Familiar Adoption
Familiars are little companions for your SandPainters, usually of the magic variety.
How does a SandPainter get a Familiar? Well, mainly you just ask for one. Eggs cannot have Familiars (Though there are acceptions, such as the Owl), so you must wait for they Hatch to buy them one as a protector. And some Familiars require Sandpainters to be in later stages of their aging to take care of, be cause they are far too wild otherwise.
Sandpainters can also own up to three familiars! However, the combonation you choose decides how many you get -- A Large Familiar, such as an Ent or Coyote, counts as two Familiars, since the larger familiars are often harder to handle. Where as Smaller familiars are easier to train and take care of so you can have Three of them.
Prices for Common Companions Default color and Pattern: 2k Artists choice of Color, default pattern: 3k Buyers choice of color, with default pattern: 5k Choosing colors and suggesting Patterns for artist interpretation: 10k Minor Line edits, Additions, or additional control over customization (minor things like adding a butterfly or a necklace): +40k More complex line edits or additions (Removing a limb, altering fur types, adding complex costumes/frills/alterations etc): +100k and higher
This price is added to the price of the Sandpainter. If you do not ask for it at the time of the adoption of its companion painter, there is a 1k Re-Certing Fee.
Want to buy one? Send a PM to Sandpaints and send in the following

Key: Egg Safe! = Familiars of the Egg Safe Rating are safe for any stage of development, easy to care for, and will treat their Sandpainter Companions as their children Not Egg Safe: age Rating = The familiar is too wild or difficult to allow around unhatched Sandpainters, and depending on their Age Rating they will not be able to be given to sandpainters until the sandpainter is old enough to not be overpowered by them. Limitations = if a breed of sandpainter cannot have this particular familiar, or if only one kind can have it this will state the what and Why In Stock = How many are in stock at this moment.
Small Familiars
Dire Owl Spirit Egg Safe! Limitations:None - Dire owl Spiritss are supernatural and can work with Merdracs
The Dire Owl Spirit is swift, silent, and eerie. However, As with many of the familiars they are a loyal and wise companion, protective of the young. Many Sandpainters leave Owls to protect their young while they are still eggs, the owl treating them as if they are their own and bringing them scraps of food, an extra bit of insurance that, should something happen to them, they will not starve.
Unlike many familiars, Dire Owls are unable to speak anything but their own tongue. However, they are telepathic, able to send and recieve thoughts from their bonded. Unlike their feral relatives, intellegent enough to understand most languages and are capable of complex thought.
bearded dragon Egg Safe! Limitations:Not Merdrac Safe
Bearded Dragon is the common name for any agamid lizard in the genus Pogona.
Bearded Dragons are popular pets, and are also affectionately called "Beardies" by those who breed or raise them. They are a popular breed among children, because of their friendly and calm nature, along with the relative ease of caring for them.
They are common sight in the Western Desert, if you know where to look. Their colorization helps them blend into the desert sands. Bearded Dragons are omnivorous, requiring both insects and vegetable food. A typical diet for captive Bearded Dragons includes leafy greens and vegetables, and regular meals of feeder insects.
Feral Pixie Not Egg Safe: Teen Limitations: Non Aquatic - Not Merdrac safe
Mischievious tricksters does not even begin to cover the Feral Pixie, their cries ranging from high screeches to raspy scritchy clicking and huffing. Unlike their higher state relatives, they are not very intelegent. However they are extremely wild and require to be trained by more mature Sandpainters to be managable. However, with training (So they will stop tearing everything apart) they make a very useful familiar.Until they are trained to do so, however, they are often kept in enchanted cages.
Being creatures of nearly pure magic they eat energy, thus requiring no mouths; Another reason why they must be cared for by older Sandpainters, since Eggs and hatchlings are succeptable to being fed upon and dangerously weakened.
They are popular with alchemists, since they can find and gather the best magical supplies for them, and many magic casters.
Thankfully, most of the Feral Pixies sold as familiars are hand raised from birth by the Elders and so have already grown to being useful. However, some Sandpainters prefer raising their own.
 Raven Egg Safe! Limitations: Non-Aquatic
Ravens are inteligent creatures that can learn to speak outloud, though its usually better to have the familiar master charm them for thought-speak between master and servant, since it helps them learn language faster to communicate to others, and is much easier to give and get commands. The added inteligence boost from they receive from it is also quite useful.
