Hey guys. o 3o~ I was just wondering if you could help me. I know there was already a topic about this, but I just thought I should make my own topic. (( _._ Sorry if I busted a rule~. )) I'm 14 years old and I'm in the 7th grade moving onto 8th. I have failed a grade because of many, many rent-paying-issues with my parents and failed when I was little. ( Life story moment over. XD ) But, anyway. I have one more year left before I enter Highschool, I live in Oklahoma and I really want to study for a month or maybe even a year in Japan.. ( When I enter Highschool. X3 ) I really want a detailed post about this one, because from the other topic I was not getting all the answers I needed. So, here goes!

* What is required for the program?
* GPA? DDD:
* When does the GPA count?
* ANY THINGS I SHOULD KNOW BEFORE GETTING ON A SCARY PLANE FOR 14 HOURS?
* Any other things you would like the add or advice you would want to give me would be sooo nice.

Oh and..

* Rules? What you can't and can do while down there?

By the way. I'm looking at AFS right now! XD

There's a lot of different programs to choose from, by using google you can find a lot. But watch out, there's a lot of scams and rip off programs that just take your money, and dump you in a foreign country. A few of the best programs are;
AFS (I put this at the top for various reasons)
*You need to be at least 15 years of age at the time of departure (for the year program, you leave in the winter/early spring)
*GPA isn't directly involved, but if you have ever taken any language classes, not just Japanese, high grades in those classes could not hurt. They just want to see if you're serious or not.
*GPA often shows the program how hard you can work at something, but if you have average or mediocre grades, I'm not sure how that'd count.
*AFS has year round support, with a Japanese person in the area that checks up on you regularly to see how you're doing. If you have issues with your host family, they help work it out. They don't pressure you that much for JLPT test scores, as some other programs do.
* You also require at least a basic knowledge of Japanese, so just take an online course that gives you certification if you can't find any in your area. I'm using AFS, it's a good program.
AS for rules, no drinking, driving, drugs, staying overnight with people who aren't your host family(you'll need special permission), and getting pregnant is automatic termination. ^_^
There's a lot of others to choose from, YFU, Intrax, AYUSA, and a lot else, but I can't personally vouch for any of those. One of my friends from Belgium came to Japan on YFU because you don't need any previous knowledge of Japanese, but she had a rough time because she didn't understand anything.
*Before you get on a freaking 13 hour plane ride to a foreign country, really think about your reasons. If a person is thinking along the lines of, "Oh, I'll escape to a foreign country from my life of problems, learn the language, and when I come back everyone will think I'm so cool! I'll get to buy kimonos/manga/cosplay stuff! It'll be awesome!" They should rethink your reasons a little. You shouldn't be going to a foreign country for escape/break from your old life, because when you have rough times there, you'll just feel like you made a big mistake.
Whoah.. I wrote too much.
Any questions about afs, you can PM me.
