User Image It was just another day for him, or at least seemed like it would. He had shrugged himself away from the tree upon which he had leaned the night before and shook his muscles and wings free of tension. The next move was to go and quench his thirst down at the river which ran with relatively tame force through his self-proclaimed territory. After this was done, he would consider wandering farther up stream to see if he could at least catch a glimpse of his old family in their own daily routine. As little a role as he often played in their lives, he still couldn't bring himself to do anything less than worry often about their well being.

Perhaps that was why he never sidled away from this riverside. He could barely recall the time whereupon he had been an adventurous soul making his way through the world, so long ago it had been. He had fallen into a mundane routine now of sorts, though the realization had not yet reached him. As far as he was concerned, he was obligated to stay here, though the relationship between he and his family was an awkward one indeed. He wasn't expecting to do any more than he normally did today, for the day was clear.

The winged male stopped before the river, considering his reflection for a moment. He had sap in his mane from the tree, apparently. Snorfling a soft and short version of a chuckle, he began to lower his head towards the river.

The weather had warmed considerably from the cooler days that he had become used to and his dark coat made being in the sun for too long rather uncomfortable. That being the case his first agenda of the afternoon was to find a nice stream to splash around in and, from there, a comfortable spot of shade to stay in until the sun started to set. Maybe if he was lucky there would be a storm tonight... Something to watch and listen to as the rain cooled down the heat of the day.

As luck would have it he found the water he was searching for, a grin curving his muzzle as he moved into it, picking up his legs high to splash some of the water up onto his chest. "Haha!"

The sound of splashing down-river caught his ears, but Forrest didn't bother to look at first. It could be some fish, he reasoned, as their jumping was not an uncommon thing at least in this part. He didn't think fish laughed, though, and not so triumphantly. As he drunk at the water before him, his yellow gaze stared down the way in hopes of catching signs of the source. Hardly anyone came around these parts. While it should be considered more or less his territory, Forrest had left no warning marks to signal it.

Seeing nothing right away, the striped stallion dipped his muzzle into the water and tossed some back onto the rest of his head. Perhaps it would loosen some of the sap still in his short mane. Now that his thirst was quenched, he straightened up again and decided he had time to go investigate the noise. If he had company, coherent and intelligible company, he was going to take some advantage of it.

After trotting some short length alongside the river, the Wind ducked his head beneath an overhanging tree branch and saw finally the noisemaker. It was another stallion, dark in color, enjoying the cool flowing waters of the river. Forrest's wings ruffled pleasantly at the sight, seeing no immediate telltale signs of meanness on the other such as scars or horns. He might not have been out in a while, but he knew the dangers of a Kalona, especially to one such as him.

"Ho, traveler!" He hailed the other, staying a respectful distance apart for them both. "I'd be careful. The shallows drop off quite quickly- you may be in for a nasty surprise if you don't pay attention to your footing." His advice, however, was good-natured, just like everything else in his moments seemed to be.

"Life can toss a lot of nasty surprises at us... But worrying about nasty surprises won't really get us any enjoyment, will it?" He smirked, turning his head towards the other stallion. "The water is cool and the air is thick... I think I'll take my chances with the possible dangers of the river this time." His smirk turned into a grin as he gave his head a toss. "What about you? Not afraid to get your feathers wet, are you?"

It was clear in the way he spoke that childhood hadn't been left far behind him. He still had the vigor and determination of youth and, if he was lucky, he would have it for some time to come now. Nothing had stopped him from getting out and enjoying the world as it was meant to be enjoyed and lived in.

Well, that was certainly a different way of taking of taking a cautionary quip. It wasn't all that important, though, he reasoned. So long as the other male knew how to swim and didn't go into shock at suddenly being fully dunked in cold water. This part of the river was so small that, well, the current wouldn't really be a danger to someone the stranger's size. Again, if he could swim.

"Not at all," Forrest would reply, and just to prove it took a few steps into the water, collecting it around his knees. "I've lived here practically my whole life. It wouldn't really pay to be water-shy, would it?" He was amused by the other so far, that air of invincibility he sported. He seemed quite interesting. "I'm guessing the river hasn't been the first danger you've come across, then?"

"You never know." He smirked, giving his head a light toss before looking back to the other male. "You might live here for the convenience of having a source of water to drink... Not because you enjoy splashing around when things heat up."

He paused for a moment, thinking on the second question that the winged one had asked. "Depends on how you define 'danger', I suppose. Lots of things in life could kill you... Leaping over logs, running through the forest at night, bolting across the open plains during a storm to test just how much faster than lightening you are. Doubt my mother would approve all that much of that one... But it's yet to stop me." He grinned.

"I guess that's true," He conceded, but clearly it wasn't the case this time. Striped wings unfurled themselves slowly and let themselves droop toward the water where their tips could stir it.

"Sounds like you lead the most daring of lives, my friend," Forrest actually gave a small laugh at the other's final words, the sound warm and deep from his belly. "I must envy your spirit. But as much as your words pain me, I'm glad that you're here for the moment. There's plenty more river to be had, so I don't see a friendly soul as often as I'd like. Even fewer seem to have a tale like you."

"Why envy it? Haven't got an adventuring soul within yourself?" His brow lofted slightly as he took a few steps towards the other stallion. "Life's too short to spend all of the time in it wondering about the what-ifs, isn't it? At least, that's what I've always heard... What is life if you aren't going to life it to the full extent of everything that you can?"

"At one time, I think so." Forrest would reply quietly, a little alarmed as the other suddenly approached. However, he stayed in his spot, doubting the other wanted anything more than to speak closer to him. At the further barrage of questions, the more vibrant of the two hesitated before deciding that he really had nothing to hide. "I can't. There is no place out there for me. I am not as young as you anymore, and I forgot how to act it. Look at you- there is no responsibility to your name from what I can see, whatever your name is... Everything I need is right here."
PostPosted: Mon Jun 23, 2008 2:21 pm

"Can't? No place out there for you?" He snorted, shaking his head slowly. "Zaniel. My name is Zaniel... And although you might not be as young as I am you certainly don't look as old as those who have come before me. Even my father, who has had two sets of foals now grown to adults, can still keep up with my mother who has never been more spirited. Do you think that, maybe, you could relearn the things that you once forgot? Or have you given up on trying?"
