Kavu kept himself as low to the ground as possible, trying to aid the tall grass in its task to hide his bright coat. It had always been difficult for him, trying to hunt with the element of surprise, when you stood out like a beacon of color on the muted savanna.
He was downwind from the heard of wildebeest, however, and that offered him a pivotal advantage. Green eyes that were usually so lazy in their movements, flickered back and forth quickly as he watched the herd. His usually relaxed muscles were tensed up from the task of keeping him so close to the ground.
Hunting was an art, to be sure. One had to factor in their own timing, movements, the movement of the herd...
Kavu sighed softly, his eyes rolling slightly. He wished once again, that wildebeest would just suddenly drop dead the moment someone gave an inkling to eat them.

An orange and black form, speckled in white, crouched low in the grass. Zeus' own form wasn't exactly natural, but at least he didn't stand out as much as the purple lion on the other side of the herd they both crept up on.
Large paws were placed with surprising care, moving almost daintily for such a big male. His stomach grumbled to him, reminding himself he hadn't eaten in far too long... This place might be rather isolated, but the herds were used to him now, and wary.
When the moment seemed best, he lept into action. Being upwind, it had been a challenge to get as close as he had... but there was really no other choice. The herd bawled in fear as it began to surge away from him, the one he'd targeted limping a little as it struggled to keep up... but despite that, it was getting too close for his liking. If he didn't catch up soon...
The powerful body surged, putting on speed to try and overtake the limping beast.

Kavu had been prepared to surge forward, his muscles and mind ready for the chase. He held his gaze directly on the one with the limp, trusting his peripheral vision to notify of him of an odd movement from the herd.
Instead, however, as he leaped into a run, he saw a black and orange lion emerge from the grass on the other side of the herd. Surprised, Kavu stumbled for a moment before recovering quickly. The herd must have masked the male's scent.
Kavu watched as the oddly-colored male went after the same wildebeest as he. This, he wasn't surprised at. The limping one was the easiest target. The herd was moving quickly though, and there was a chance the male wouldn't be fast enough.
Without really thinking, Kavu kept moving, changing his path so to head the wildebeest closer to the other male. With two of them working, they should be able to take the limper down easily.

A flash of purple snagged in Zeus's vision, but his had eyes only for the prey beast that dashed only a long jump from his pounding paws. He was so close... just a little farther!
With a roar, the orange male gathered himself, thick muscles bunching, and launched his body into the air. He hit the fleeing prey beast like a charging rhino, the slender legs buckling, snapping like twigs under his weight. It was a suprisingly pleasurable thing, even the jarring he got when they crashed into the ground. They slid a few feet as dust rose in a cloud, further hiding the purple male he had yet to notice.
Sharp fangs bit down on tender throat and fragile spine, bone crunching as blood spurted into his mouth. Fantastic... a quick, clean kill, and enough food here to distend his stomach if he gulped down enough of it. Growling happily, he disengaged his fangs from the corpse, licking them clean as he rumbled happily.

Kavu felt a brief flash of triumph as the other lion took the animal down. It faded quickly however, as rational thought returned and the adrenaline began to subside. It wasn't his kill, and he had only helped slightly. The other male may not wish to share the meal.
He turned his head and the herd as it faded into the horizon. He wouldn't be able to catch up now. He'd have to find his own meal elsewhere. His green gaze turned back to the other lion. Well, nothing to lose! He trotted over.
"An impressive kill," he said simply and waited to see where it would go from here.

Surprise made Zeus start as another male suddenly appeared and approached his kill. Instinctively, he crouched his large form protectively over the carcass, head low and fangs bared. Truly, he hadn't known anyone else was about and he was quite ready to defend his meal from a thief if need be. With his imposing size, it was rare that anyone tried anything of the sort, so the expression faded quickly as he blinked at the newcomer.
"Oh, Ah... thank you. It really was easier than it looked, mostly a matter of luck and things falling into place at the right time." He said modestly, offering a bit of a smile as he sized up the purple male. Since he wasn't a pretty lioness, he really wasn't of much interest or use to the orange male, but he graciously decided to play nice, even if he was getting a bit too close to his kill.
"What brings you out here, ...friend?" Zeus said as he sat back, still sitting possessively close to his kill. The 'friend' part was said after a small pause, since he really had no idea what the guy's name was.

