Luke, Logan and Levi

“I’ve changed my mind!” Logan whispered harshly and covered his
face with his covers. Levi and Luke looked at each other. They knew that
they’re brother would try this. He had a habit of backing out when they
were going to do something dangerous.

“Logan!” Levi whispered, pulling back the covers. You don’t have to go,
we can leave you at the park if you like, but we can’t leave you here.”

Suddenly there was a thump from the other room… The boys held they’re
breath in desperate fear. Another thump followed. Levi wrenched the
covers off of his trembling brother and pulled him to his feet. Luke had
already opened the window and gathered Logan’s clothes by the time Levi
was able to pull him to the window. “Climb out now!” Said Levi, almost
silently growling. Logan climbed out slow… he was still in his PJs with no
shoes… but he made it through. The other two boys rushed out after Logan
and they all went sprinting up the street. Only when Logan refused to go
any further without his shoes did they stop.

“I’m sorry.” He said, panting. “It’s just… well… what if we get caught?”

“Getting caught back there would have been a whole hell of a lot worse!”
Mumbled Levi, looking back.

“Come on.” Luke said, leading his brothers down an alley. “You can get
dressed in here.”

“What if there’s a murderer in there?” Logan said, looking around.

“So like what, you want to get dressed in the middle of the street?” Luke
said stubbornly, grabbing Logan’s arm and dragging him into the dark
alley. Levi stayed at the entrance to the alley, watching a couple of cars
glide by and thinking.

“Why don’t we just go to the park and hang out there.” Logan said,
immerging out of the alley. He was wearing the same black boots, black
jeans and black and white striped shirt with a hoodie that the other two
boys were wearing. “Why do we always have to do dangerous things.”

“Because it’s fun!” Luke said.

“Because every day is dangerous for us.” Levi said, glancing at Logan
dreamily. “So what does it matter if we go to jail or even die… isn’t it
better than the alterative?” Logan hopped into Levi’s arms, as he often did.

“Levi?” Logan said, hugging him tight. “Why must we go back? Why must
we always go back?”

“Where else are we supposed to go.” Said Luke, holding Logan from
behind. “At least we have food and shelter from the rain at home. All we
can do is live it up when we’re away.”

“And away we go!” Levi gave Logan a tight squeeze and let him go.
“Come on now… it will be fun after all.”

Logan nodded once and they were off running again. They passed homes
than buildings than huge homes with brick walls that kept intruders out.
Every once in a while they would stop and rest but then they were finally
there. The three triplets stood facing an eight foot chain link fence. Luke
looked around frantically. “Do it already!” He hissed.

Levi walked to the fence slowly. There was a large padlock on the fence…
it wasn’t a master lock. Levi held it in his hands and took out his pick. He
had met a weird guy in the park only two days before. The guy said that
he’d teach Levi how to pick locks if Levi helped him with a job. And so he
did. All he had to do was climb through a vent that was far too small for an
adult male and pick a lock on a jewelry box and steal a ring that the guy’s
x-wife had got in the divorce. Levi slid the pick into the lock and felt
around. It wasn’t that hard once you learned… and Levi spent eight hours
one day and ten hours another day practicing on every lock he could get
his hands on.

“Come on Levi! There’s a car coming!” Hissed Luke.

CLICK

Levi pulled the chain from around the polls and rushed in, his brothers on
his heals. They hid behind some bushes just inside the fence as a red
sports car went by.

“That’s what I want when I get rich!” Said Luke, watching the car drive
away.

Levi walked back to the fence to put the chain back on it so that it wouldn’t
swing open and alert someone that there was an intruder. “I thought that
you wanted a Mustang.” Levi said.

“That was a Mustang.”

“It was a Camero.”

“Mustang.”

“Camero.”

“Guys.” Logan interrupted. “Can’t you two argue later? We’re kinda
standing by a public road, trespassing here.”

“Fine.” Levi said grinning. Luke shoved Levi and ran for the sea. Levi
chased after him laughing. Logan ran after them for a few moments, but
stopped at the top of a sand dune to stare at the ocean. Levi noticed him
first.

“Aren’t you coming?” He shouted.

“Look.” Logan said, pointing at the ocean. The other two boys looked. It
was just after midnight and the moon was full. White moonlight reflected
off of the dashing waves. It struck Levi suddenly why someone would pay
millions for they’re own island… it was for this. It was for the pure joy of
staring at this sea for as long as you liked whenever you liked. And for
that brief second he was in heaven…. Than he heard a splash. Luke was
already in the water!

“Wait!” Shouted Levi. “We’re not in yet!” Levi started striping his clothes
of as such a quick pace that he fell over twice in the attempt to unbuckle
his belt. Logan was nude by the time he reached Levi and the two ran
down to the shore together.

“Holy s**t!!!” Levi shouted seconds after he had jumped head first into the
water. “It’s freezing!” He shouted. He looked for his brother, Logan was
still on the shore, deciding weather or not to hop in.

“RAWR” Shouted Luke, dunking Levi without warning. Levi coughed when
he came up but he was laughing.

“Don’t dunk him.” Logan was saying, but Levi was fighting back by that
time and they both went down. “Levi Levi Levi!!!” Logan said, wading out
to the chest-deep water where his brothers where wrestling.

“What?” Levi said, releasing his grip on his brother.

