i got a routine, and its awesome.
but the director says i (and the other girl trying out) need to learn leadership skills.
ive never been the leader of anything before! (neither has she)
i dont know what to do.
also, the director obviously favors her.

and i want to make captain so bad, its unreal!!

well to figure out leadership skills it's just really you need to make decisions for what's best for the group but being at good listening... either way good luck and have fun. smile

I definately feel your pain. I really wanted to be captain this year too. But for one thing, our new director doesn't "like dealing with captains" and I also am unable to go to band camp this year, so they're already making a huge exception for me. But for me, I would say that leadership skills are less about being a leader, and more about leading by example. Make sure that you yourself follow all the rules. Don't talk in block and stuff, respect your director, so on and so forth. Plus, don't try too hard. Just do what you do best and things will happen if they're meant to happen. But good luck.

Personally, I think that the ability to clap a steady tempo is the most important quality a guard captain can have. After that, technical skills like spinning and marching (especially including a solid, consistent 8-to-5 step so you can check people's drill spots as needed). Third, is the leadership skills. If you aren't too shy, those can develop over time. I'd say that, in an audition, demonstrating leadership skills is partly about knowing the calls/commands and partly about demonstrating people skills. It's right to tell someone off if they do something stupid, but if they're doing their work wrong, you need to solve the problem, not criticize it. If you've taught a routine to someone and they aren't quite getting it, try teaching a different way - you can show them, describe movements/hand positions/checkpoints in detail, or even physically move them (when they're holding each checkpoint for you, not while they're spinning). Different people learn in different ways - to get the routine learned and cleaned most efficiently and with the least stress, some will need repetition and some will need you to be a bit creative in your teaching. When it's right, don't forget to tell them that it's better (I hesitate to suggest you tell them it's good becuase some guards will take that as a reason to stop working but you have to know your girls to make that call).

I'd say a lot of it has to do with maturity.
You have to be mature enough to know when it's time to play, and when it's time to work.
Also, the maturity to respect everybody regardless of whether you like them or not. Especially your superiors.

With that comes the acceptance of your responsibilities and willingness to cooperate with everyone on the guard and marching band.

I tried out for captain this year because our coach chose rather than our band director. Even though this is only my second marching season, I was chosen, so I think my coach's decision was based on mental maturity and how well we were respected by the rest of the guard rather than experience.

Just be willing to help people out whenever they need it, for guard or personal issues (although drama should stay away from practice time), and even if you hate somebody's guts, don't show it and treat them with the same respect as you do everybody else.

The director should be able to recognize if the rest of the guard respects you, which is really important. If they respect you, than if you are chosen as captain, it will be an easier transition as less people will be jealous to the point of hating you.
