Mireille grew up in an upper middle-class family: not rich by any means, but certainly well off enough that she wanted for very little. As a child, her parents constantly regaled her with how smart she was, how pretty she was, how talented she was. As a teenager, she was left with conflicting messages. Her parents still considered her bright and capable and beautiful, but things she read, shows she watched on television... everything else said that she was little more than average, not dumb by any means but not the genius her parents seemed to think. For years, she tried to sort herself out, not really even understanding just why she was uncomfortable and unhappy. Things came to a head when she entered university. She had no real desire to continue her education at that point, but she'd been so conditioned by her parents and society that she literally had no words to explain why it didn't feel right. She let herself get distracted and began failing classes before finally simply choosing not to go to them. Eventually, when she'd convinced herself that there was nothing she could really do, she withdrew from university altogether, and trudged back home to live with her parents as she sorted herself out.
Within a few weeks of being back at home, she met back up with Thomas. She'd gone to school with him, had been best friends with him, but had also lost touch with him when she left for university. Where she'd failed, Thomas had succeeded at school, moving up on the fast track until he'd finished his own school a year early, and had already found a job. They began to spend time together, and slowly came to realize that while they'd been friends before, now things were shifting to something deeper. They were married a year later, and settled down into a decent life together. Thomas made enough money for them to live comfortably, and Mireille began to work on her own options. With Thomas' blessing, she finally decided to try her hand at writing a book, and for two years, worked and slaved over the story. She got it written, cleaned it up, and eventually began to submit it to publishers. Eventually, her book got picked up by Daffodil Books, a small publishing firm located in the nearby city. The night she got the news, she and Thomas went out to celebrate. They had dinner out, went dancing, and enjoyed themselves... and on the way home, their car was hit by a drunk driver who'd lost control. Much of the night is still a blur for Mireille, even now, but she distinctly remembers being trapped in the car, and terrified, and seeing Thomas carefully climb out of the wreckage and cut her free of her seatbelt, pulling her out and resting her gently on the roadside. She remembers that he looked whole and clean, slightly brighter than his surroundings, as though he were standing in light. When she came to in the hospital days later, she was told the truth: her husband had been killed on impact, his body mangled beyond recovery.
Mireille went back home after that, but held herself distant from family and friends, caught up in her grief. She stayed that way for almost a year before tragedy struck yet again, this time taking her parents from her. Their deaths nearly destroyed her. After months of ragged, painful depression, Mireille attempted suicide. Left almost completely alone in the world, she almost succeeded, but for the agent representing her books. He found her near death and contacted the hospital. She spent nearly a year undergoing treatments and dragging herself out of that pit, eventually moving to her current city. The move itself helped the most. She boxed up her parents' and Thomas' belongings and stored them away, living in a nearly spartan home as she gave herself a fresh start. Her agent, Robin Donkin, became a dear friend, and she pushed herself to continue writing. Mireille's life is funded by the combined life insurances of her parents and Thomas, leaving her with more than enough for a comfortable life and the ability to continue her writing without having to push herself to get a day job. But it's an empty life, the loneliness broken only by her get-togethers with Robin.
Mireille is a quiet sort of woman, not unfriendly but shy. Much of the time, there's an air of sadness about her, but it's a faint thing. She's finally moved on from the tragedy and pain that struck her life, and is pushing herself to begin really living again. With Robin's guidance, she writes a series of young adult fantasy books called The Silver Trifecta that has sold decently. It's never hit the top ten list, but it comfortably pads her income from Thomas and her parents, leaving her wanting for very little. She's finally gotten herself back together, and is ready to tackle the one thing that money can't buy... the ability to share her life with someone again.

Robin Donkin is the agent representing Mireille's books, and a dear friend. He got to know her when she first hired him prior to her books getting picked up, and became a friend both of herself and her husband Thomas. On Thomas' death, Robin stepped in to try to be a support for Mireille, not giving up on her or letting her give up on herself. Though she's told him incredible, unbelievable stories of what happened the night of the crash, Robin's never offered any hint that he doesn't believe her.
Since then, Robin's been there for her at every major turning-point in her life: her parents' death, her attempted suicide and subsequent hospitalization, her move... the works. He pushed just enough to keep her from withdrawing completely, and has, as a result, become her closest friend.
Robin is a bachelor with no particular interest in changing that aspect of his life. Despite his regular get-togethers with Mireille, he has no interest in her romantically. They are friends - real, solid, forever best friends.

Lighting Prompt (Required to reach Lit Scent stage) You have just purchased an oil burner and a specific scented oil from the Solace Scents shop and you can't wait to light it! Now that you're home, it's time to find the perfect place to light that scent! However, strange things seem to happen when you do... particularly with the smoke...
