Hey all, If you've read my intro post then you'll probably have figured that I own a Alfa Romeo. I'm very proud of that fact and strangely fenatical about the brand. I mean who on earth would recomend a Alfa to a friend, I know I wouldn't.
I can say I've been working on the car more than I've been driving it.
But there's just something about this car, that is magic. The itallians just know how to do it.
A man by the name of Giorgetto Giugiaro who was a the time working for Bertone Design studios was responcible for the Alfa Romeo Gulia.
My fourty four year old Alfa started life as a Sprint GT (Veloce), with a 1500cc motor. Someware along the line she picked up the name Bella, and a naughty twin cam, 2L motor, with two twin delorto side draft carbarators, and a bad attitude. At the time the cars came out they where a marvel of technology, and still somewhat affordable. In the 1960s if you wanted a car with disk brakes all round, a twin cam motor and a five speed transmission, your options where limited at best. Certainly in South Africa, they would kick a** for the next twenty years.

My Alfa Romeo Sprint GT veloce. My father and I bought the car as a project car towards the end of last year. And have slowly started to get it up to scratch. At the moment its sitting in our drive way waiting for the weather to clear up. We've just had the 8v twin cam head serviced and that should go on realitively soon. Small Listfind a set of small air filters to fit onto the carbs, and to get new carb rubbers, then have the thirsty buggers serviced. Get all the electrics working properly Get gauges working Neaten up interior
Small ListSend the car off to have all the brake lines and such re-done and have the brakes done properly. Get new hoses and pipes for the whole motor Fix the suspension Sort out the clutch Get the car roadworthy.
Unfortunately/Fortunately whoever did the conversion work, neglected to change the rear gears. As a result even grandma can pass me in fifth gear. But the flip side is this car pulls like a ******** also did a rubbish job on the clutch conversion, something I'll need to have looked at soon. My wish list includes a Limited Slip Diff, GTAm Replica wheels and a fast road suspension kit. Edit: NEW LIST Engine: Fuel Lines Clean repair and inspectfuel pump tank.Clean repair and inspect New Petrol Fill up Carbs Clean repair and inspectNew Intake manifold. (should I get a manifold for one side draft, or two) Radiator, flush , inspect Engine Mounts
Transmission: Gearbox, inspect for leaks, refill new oil. 80w90 Diff: Inspect leaks, inspect for play.
Interior: More to come...

delSOLdier nardi steering wheel? love the style! we didnt get any of the cool alfas here...just the spider Um not sure who manufactured my steering wheel. But I do like it. SpeedmanRC now that's pimp! great car, see if it will go agents a Datsun farlady 2000, the old school verts, I still want to get one and put a SR20 in it. If my car was mint there wouldn't be much competition. At the moment it might be a good race. xp Update: Bought a pair of K&N filters for the carbs. Its a cheaper, more basic solution than getting the origional Alfa Romeo air cleaner set up wich hooks up to the carbs, goes over the top of the motor and hooks up to a cylinder shaped air box on the other side of the engine bay. Who knows when the intake manifold, carbs and aircleaners are going back onto the motor. I'm waiting for the next available bit of money to replace the rubber carb mounts, as the current ones have worn and torn from a lack of support wich the origional aircleaner set up provides. We've also then got to come up with a plan of supporting the carbarators, otherwise they'll just rip again. Which will suck. (excuse the pun). There are aluminum alternatives but they're ten times the price, and I'm not really willing to spend that much on a negligble power gain, especially when there are other things that need fixing.

Once you get that thing fixed up, that'll be a sweet ride. Definitely unique, if nothing else.

well today, we finally got around to do a bit of work on the motor. Though that didn't really last long, to be honest not much progress has been made. We lost a bit down into the engine mad , so the sump has come off and we're going to try and fish it out. rolleyes Once thats all sorted out, we will be hooking up the timing chain, putting the radiator back in, bolting the exaust manifold back on, fitting the air intake carbs and air cleaners.
Either way, I thought I'd just pose a question to all of you. Would ram air pipes improve performance or not, and if so how would they do that?
The filters I have, can accomidate short ram air pipes inside the air cleaner. Is it worth getting a set of four, or won't I really need them?

now just think that the top one has a big flat around it, and the incoming air will bounce off the flat part[back of air cleaner like the part mounted to carb] and then be redirected into carb bottom with velocity stack will speed up air entering carb so you get a nice smooth flow of air.

Stacks are definitely worth it. But try to get the ones you can cut down, and get two sets. Set 1 for testing, set 2 for final application. The thing is that the trumpet length will need to be tuned somewhat, so you do need a way to go backwards if you cut set 1 too short.

List of stuff to do in the new years:
(1) Take the intake manifold in to have a new bit of aluminium welded on. (2) Put in split pins, and fasten down tapet cover. (3) Find olio cap, or get new one. got new one gonk (4) Put sump back on and bung some new oil into the motor. (5) Put radiator and what what back onto the car (6) Get the car running. blaugh
(7) Take the car to Italsud to get her tuned up, and quoted up. ( cool Drive the car to Carsport Holland to get her quoted up and then if the price is right get some major stuff done.
((I'll scratch them all off as I do them.))

Okie, things are very much on track. I've been able to do a little bit here and there with my dad and as a result we NEARLY got the car to turn over today. We might need to prep the fuel system some more next time we try and it might I'm thinking about getting a new battery for the old gal. The current battery isn't that old, but it has been standing for a year.
The K&N filters I have bought for the car don't seem to fit in so nicely. On the back carb, the airfilter sits mighty close to the engine bay, and I'm concerned that with all that shaking that that engine does, that it will smash up my four hundred buck airfilter. (Something I don't want)
One idea is to have curved pipes comming from the barrels of the carbs, and then mount the filters diagonally. Another idea which might just be better, would be to get the origional tray that bolted onto the end of the carbs and onto the engine. This would give the carbs the support they need. Then intead of forking out for the rest of the origional air assembly. I could mount the two filters ontop of that tray.
Tomorrow on my way to work I'm going to try pick up a new set of spark plugs, and perhaps even a set of spark plug leads.
Man I can't wait to hear that engine again. I got butterflies in my stomach just before we tried turning it over today. whee

w00t w00t! I'm glad to hear she's coming along! I can imagine it's definitely expensive to do stuff with that, given it's age, but it'll be amazing once it's going.
