What is aether?

Discuss...
PostPosted: Thu Jun 05, 2008 7:17 am

lol, did i by any chance spark this by mentioning it the other day?

as i said before, the aether i use in my inventions, is either in liquid form, used to power things such as aether oscillators, and normally a blue topaz colour, similar to what is in the vial on the end of my oscillator:

or also i see it as sometimes being similar to electricity, a bit like those plasma discs and globes you get, of course being blue too.

Nice oscillator you have there; what particular purpose does it serve/in what manner does it function?

Aye, that you did. wink

Think the Doctor's sonic screwdriver and you're not far off

that one was made from some scrap bits.

i plan on adding a light to the top, and also one to light up the vial of aether.

may add sound but trying to figure out how.

you see the last 2 episodes of the new series? the sonic screwdriver in them was rather lovely

also i bought myself the masters laser screwdriver, rather lovely as it is without mods

If I recall my somewhat hazy days in Academia arightly, aether is the medium by which electro-alchemical impulses are relayed over supra-linear distances...but I admit I was a rather lax pupil and that I could be amiss. Please put me to rights if my answer is incorrect.

I would also like to know what Aether is, but I like to think of it as some sort of liquid, superconductive chemical, whose one of it's most famous uses is to power what is known as the Aethernet.

Aether can mean in a alchemical context a catalyst for alchemy
In magic and some religion mainly wiccan, aether means spirit that combines the classical elements togeather

Yeah, but what is it in steampunk lingo? I mean...we got the Aethernet, which has nothing to do with wiccan or spirits or anything.

I know, I just hear aether is also some thing seperating planes of existence
Aether in a steampunk world for me usually means alchemy or something

I'm inclined to connect it with electricity. The very power of lightning, the Element of the Gods.

Then again, if you take into effect the four elements - Fire, Air, Water, Earth - you realize that lightning could work very well in the element of Fire. Which still leaves Aether a mystery, as it is the Fifth Element. The Quintessence.

Alchemists describe the four elements with the following properties:
Fire - hot, dry
Air - hot, wet
Water - cold, wet
Earth - cold, dry

The quintessence, however, encapsulates all of these. It is a strange paradox, being cold but hot, wet but dry. It is not merely the Fifth Element, but Element Zero: That from which all elements are made, and that which the other elements can, presumably, make again. The Hindus call it Akasha.

Aether is the element the heavens are built upon, and, if you ask me, it is the philosopher's stone. Or at least plays an integral part in creating it.

Then again, some might say it's part of a much simpler, scientific level. The void through which light passes, or even light itself.

And at that point, the lightning thing isn't too far off, eh?

Aether is what Victorian scientists thought space was made of. They needed to explain how light could travel through space, and so decided that space contained a form of matter called "aether". It has long since been disproved and is now an anachronistic term, perfect for steampunk nomenclature because it involves both space and Victorians.

As for status as an element, I'm pretty sure alchemy was obsolete before the Victorian's time. Thank you, Robert Boyle.

History! aside, in a steampunk context I would use it to describe outer space.