They are larger then the usual raven, being slightly bigger then the Dire Owl. They tend to be nosey and will take things appart, and horders of shiney objects.
Vibrant Mimicgryph Egg Safe! Limitations: Non-Aquatic
Vibrant Mimicgryphs are nector/fruit eating mock-grypon -- more of a four legged bird then part other animal. They, like parrots and lyrebirds, have the ability to learn languages and many different sounds. While inteligent enough to communicate and follow commands, they aren't very good at communicating since they tend to mix languages. They may speak a mix of English, Spanish, tiger, and violin all in one sentence. Because of this most people who get these vibrant birds tend to be give them a logic boost so they know to use the language used by those they are speaking to.
They tend to be skilled weavers as well, building intricate and giant community nests, but tend to use the skills in captivity to make baskets. They are prized by those who are crafters because of this ability, and study of the Mimicgryph weavings is said to be how Sandpainters learned to weave baskets.
Greater Spotted Chureep Not Egg Safe: Hatchling Limitations: Non-Aquatic
Chureeps are common, giant rodents with prehensile, tuffed tails and long back legs, developed to aide their preferred mode of transportation: hopping. They have nubby arms, and their already tiny digits are slowly shrinking due to their tendency to favor the use of their tail. They come in many coats and colors, and can be found practically anywhere on land.
Rockhopper Gryffin Egg Safe! Limitations: None
Rockhopper Gryffin's live on the northern coastline and around Crater Lake. They are freiendly fish eatters and, while unable to fly, graceful swimmers. And quite cuddly.
To keep one as a pet, its suggested you either live close to water where preditors such as seals and camin do not hang around, or build a pool into your dwelling.
Trained Mice Not Egg Safe: Hatchling Limitations: None
Two, two, two Familiars for the price of one! These small mice make adorable pets, and are highly trainable. They are Magically enhanced to be able to survive in any environement, and to have both advanced thought and speaking capabilities. The aquatic mice tend to look a little... Different.
They are already skilled in several abilities at the time of purchase: Sewing, cobbling, complex electrical wiring for dwellings.... Well, some are skilled at that already. Others never come back and make the walls smell of BBQ. Still haven't figured out what they are doing back there. We think they may be forming there own society based around cooked meat...
Large Familiars
Coyote Spirit Not Egg Safe: Hatchling Limitations:None - Coyote Spirits are supernatural and can work with Merdracs
The Coyote spirit is a wanderer, glutton, thief, cheat, outlaw, clown, and survivor, but most of all a cunning trickster. They are one of the more wild familiars you can find but they can also be the most loyal and heart warming if you treat them well.
Though they are highly intelligent they do not speak any English around people, or their Painters. They communicating to each other with howls, yelps and barking,..though some claim to hear a few words mixed in with it. They do not have much in the ways of magical powers. They rely on their sharp and cunning mind to get what they need. One ability they do have is the ability to walk through walls allowing them to play even more tricks with out leaving evidence they were even there.
The Coyote Spirit does seem to, somehow, always be there when their owners need them, as long as the owners are close to the earth. How they are able to travel so fast is a mystery, since they seem to simply vanish when you are no longer paying attention to them.
Longhair Chimaeve Not Egg Safe: Teen Limitations: Non-aquatic
The Longhair Chimaeve is from the colder parts of the Crater Mountains, where P'an-Lun tend to live. They travel in packs ranging in size from three to ten and tend to swap members when they cross pathes, promoting genetic diversity.
Members of the Chimaeve have the intelligence and lingustic skills of a five-year-old human.
Marine Chimaeve Not Egg Safe: Teen Limitations:None
Marine Chimaeves tend to hang out around Merdrac reefs, as well as coasts and rivers, though there are a handful that live in Crater Lake. They are an aquatice mammal, but are amphibious in locomotion.
Members of the Chimaeve have the intelligence and lingustic skills of a five-year-old human.

Exotic and Imported Familiars
Not all Familiars are easy to get. Some are dangerous and rare, and some simply are not native to the Island of Hal'ia and require effort to bring in or tame. Because of this they have a limited supply and thus are slightly more expensive.
Base Pricing for Exotic and Imported familiars and their default colors and patternes is figured out on an individual basis.