Kavu sighed as he saw the large lion instinctively crouch over his kill. He must not know of Kavu's help in the hunt. That would mean another hunt for a meal later on. Disappointing, yes, but not much he could do. He couldn't very well contest the other lion for the kill. Kavu detested fights, and avoided them save for when absolutely necessary.
In any case, at the very least Kavu might get some conversation and perhaps some direction to where he currently was. The purple male was in unfamiliar territory and could use some knowledge of the area.
He sat a polite distance away, erring on the side of caution. "Looking for dinner, like you," he answered casually.
"I find I'm not familiar with this area. It's too bad I didn't manage to snag one of those wildebeest before they ran off. I'm Kavu, by the way."

Needing to do something while he conversed, Zeus licked at his paw to clean the blood from it, using it to rub it from his face as well. As the adrenaline slowly drained from him, he began to feel the tiredness that came with the strenuous hunt, though it was a good feeling. It did make him more inclined to be courteous, at the least, and his postured eased, less possessive now and more open.
"Ah, were you?" The thought struck him and his smile curved in apology. "I didn't chaise away your prospects with my kill, did I? You'll have to forgive me, I didn't realize there were others here hunting as I was. I only saw the prey before me." He shrugged off the situation with a bit of a joke, hoping to lighten the mood a little.
He seized on the chance to converse more, lifting his head in greeting. "My name is Zeus and I'm afraid I'm as much of a traveler as you are. I don't know this area either, it was my good luck to find this herd. I was really just wandering and happened here by chance."

Zeus's attempt to lighten the mood worked. Kavu relaxed and smiled, grateful for the apology. He certainly hadn't expected one, so it was a welcome surprise.
"Ah, it's no trouble. I'm sure I'll manage to find something later. This area seems to be pretty ideal for grazing."
He glanced about him for a moment as if to confirm his words. The flat land was interrupted here and there with small hills and patches of tall grass. He'd be able to find a few hares at the very least. He turned his attention back to the other lion and tried not to focus on the tasty looking carcass sitting a few feet in front of him.
"It's good to meet you, Zeus."
He meant it. He enjoyed the life of a wanderer, for he had no commitments to worry about. But it was nice once in a while to have a conversation.
"So, do you wander with a purpose? Or just wherever it takes you?"
The question was posed casually. Kavu simply wanted conversation and if the question was too personal, the large lion didn't need to answer it.

"No, no! Stay, share this kill with me." Zeus felt expansive after the successful hunt. Truly, he couldn't eat all of it by himself and after the shock, that herd was long gone now. It'd be hard for the new comer to find food now, for at least a couple hours while the prey settled down. Leaning back, he gestured to the food, putting on a friendly smile to encourage Kavu to join him.
"You'll have a hard time finding anything for a while, after that ruckus I stirred up with my kill, and there is more than enough here for the pair of us." Licking his jaws, the speckled male flicked his ears forward as he thought about his answer. "No, no real purpose. I really just wander wherever I feel the want to travel. Sometimes there is not even a gut feeling, though other times its because I'm chasing a pretty piece of tail. He laughed as he raised his brows, offering Kavu to join him in laughing at the joke.
"There's a lot to see in this wide world and many females to chaise after. I've yet to find a place that can hold me for long." Much as Kavu longed for company, so did Zeus on occasion, though he tended to lean towards female company.

Kavu was intensely relieved when Zeus offered to share the kill. He had no qualms about sharing a meal, and it had been getting harder and harder to stand there staring at it as his stomach rumbled. It had been distracting him quite a bit from the conversation.
He laughed sincerely at the joke. He had chased a few pretty tails in his time. Probably not as much as this fellow, but definitely a few. After sharing in the joke, he shifted back in the conversation.
"Thank you! It's very generous of you to share your kill. And I understand your reasons for wandering. I do so for mostly the same reasons, myself."
With that, he helped himself to a portion of the food, his stomach exceedingly grateful.

The pair ate in companionable silence for a bit, filled with the sounds of flesh being ripped and devoured. It wasn't uncommon for bachelor lions to share a meal, and since there was enough meat here for both, Zeus really didn't mind it. Even enjoyed the companionship.
After a while, he sighed and licked his jaws, his eager eating slowing down to allow him to talk a little since his mouth wasn't perpetually full. At least they wouldn't have to worry about anyone stealing the kill... few would dare to take it from two large male lions.
"Are you well traveled then, Kavu?" He said as he licked his jaws clean before going in for another scrap. "I can't even remember just how far I've gone, I've been doing it for so long. Places tend to blur together after a while, especially when you don't stay for long in one place."
