(I must be totally obsessed with Final Fantasy VII to research all of this crap.) I think I may have found out where Square came up with the name Sephiroth!

The word "Sephiroth" can be traced to a religious origin (just like most things from Final Fantasy)- that of Jewish Kabbalah. There is a diagram that features heavily in Kabbalistic reference, referred to as the Tree of Life. It is a diagram showing several spherical shapes, linked together with lines. Each sphere has it's own attributes and meaning, and each is referred to as a "sephirot" (or "sefirot").

I don't know if this picture will show up or not, but here is the diagram:

It's called The Tree of Life or Systema Sephirotica.

The plural of the word "sephirot" is that of our villain. Yep, that's right, the plural is indeed "Sephiroth". I think the reason Square chose this for the main villian's name is because The Tree of Life is supposed to depict "ten divine paths", or the ten creative forces that are between the infinite God, and our created world. It is, by definition, humanity's process of returning to divinty, along the path shown.

Considering that Sephiroth's ambition during the game is to become divine, to rule over the world of Final Fantasy VII as a God, this is a very appropriate name for our villain.

Wow. . . That does sound about right. That is a lot of information to research on the origin of Sephiroth's name. I don't have that much time on my hands but it's interesting none the less.

Yeah, it was pretty simple. Once you link him to Kabbalah (and I got this from an image search, lol), it's pretty much downhill from there.

Wow...FF games are educational, in a sense, with all those mythological, cultural, and mysticism reference. Stupid people don't realize it though, which sucks. The origin of Sephiroth's name makes sense, by the way.

EDIT: Jenova is an allusion (not to be confused with illusion) to Jehova, one of the other names for God.

I totally understand what is being said. I have studied that diagram and what it all means. And the name Sephiroth does come from that diagram so nothing seems to false behind all of this research awesome job.

Hmm, yes, I have heard that before, about both Sephiroth and Jenova. I also read a rant somewhere about how FFVII is copying the bible or something...it was really weird and I think the people were reading way to far into it.