Artists choice of Color, default pattern: +3k Buyers choice of color, with default pattern: +5k Choosing colors and suggesting fur markings for artist interpretation: +10k Minor Line edits, Additions, or additional control over customization (minor things like adding a butterfly or a necklace): +40k More complex line edits or additions (Removing a limb, altering fur types, adding complex costumes/frills/alterations etc): +100k and higher
Sandy Burrowing Monkey SIZE: small Not Egg Safe-- teen Limitations: Not Merdrac compatable In Stock: 8/10 Base Price: 3k
The Sandy Burrowing monkey is a native of the scrub brush forest and Western Grasslands, just as comfortable in the trees as it is underground. They usually create tunnel systems much like Meerkats throughout the sandy patches around the edge of the forest, and should any ground based danger come along skitter up into the trees.
This odd adaptation is believed to be the result of how many winged preditors there are that are comfortable hunting within the branches and bushes of the scrubbrush forest. In order to survive the monkey's had to either move across the grasslands into the jungles of sleep, or adapt.
They are highly social creatures, and live in large families. Removing infants from their families is highly inhumane, so only naturally orphaned Burrowing Monkeys are available for adoption.
Gwee SIZE: small Egg Safe! Limitations: Not Merdrac compatable In Stock: 19/20 Base Price: 1k
The Gwee is from a universe known as "Gaia", and despite having been from a "collectable" from several years ago, are still rather common. Because of this, an occational shipment is sent through a Crystal Portal in the deep cavern systems for Sandpainters to give the little pygmy dragons a home.
Red Panda Size: Small Not Egg Safe: Hatchlings Limitations:Not Merdrac Safe In Stock: 10/10 Base Price: 7k
The Red Panda and the Pygmy 'giant' panda are both native to the bamboo forest where the P'an Lun Civilization resides. The Red Panda, known also as a "Shining/Fire cat". They are Specialized Bamboo eatters, but also eat berries, fruit, mushrooms, roots, acorns, lichen, grasses, and they are known to supplement their diet with young birds, fish, eggs, small rodents, and insects.
The Red Pandas of Hal'ia are highly affectionate, but can only communicate in twitters and whistles. They dont follow commands, but make for popular pets because of how adorable they are.
Pygmy 'giant' Panda Size: Small Egg Safe! Limitations:Not Merdrac Safe In Stock: 10/10 Base Price:6k
The Red Panda and the Pygmy 'giant' panda are both native to the bamboo forest where the P'an Lun Civilization resides.
The Pygmy 'Giant' Panda is barely any larger then its Red Cousin, but looks much like the Giant Panda's of other Contries, but much better at breeding and Surviving. However, they are very timid creatures, and tend to be solitary creatures. They are a lot more docile then their Larger versions, who only appear docile. They are not able to communicate.
Kappa Size: small Not Egg Safe: Teens Limitations:None! In Stock: 15/15 Base Price: 4k
Kappa are child-sized Amphibious ambush preditors with bowl-shaped indentations on their heads and a love of Cubcumbers. Feeding Kappa Cukes make them docile and decent pets for those large enough to handle them. They are not very smart, but have the reasoning skills of a two year old and are able to communicate with rough, simplistic words.
Training Kappa to be tame enough to serve takes a lot of time, and is dangerous as well. Because of this they are an uncommon pet.
Kasa Obake Size: small Egg Safe! Limitations:Not Merdrac Safe: Made of paper In Stock: 5/5 Base Price: 15k
Kasa Obake, are a type of Tsukumogami, a form of Japanese Spirit that originate from objects reaching their 100th year of existence, thus becoming animate. Karakasa in particular are Spirits of Parasols (umbrellas) that reach the century milestone
They are playful spirits, but the ones selected as familiars are double checked to be safe.
Grassland Unicorn SIZE: small Not Egg Safe - Teen Limitations: Not Merdrac compatable In Stock: 7/10 Base Price: 3k
Grassland Unicorns are a rare species and difficult to find, despite the knowledge that they live in the Grasslands, and they are very difficult creature to tame. They are solitary creatures in the wild, and have to be hand raised to be sociable. Tamed Grassland unicorns tend to be something of a lap pet as light boned and barely even leaving any marks where they step. They are herbavores and one of the fastest creatures on land. They are only able to communicate with a thought-speak charm, which raises their inteligence level as well as allows painters to communicate with them.

