Tokyopop's line up includes many titles from around the globe, so does it really matter where your manga or anime comes from?

i dont care if it is made in Korea or China, but i do notice the difference if it is made anywhere else, even in the philippines, it just seems watered down somehow.
the only western versions i like are done in France. i wonder why?

There are slight differences due to the differences of the storyteller''s culture. We all have different beliefs, and that comes out in everything we do.

I go by whether or not I like the story. It doesn't matter if the story is from Japan, Korea, America, England, or whereverl. When I'm interested, I'm interested.

The only thing that bugs me about the different comics from around the world they aquire is how they put them out. I don't really like how they call all comics 'manga'. I know manga is the Japanese word for comic, but from working in a comic store I've learned that if you use manhwa (sp?) for Korean comics, manga for Japanese comics, comics for American/English comics, and so on, your customers can distiguish between the different types better. Also, most Japanese manga fans tend to pick up anything you call 'manga', so I feel it's false advertising.

Doesn't matter to me at all. I have Japanese manga, Koreean manwah, and American-made manga in my collection, and I like most of it equally. (My American is Rising Stars of Manga and some of the stuff in it, I don't particularly care for...)

I think it's really about personal preference most of the mangas I read come for Japan but there are also a few that I read that are made in America. For example when I go looking to buy mangas I prefer the Japanese version over the Chinese even though it the same story.

Most of the anime or manga I've read/watched was from Japan, but I've read some Korean too. Oh, and some really neat German works. ^^ To me, it doesn't matter where it comes from, as long as the storyline is interesting. ^^

For me, a comic book, or any form of entertainment for that matter, does not have to be made in certain countries for me to like it. If the story and art of a comic book are good, then I will like it no matter what. biggrin

I don't care at all. I like a good story. I do have a friend that won't touch anything that is not from an asian country, and he prefer's japanese manga and anime. I'm not huge on his taist of anime/manga though. He's defently in the the one male and many girl's pawing over the guy in skimpy clothes. ^_^; The only manga I really like that he likes also is Sayuki.

Yes and no. The only reason I care is that most professional (as well as some unprofessional) translations include localization edits that go beyond the typical discrepancies that cannot be avoided. My native language is English, second Japanese, so if it was originally made in either, I would strongly prefer the original version. There are great artists and writers all over the world, where they are from may bring about small cultural influences, but that does not mean everything from one country is similar or that works from one country are automatically superior to works from another.
I'll admit that I'm curious about some of the Korean works Tokyopop has licensed, but given their track record with other series, I do not trust that I would be getting a fair and accurate translation, so I have not picked any up. If I purchase anything Tokyopop has published, it will be something originally written in English (or one of their DVDs that includes the original language track).

Saying you won't take manga because it's from a particular country is like saying you won't buy a water colour painting because of that same reason...It's too broad to make any sense. Story is HUGE in manga and then next is art...If I like both perfect, if there is amazing story I'll be fine with art which isn't necessarily to my tastes...No story no buy...Those are my rules. Plus I'm from North America and I'd like to one day perhaps have my own manga published...So it would be a huge bummer if people didn't want it because of where I'm from... xp

I personally only buy Japanese manga, and yes, I suppose you could say it's because the manga is from Japan, but I don't do it to be prejudice or anything stupid like that. I like to study Japanese culture and there are certain manga, such as titles like Hot Gimmick, which clue in a lot more to the cultural aspects of life in Japan. I read only the Japanese manga because it's truest to the Japanese lifestyle and it helps me better understand the culture I study. That, and I simply prefer the artistry and stories better than those of other countries... which is probably due, again, to the cultural bits. xd
