Ok, so some of the older members may know I had fish and I had a 10 gallon. Well those fishies died and I put away the aquarium.
So, while I was in college and just got back home my brother won a common comet (aka feeder) from a carnival. While he was taking the 10gal out it fell...and broke. So now the little Comet is staying in a 6 by 3 in rectanular container until we can work up the money to buy another tank.
I KNOW FISH ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE IN A BOWL BUT THIS IS TEMPORARLY!!!!
So here comes the question is going to be about a week before my brother and I can work up the money to buy another tank.
How often should we change the water? How much of the old water should I retain?

Regardless of the size of the bowl, I would change half of the water every day and feed the fish very sparingly for the week he was going to be occupying the bowl.
Normally fish can stop eating for a week and be fine, but since the fish probably didn't have a very good diet before you acquired it, it's best to continue feeding it just a little every day. Once in the morning or afternoon will be fine I think.
I hope this helps, and I hope the fish does fine until you can get him a bigger house! (:
Also, sorry for such a late response, it's a little slow in this guild.

...if you have a common, or commit. you are going to need at least.. well.. a pond.im sure this thread is old, and the fish dead, but still. even a fancy goldie would not do well in a 10g for any amount of time (this is not a flame, just informing)
