you know how most brass instruments have "water" valves?

and there's the icky stuff that you blow out of it.

that most people call water.

well, i say it's spit.

because how would water get into there anyway?

and that's the end of that.

Brass are not the only ones who create puddles. XD

I used to think it was that way until I started playing woodwinds. razz

My bassoon teacher calls it "condensation".

It's not really "spit" confused , but rather condensation created between your warm breath and the cooler instruments. The more tubing, the more water condensing. It's not like we directly spit into it; however, a good 30% is actual spit. But honestly, it's still less than people naively assume.

And that's the end of that...

I agree with Killinkiruto. I've never heard it called a water valve before! blaugh And for that reason I believe it is spit.

Its condensate air seriously. But something that we do with it in my brass class really funny. When we get combined with the woodwinds or the percussion is we will all take out our tuning slides and dump them out in front of all the woodwinds and they all totally freak out its absolutely hilarious to watch them scream.

My music teacher says that it's not spit, it's condensed air, and if there is spit in there, it's because you're spitting in your instrument, and if you are spitting in your instrument, you're gonna get a pen thrown at your head.

You know how your breath "steams" when it's cold out? Well, that's the moisture in your breath.

When you play a brass instrument, the water vapor in your breath condenses on the inside of the horn.

Also, because of how you blow into the mouthpiece, you have some spit that ends up in the horn, too.

So, the liquid that comes out of water keys/spit valves is a mix!

heh no.. i sorta know mine is part water, part spit and part apple juice... xD and some of the spit isn't even mine... lets just say the guy that liked me last year switched my trombone with his... ><
then the apple juice was to gross out the flut players beause they think its gross when we empty our spit valves, so i made sure that all the spit was out, and i washed it through with water and i pour some apple juice in it. so then i emptied a little on the ground and i said to one of the prissiest ones, "well waste not want not" and i put the spit valve over my mouth and drank the apple juice. but she thought it was spit. oh good times goooood times... xD the screams that i got for that one... not by my band teacher lol just by the flutes and clarinets... xD everyone else thought it was hilarious

'Tis both. Some is condensed water vapor, the rest is saliva (which is over 95% water as well). So, 99% water, 1% saliva chemicals/enzymes.

It IS called a spit valve, though it's mostly water. Spit will get in there, though. Yuck :S

It's called a spit valve. They just call it "water" to tone down the 'grossness' level, so that people will play brass.

The "water" is mixed stuff. It's not just condensed water, or just spit, but more like

Spit + Condensed Water + Grease/Oil + Water from lubrication-preservation= "Spit"

How do I know this? I've tased the "Spit" that came out of there (it tasted nasty).

Why would you taste it??? YUK!!
Anyways, its gonna be a mix of spit and manky water vapour. Not the nicest of stuff. There might be a bit of chemicals, but not much really...

PS.. I LOVE your sig!!
