Nothing's gonna harm you, not while I'm around. Nothing's gonna harm you, no sir, not while I'm around.
Demons are prowling everywhere, nowadays, I'll send 'em howling, I don't care, I got ways.
No one's gonna hurt you, No one's gonna dare. Others can desert you, Not to worry, whistle, I'll be there.
Slavic was busy gazing into the distance-well aware his mental compacity for life was changing drastically. He was avoiding Machu-that was a huge step for him. He was becoming devote to something more. Something more magical and emotional than what he thought was a life. He was changing-and whether or not Kupala agreed that it was so he would woo her or not... but... he liked how he was becoming braver... stronger... Wiser.
He felt as if his Mother and Father gazed down at him with a smile-glad to see their son doing things less-well-waterbuck like. It was a good feeling, and it made him smile into the morning breeze-as the sun began to creep up over the horizon. He felt noble standing there-his brown and white pelt shining. He wondered if it was around breeding season. He had never really stopped and thought about it... he had never had a need to... He being alone.
He wondered what the Rutt was like... hormones raging males to battle... and wondered if he would win if it came to it...

Breeding season was still around, she could feel it. The annual rutt was here and the females were waiting, watching, looking for the one whom they bound to with the lives of their genes. Adhimu'kibwana had not found her yet and as days passed, she had grown more comfortable around Slavic. After meeting Machu, though she'd never tell the waterbuck that she did, she got a brief understanding where this one came from.
Machu didn't order Slavic, Slavic seemed to obey upon the word of suggestion. From what she heard, Machu did not enforce any of his orders... So why? She did understand that he was lazy and all, but the way he spoke about things between the prey and predator, she grew even closer to Slavic...
The female yawned as she nestled herself beside the male, laying herself down, resting her head in a slight arc. She was a little tired.

Slavic shut his eyes and breathed deep the scent of the air... the smell of Kupala near by. He smiled. He enjoyed her company very much. He had always known the life of lonlieness and now-he felt like he belonged.. Sure Machu was 'there' but it wasn't the same. Kupala needed him-until she found her 'Prince'. He frowned... wondering if she would ever see him again-if he-himself would see her again...
He heard her yawn next to him and he turned to see gaze at her with a smile. She was still tired. He chuckled. He stretched his neck and contemplated unfolding his legs and standing up-but he found laying here so comfortable. She very nice. He blinked over at her. "Good morning Kupala." He said simply-his voice showing his emotion. Happiness.
It was nice

She opened one eye, looking up at him. "Good morning to you, my stand-in prince," she joked. In a way, it was the truth. Without Adhimu around, Slavic was the closest thing she had to a prince and a friend for that matter. With his company, she could be at ease that he had her best interest in mind. She could slowly feel like she was putting all her faith into his trustworthy hooves. Just a while longer it seemed.
The female nosed him softly before settling her head back, looking out around them with that feminine grace. Slavic had always given off that strong male scent, it was rather alluring for her, but she knew she shouldn't get involved with him too quickly. Adhimu may still be out there, but she couldn't help herself. Slowly she leaned over, resting her head against his shoulder.
"Been awake long?"

Slavic smiled at her down his muzzle. He felt a bit dizzy at her voice... she was so sweet in everyway and he could barely stand to be next to her and not showing off-prancing around... what not. He nodded to her. He ususally didn't take what she said personally... it was true... she was here because her Prince was gone... but he didn't like to tell himself that... not often.
He reached down to nose at his front leg lightly, then giving it a good lick to straighten the fur. He rather liked his hooves-bright and dark. He looked at her from the corner of his eye. "Not long actually, just watched the sun rise... I love to see the colors." He said, looking over with a shut eyed grin. "I have always been fond of them."

"The prince and I did this every morning too, but never alone. There were always others with us that it just didn't seem as special... looking at it now, with you, I could understand why he was always awake for it," she murmured. She sometimes wondered... if Slavic really desired her, why wasn't he doing everything he could to impress her? Sure the leadership was a good start, but it only gets one so far. But he had earned her trust and her friendship.
She didn't feel like moving all that much today, how they were now was just fine. Besides, she grazed enough the other day and consumed enough water to last her through this day. So, it would be alright for her to be a little lazy today. If the prince was here, he would still continue to push the herd to move, to get them to the water hole, and to find them a nice place to graze.
Throwing the subject out there;
"The season is coming to a close soon, I can feel it..."

Slavic gazed at the sun, feeling the warming rays on his ears-and he twitched them. He blinked a few times-listening to her by directing his ears towards her-funneling in her voice. He nodded slowly. He had done it once with Machu-otherwise he had only done it alone. "I never had anyone who wanted to see the sun with me..." He said simply, not a statement, not a demand... just a fact. "I am still getting used to being around someone who actually enjoys my attention to degree..."
He looked over at her and observed her. She was so beautiful laying in the grass, the lovely markings on her highlighted by the sun. He smiled to himself, a soft look coming to his eyes. "Is it... I thought something like that was going on. Since I was never around anyone for this time of the season... I wasn't completly sure of it... but I felt it... felt a stiring within my chest... I felt uneasy and anxious... and..." He wasn't sure if he could finish his sentance.
"-And I felt a strong desire to be by you Kupala... I am not going to lie." He said straightly, looking at her with a devious grin... waiting to see her reaction.

