I think Steamboy is a very good introduction to steampunk (how I used it with some of my friends!). It's also possibly one of my favourite films, certainly my favourite animated film.

The animation is possibly the best thing abotu it. Even if you hate the movie (shocking!), then you cannot begin to call yourself Steampunk if you fail to apreciate the wonder that is all the machinery in that film.
Oh my God its full of Gears!

Rulin' ya universes... >.>;; I confess I haven't seen it yet... we were going to watch it in Japanese class but everyone else wanted to see Porco Rosso. Honestly, what kind of a person chooses a flying pig over Steampunk?
Does anyone care to tell me the basic jist of the film?
...since 1992.

I enjoyed Steamboy very much. Another great steampunk anime is the Nadia of the Mysterious Seas (aka Secret of Blue Water) which is loosely based on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (taken to the extreme).
Studio Ghibli's Laputa: the Castle in the Sky also has a steampunk feel to it.

I have never seen Steamboy, so I suppose I must check it out! However, last night, I watched Howl's Moving Castle for the first time. It is currently my favorite movie. Love it. Perfect Fantasteampunk.

Howl's Moving Castle is great. It's quite different from the original English novel by Diana Wyne Jones however. No steampunk in the book. Just magic everywhere and a door to... another world.