Chupacabra SIZE: Large Not Egg Safe - Adult Limitations: None In Stock: 5/5 Base Price: 10k
El Chupacabra is the decendent of a low-level, vampiric and animalistic demon that somehow managed to escape its master long enough to sire a litter of Semi-demonic puppies (with the aide of a stray dog in what was, at the time, a sparcely populated section of Puerto Rico). Over time these creatures have bred and evolved into what is now the Chupacabra. However, because of increasing population, Chupacabra began to attack livestock and have been come to be seen as monsters.
Through the Crystal Portal in the Deep underground of Sandpainter Canyon's cavern system, the Familiar Master has managed to start importing these... Interesting... Creatures as familiars for those who are interested. Thankfully, except for a small, personal breeding stock of Chupacabra, these now tame and affectionate creatures are spayed as to keep them from mixing in with the rest of the familiar - And Sandpainter - population. They have minor shapeshifting abilities (starved, mangy goat and dog forms, and shadowy whisps) and turn to whisps when dead -- which is why humans haven't been able to capture them as easily as the familiar master's scouts. Also, being demonic in their ancestory, while they need to eat, they do NOT need to breathe; which is how they can travel off the island and arrive anywhere from the united states to even Russia when food is too scarce. They can speak out loud in soft, raspy voices with lisps, but prefer to communicate telepathically because their mental voices are clear.
CooCoon Fairy SIZE: small Egg Safe! Limitations: Not Merdrac compatable In Stock: 15/15 Base Price: 6k When Purchasing, please specify Which Coocoon Fairy you are purchasing, since you only get one per purchase
A small, intelegent species that looks a lot like the fairies from the Evolving Item called the "CooCoon", hense where they get their name. Whether these playful creatures are from the world of Gaia, Hal'ia, or some other world connected to both, is unknown.
However, they all seem to be new to the surface of Hal'ia and are willing to hire themselves off as indentured servants or staff to larger painters for food, shelter, and protection.
Special Effect Familiars
Special Effect Familiars are a rare site and often more expensive to the rights for a dwelling, but these mystical creatures affect your sandpainter in strange ways. They take months to track down, and years to tame, if it is even possible to do so. And the Bonding spell to attach them to their Sandpainter is much more expensive then the usual because of their properties.
Base Pricing for Special Effect familiars and their default colors and patternes is figured out on an individual basis.
Kokopelli Sand Spirit SIZE: Large Not Egg Safe: Adult Limitations:None In Stock: 2/7 Base Price: 80k
SPECIAL EFFECT: Increae fertility (aka times you can breed) to your Sandpainter 6-11 (instead of 5 times, you can have the chance to breed 11 times, though may only gain 1 extra breeding if fate decides against you). It also increases the range of eggs from 2-3 to 2-4
The Familiar Master Waves his hand as he chants from the scroll, invoking the ancient rites of the fertility spirit, standing before a rough painting of the creature set out on the ground, the low rumbles of his voice echoing over the cavern as he ran his hand through the painting, lifting a handful of sand and letting it fall slowly from his knarled fingers. The Master then takes up carefully dyed and selected jars of sand, smashing them on the ground as flapping his wings, the chanting growing louder. A swirl forms in the sands, and with the soft sound of a wooden flute, a Kokopelli danced before him, born from the sands.
Kokopelli, a strange spirit that is more art then biology, created of sand and either wind or water. First, Wooden jars are carved out and polished from found wood in the desert, dried by nature for years and painted lovingly, and a strip of hand woven cloth tied around its middle.
Then, sand is carefully dyed with the colors selected by their new owner, chanted over and given energy as they dry, then added to the small wooden jars.
On the day of the summoning, the new owner has to create a sandpainting of their new Kokopelli, a silloette of the dancing figure, in the colors and patterns they desire, a time consuming practice that often prompts their new owners to go with the classic design.
Finally, the ceremony is performed, the Sandpainter recieving blessings and a smear of sand and paste over their brow and cheeks, as well as across their middle, and the Kokopelli is summoned as shown above, or by washing the painting over with water, the being forming out of the Sand, wood, and cloth. They are now bonded with the Sandpainter with a warm glow and gifting them with fertility.
