Personality
Ryu is more serious than he is playful due to his position as a Clan Head. Because of this position of power he trains twice as much as he once did and leaves little time for leisurly activities. Of course, he does have emotions. However they are shoved aside from the public eye so that he may function as what he is trained to be. A weapon.
History
Ryu was born into a fatherless home to a woman by the name of Narumi Kuriji. Narumi, a Chuunin of Konohagakure, was married to Sekou Kuriji, of Kirigakure. The Kuriji Clan of Kirigakure is a long revered family for its brutality in battle due to their inhuman strength, chakra capacity, and all over fighting prowess. However, this family has rules that govern every aspect of the member's lives. Who they will marry, where they will live, occupation, etc. Sekou, one of the most skilled shinobi of his clan and village, disagreed greatly but did not show it outwardly.
While on the way back from a mission to Konohagakure at the age of nineteen, Sekou Kuriji and his squad fell under attack from Waterfall ninja. Sekou stayed to fight while the others fled back to the Kirigakure. He killed all of the attackers, but was severly wounded and had little chakra left. He was about to die when Narumi Saito, age seventeen, came to his rescue. Young Narumi was out gathering medicinal herbs for the hospital when she came across the man that was so close to death. Being a medical shinobi, she healed what she could to prolong his life, hefted him onter her shoulders, and carried him back to Konohagakure.
She reached the hospital in time to get him to surgery, and not a second to spare. It took fifteen hours of surgery and two weeks in intensive care before he was able to even move himself. After another week he had enough strength to speak. His first words were heard by the nurse that was feeding him that day. "Where is the one that saved me. I'd like to thank him personally." They didn't understand why someone of another village wanted to see a person that they would probably never see again, but they complied to his request and sent for Narumi.
Narumi was only two floors down so it didn't take long for her to arrive. When Sekou was told that she was the one that saved him, he couldn't belive it (The Kuriji were highly sexist. A woman was only there for reproduction, raising children, and house chores). After that, she came to see him every day, even though no words were spoken.
Eventually the man opened up to her and, after his wounds healed, he came to live at her father's house. He did small jobs in her father's smithy until he was ready to go on missions again. Within two year's time the two were to be wed. Two weeks later, Narumi was pregnant.
While out on a mission for his new home of Konohagakure, Sekou was ran into his former squad-mates. He felt that it wouldn't be a problem to exchange what's happened for the past few years so he went to greet them. Little did he know, he was put onto the Missing Shinobi list of Kirigakure and was a top priority, wanted dead. The two attacked but were quickly disposed of by the Konoha Shinobi that were accompnying Sekou.
While he was out on this mission, his son was born.
The two had already decided on his name. He was to be called Ryusansuke, after Narumi's father.
After the attack, Sekou sent word to his wife through his squadmates. He was setting out to roam the lands and to keep his own family safe from the Mist shinobi.
Now that this part of the background is covered, you will understand Ryu a bit better.
Ryu started at the academy just like any other student. He passed through with average marks and had few friends. He was always sad because, out his his class, he was the only one without a father. It showed in his actions, words, and his class work. But every time class let out a smile that couldn't be his came to his face. Everyday after class he found his mother waiting on him right outside the academy doors. From there they walked home. It stayed this way until his mother knew he could fend for himself for a few days. When that time came she began going on overnight missions and the such. Fortunatly, Ryu knew, understood, and was comfortable with this situation.
At the age of ten, the students were having a taijutsu exam. Ryu won without much opposition. Since he normally, and purposfully, didn't perform to his potential the other students and the teacher were baffled. His opponent, however, was humiliated. The moment Ryu turned to exit the battle circle his defeated opponent lunged at him and cut a deep gash into his lower back. Ryu turned and dealt a flying elbow to his jaw, breaking it, and was about to do more before he was grabbed by the Chuunin instructor and rushed to the hospital. It took a week to get him out. When his mother arrived to find him out of the house, she was terrified. She thought the Kuriji had gotten to her son. Fortunatly, letter was left telling her where he was. This is the story behind his scar. He graduated from the academy the following year.
At the age of fifteen, he learned the ninjutsu native to his clan. However, he didn't know it's origin. As time went on he shaped it and made it his own.
It wasn't long after that his mother was murdered by Mist Shinobi while on a search and rescue mission. He was torn apart and didn't know what to do. Her last gift to him was her sword, forged by Ryu's late grandfather who worked as Konohagakure's blacksmith.