“Look.” He was pointing up at the cliff opposite to where they had broken
into the private beach. There was a large house surrounded by an oak
porch… and on the porch was a man. Logan clung to Levi, making it hard
for him to keep his head above water. The couldn’t see the man, only his
silhouette but there was no mistake; he was staring right at them. The
man was at least 200 feet away.

“He heard you shouting.” Luke scolded Levi and came closer to his
brothers. They always felt stronger when they were together. The man
didn’t seem to notice Luke’s whispers but he had to know that the boys had
spied him… why wasn’t he yelling at them to leave?

“Let’s go.” Logan said.

“This is the shortest beach trip in history!” Luke said, heading toward the
shore. Levi with Logan attached, began walking slowly toward shore too.

“He doesn’t look angry.” He said to his older brother.

“Look.” Luke said. “If some guys busted unto your private beach you’d be
mad right?

“Yeah.” The air felt colder than the water as the boys came up to
waist-high water.

“Well is there any reason you wouldn’t?”

“Where the hell are you going with this… I’m too cold to deal with your
patronizing attitude!”

“I think he’s a *****!” Luke whispered.

Logan gasped.

“Yeah!” Said Luke, we’ve got to get out of here!”

“No.” Logan said, not taking his eyes off of the silhouetted man. “That guy
just like beckoned to us I think… he did that thing with his hand like he
wants us to come up there!”

“Screw that!” Snapped Levi, pulling his brother with it toward the opposite
side of the shore as the house and the silhouetted man.

“But… but he wants us to come up!” Said Logan.

“What???” Shouted Luke, a little too loud.

“Are you insane?” Hissed Levi.

Levi and Luke grabbed Logan by his arms and practically carried him up to
the gate… all the while the silhouetted man did nothing to stop them. They
had grabbed they’re clothes on the way and through them on behind the
bushes.

“What the hell was that Logan?” Growled Luke.

“What?”

“Didn’t you hear us talking?” Said Levi, trying to get Logan’s attention, who
was still glancing back toward that house that was now out of sight. “Logan!”

“What.” His brother looked at him finally.

“Why do you want to go to that house?”

“Cuz of that man.” Logan said simply.

“That guy’s just a *****!” Luke said, trying to put Logan’s shoes on
him.

“Yeah but he wanted us to come up.” Both of Logan’s brothers stared at
him.

“Yeah sure he’s a ***** and he wants to rape us but hay since he
wants us to come into his house, where there is no escape, I guess we
should just go!” Levi said sarcastically.

“Is that wrong?”

Luke was speechless, and just stared at Logan open-mouthed.

“Logan.” Levi said slowly. “We’re not going into that house, now or ever!
In fact, we can’t come back to this beach. It’s too dangerous!”

“No. You don’t understand.”

“Put on your hoodie Logan, we’re going home.”

“But what about -”

“NO LOGAN!” Shouted Luke, finally getting his voice back. “We’re not
going back to that place!!!”

“But-”

“NO! Now stop being dumb.” Logan hung his head and would say no more.

Levi put his arm around his brother and they made they’re way home
slowly. “He’s only trying to protect you.” Levi whispered to Logan along
the way, but Logan only nodded.

The house was silent when the boys came into the back yard. They sat for
several minutes waiting outside they’re window. They had to make sure.
Luke’s anger had wore off and he just looked tired now. Levi kept his
arm around Logan almost as much for his own stability as for his brother’s.
Logan would have walked right into that house without a second thought.
Logan sat there… isolated. He wasn’t even pouting… it was more like he
didn’t care anymore. Levi had never known a time when his brother would
not snuggle with him, but here he was shying away from him. Levi
scooted closer and put both of his arms around his brother, but there was
no response.

“I think it’s safe.” Luke whispered and went in through the window first; he
always went first. When there was no sound from inside Levi knew it was
safe and brought his other brother to his feet. By the time they were both
inside, Luke was already asleep on his bed, fully clothed. Logan and Levi
got into they’re pajamas silently and snuggled into they’re separate beds.

Levi laid silently, staring up at the ceiling and listened to his brothers’
breathing. Levi had never known a time when Logan would not cuddle with
him. After all, it wasn’t him who called Logan dumb. Levi would never call
Logan dumb. He wasn’t after all, but there was something about him. He
didn’t always catch things the first time around and it was like sometimes
he didn’t think as fast as most people… but he wasn’t dumb. He was
smart… he got good grades and liked to read… he was certainly not dumb.
Levi felt his bed bounce up and down slightly as Logan climbed into his
bed with him. The two held each other close.

“I don’t know if he was a *****.” Logan whispered.

“What?” Levi said, as quite as he could.

“That man on the porch.”

“Oh.”

“He just wanted us to come and talk to him.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah… he said that he wanted to ask us about our father.”

Levi pushed Logan away just enough to look into his face. “What do you
mean he said?”

“He told me… but it was in my mind… like telepathic or something.”

Levi stared as his brother.

“I’m tried.” Logan said, cuddling into Levi’s chest once again.

For a long time Levi tried to figure out what the hell Logan was talking
about, but in the end he conceded and just held him close.

‘It’s a wonderful feeling,’ Levi thought to himself, ‘when no matter how hard
life gets, you know there will always be someone there to hold you.’