This process takes months to prepair; hunting for the wood, weaving the cloth, making the dyes, bleaching the sand, carving the jars. Because of this rare honor, the Kokopelli is a symbol of honor given only to a select few.
Mythic Ember Salamander SIZE: Small Egg Safe Limitations:Non Aquatic - Not Merdrac safe In Stock: 15/20 Base Price: 2k
SPECIAL EFFECT: Any offspring from a sandpainter that owns a salamander will skip the egg stage and will arrive as a Hatchling
The Ember Salamander is a facinating creature, born of a fire built by its Sandpainter guardian or the guardian of an orphaned Egg, a ceremony done yet again under the guidance of the Familiar Master.
Despite their firey manes, they are only very warm to the touch, and will often coil over the belly's of pregnant mothers or around eggs, speeding the hatching process. They also like to hang onto their owners.

Seasonal Familiars Sometimes Familiars come and go, available only around certain times of the year. During those times, they are in unlimited stock, but only on certain dates. Once those dates pass, they will no longer be available until its that time of the year once more. Timing is crucial: For some species, it can be available for months. For others, just a few days.
Base Pricing for Seasonal familiars and their default colors and patterns is figured out on an individual basis.
Artists choice of Color, default pattern: +3k Buyers choice of color, with default pattern: +5k Choosing colors and suggesting fur markings for artist interpretation: +10k Minor Line edits, Additions, or additional control over customization (minor things like adding a butterfly or a necklace): +20k More complex line edits or additions (Removing a limb, altering fur types, adding complex costumes/frills/alterations etc): +40k and higher Arched CatSIZE: small Egg Safe!Limitations: Not Merdrac compatable Timeperiod: Available oct 1st - nov 1st Base Price: 3k Arched cats are called such because of their unusual stance -- for some reason they are constantly arched and seamingly aggrivated and angry. In reality, they are as diverse in personality and temperment as any other cat.
Why they had developed such body language is unknown, but for some reason these cats tend to appear around Halloween, and vanish quickly after the holiday has passed.
Wind CaribouSIZE: small Egg Safe!Limitations: Not Merdrac compatable Timeperiod: Available Dec 1st - Jan 5th Base Price: 3k red nose free option
Wind Caribou migrate down to Hal'ia early in December, and migrate further south to another island around early January, before heading north again following the high winds and traveling directly towards one of the distant northern contenents for the spring and summer.
Legends say a Spirit travels in an enchanted sleigh pulled by these migrating creatures, made invisible by their their bell like voices, which ring through the air as they travel. This spirit only can be seen by those that truly believe in them, and often gets mistaken for another, elven creature that travels using a different type of flying reindeer.

Retired Familiars These Familiars are no longer available to the public due to either lack of public interest or were simply too hard to keep as a Special effect painter or, simply, a very limited edition familiar. Ent (Sentient Enchanted Tree)Not Egg Safe: HatchlingLimitations:Non Aquatic - Not Merdrac safe
Sentient tree's such as the ents are long lived, slow in movement but wise in mind. They make good caretakers to young children and loyal protectors, though because of how color blind and nearsited they are they wouldn't be able to tell an egg from a rock, and so are not safe to keep around unborn Sandpainters, since they might "Clean away the dangeous obstruction" and chuck your egg off the edge of a cliff
Because of this, most Sandpainters prefer keeping their Ents outside, where they are happier anyway.
Ents are good at a lot of things, such as growing forest mushrooms and caring for smaller familiars. Corn BabySIZE: Small Egg SafeLimitations:Non Aquatic - Not Merdrac safe
SPECIAL EFFECT: Increases Basic egg count 3-6 per breeding. So instead of 2-3 eggs in a breeding, you get 3 automatically and can get up to six.
We are not sure where these creatures come from, though they always arrive in the summer, clutching ears of corn and giving them to pregnant mothers or young men. Sometimes they appear to the Familiar Master and they and their magicly enhanced corn turn to stone until given to hopeful pairs hoping to have a large family. If the bond is good, they come back to life and will follow them around, faithful companions to the end. They seem to be something of an offshoot species of the Kokopelli.
Corn babies can speak, though some prefer not to. They're not especially bright, so those that do speak may babble or chatter about things that don't make sense.
