was dancing just barely out of reach now, snapping further away when she turned.
I could see this as a metaphor if I wanted to. Her running away and me just a few steps behind... He pushed those dry words from his mind. No. That isn't it. Even if it is a metaphor, metaphors can be changed. He gave a burst of speed and suddenly that silvered tail was whipping in his face. He managed to n** the end of it and gave an uncharacteristically wide grin around a mouth of hair. "Got you!"

Mapiya squealed with amusement as she turned to n** at him "pull my tail will you?" Chuckled she moved to snuggle against him nuzzling lovingly. "Well I will forgive you this once..." Her gold eyes were bright as she gazed up at him. With a soft little smile she started off towards a private glade twitching her tail at him, maybe...just maybe...they could finally start their own little family.

The wide grin on Caelin's face had softened. Mapiya. Could he even describe her adequately in his mind? No... he could never capture that vivacity, the personality that was at times so confounding but at others so simple and pure.
Some things truly were simple. That was something he had to remember. They were as simple as recognizing an emotion in another or in oneself.
He thought he finally recognized, or at least accepted, the emotion that made his heart pound even though he had stopped running. Though he said nothing while following Mapiya the emotion was there, written in his eyes and the way he looked at her. It was love that made him act like this... and it was a love that he would never allow to himself to give up again.
