I somewhat doubt this, I honestly think that if it were possible some would have already hacked the 40GB to allow it to play PS2 games.
The thing is they haven't had any luck actually hacking the PS3 yet. It's a different story from the PSP. The SDK hasn't been leaked, so they don't have what they need to run homebrew on the system even with the few exploits they've found. And something tells me Sony would be able to program an emulator of their own hardware a lot better than hackers would be able to. They have the man power, and know the insides and out of the system.
It's a rumor I know, but I'm still willing to bet on it. Maybe not exactly October, but before 2009.

Yeah...there's always those few games that have issues.
EDIT: And something that supports my claim about Sony being able to make a better emulator than the homebrew community could is the PSP.
Homebrew was available for the PSP for a long while but the only PS1 emulator they were able to develop was one that could only play a few games (and not very far, severe graphical issues made them pretty much unplayable), and the fps rate was horrible to go along with the graphical issues.
But it wasn't long before Sony released an emulator that was perfect. It had no problems with any PS1 games. Hackers unlocked the emulator with a custom firmware to where you could just back up your PS1 games and put them on the memory stick to play. No problems whatsoever. It's not 100% compatible, but it's in the high 90s.
The homebrew community didn't make the emulator, Sony did (but only intended it to be used for the games bought of PSN...but of course the hackers couldn't resist unlocking it). They know their hardware and software a lot better than any hacker does, so they have the upper hand when it comes to programming emulators. Plus, there is a lot more man power too.