"Well, I do," she replied softly. She wasn't entirely focusing her gaze on him, it was upon the rising sun. The once dark blue sky was ebbing away from the light, burning into that orange blaze, slowly turning lighter and lighter as that semi-circle crawled from the horizon, waking from its night slumber. Kupala smiled softly. "Well, I like your attention, lets me know that you care."
She could feel his eyes on her. Again, she felt her heart ache a little. It told her to just cut her losses and take what she could, that was the survivalist in her was telling her to do what she must to get what she wanted. She wanted to become a mother with someone who cared about her. But another part of her was pulling her away, telling her to hold out for the one she felt right for her; the prince. Torn in two between Slavic, the one who cares about her or the Prince, the one who has his attention divided to the herd. "Well, lucky for you, there is no contest for any females you find. No other males around..." she cut off, turning to him as he did as well. 'and...'?
She knew he was going to say something along those lines, the hints were always dropped. She smiled and looked back to the horizon. "I guess I do too, but you have done nothing masculine to impress this poor gal. How will I know that you are fit enough to have good genes? How do I know you are prepared to become a father? How do I know you really do love me?"

Slavic felt she was going to say something along those lines. He looked at the ground. What could he do. He hadn't been a leader-he didn't have a herd to lead around and protect. And the things he tried-she'd shoot down. He twitched his ear. "And I do care." He said affirmingly. He gazed at the sun too, watching it inch up-and it was so magical to him. Lots of things were these days. He heard her final phrase and he sighed. "I don't know what to do that is masculine. I cannot fight another male for you-and Kupala... I would though. You know that right? I would fight and lose-to know that you got to be a mother-like you want. Even if it meant me losing... I want what is best for you."
He gazed into the distance for a bit. "I really don't know what I can do to show you..." He said softly. Then he had a bit of a moment of randomness and decided to mention his latest meeting. "I know it's a bit off topic-but I met a young Wild Dog the other day... just a pup... and it made me think about children. And how I hope to never ever have a child that is as-well... Not like that pup... rather nasty she was." He said. "It made me think-how eager I am to become a waterbuck and not a slave."
He began to unfold his legs and stand, shaking lightly to get his fur back into shape. He scratched the ground for a moment with his front hoof. "I do really love you Kupala. And I would gladly die for your honor."

"You don't know what to do to show that your masculine? Come on, Slavic, you don't have something to show up? That is what males do during these rutts right? But some of those knuckle heads are so driven and the only thing their small brains could think of is butting heads," she chuckled as she turned her head back to him. She did appreciate it that he would fight for her and do what he had to to allow her to become the mother she so desired.
"So you are prepared, I imagine, to become a father," she nosed him softly just under his cheek. "So you do love me and care for me," she nosed him again, close to his muzzle.
But that is as far as she went.
She turned her snout away from him, watching the sun. "Two short from a lick, Slavic. I don't see a slave in you, I see a loving, caring male waterbuck."

Slavic nodded his head to her words. He couldn't prove he was the strongest Buck around... Not unless he wanted to butt heads with a warthog-he knew of one nearby. He chuckled. "I imagine the hormones to go ones head at that time..." Came his reply. His tail flicked side to side for a moment as he thought... and looked deep in it for that. "Of course I am prepared... I have been prepared for a while-the moment I set eyes on you Kupala. Is that wrong of me to say?"
He pushed against her lightly at her touch, responding. He smiled and began to groom her cheek a bit before he chuckled. "Yes. I do... I do love you and I do care for you... Enough that I am willing to never see Machu again... to give you up to your prince if he comes. I want you to be happy." He said. "I see a loving caring mother in you Kupala. Even if it isn't mine-I think you would be the best mother for a calf... " He paused. "And a beautiful calve that would be..."

Kupala smiled and leaned back against his shoulder. What else could she say? He had a body, he could strut that off. He had good horns, he could knock something over. Though, she had seen enough of this male to allow him to mate with her. He was a fine male, she would admit, but it was far too soon, but as the time passed in these small moments, that "far too soon" was becoming "about time". She blushed a little that he had decided to become a fahter the moment he saw her. Made her feel a little giddy.
"I've never told anyone this before, but..." she chuckled. "I've always had a little thing for older males, they were just stronger and smarter. It just felt awkward to actually say it before because the prince was about my age and you? Well, you seem to be two or three seasons older than I," Kupala chuckled.
Upon his last comments, she just remained silent and let the words sink in as words run through his mind.
"I see a loving caring mother in you Kupala. Even if it isn't mine-I think you would be the best mother for a calf... "
"Want you to be happy."
"And a beautiful calve that would be..."
"I am willing to never see Machu again...
She carefully raised her head, licking his cheek softly.

Slavic leaned against her in response. He was trying. All his life he tried to be helpful to someone that truely-he wasn't meant to be around. He was born to be a Waterbuck... born to be a male and born to make a happy life. That was the point of life-wasn't it? He wanted Kupala to be the point of his life. He smiled, feeling warmth in his cheeks... in his flesh and blood. "I see. I suppose I would be older... I think I am... three seasons perhaps... I never really counted it." He said, looking at her devilishly. "I never had a reason to count my days."
He felt her lick and looked at her, just observing her for a moment... just looking at her pure grace and beauty. He smiled, his eyes softening. He stepped closer to her and leaned his rump against hers, with a smile. "You are so wonderful... you have changed me so much Kupala..."

Kupala nodded against his shoulder. "Really? I always remember the rutting seasons, I was too young then, but I still remembered them because my mother always ended up pregnant. Father was always strong so no idiot would dare try," she giggled. Father was so weird, but he loved his family. Kupala looked at him and smiled. A part of Slavic reminded her of him.
The male's movements made her giggle, nosing him again. "And you are so kind, I am glad that I was able to make you change."
She raised to her feet and stretched a little.
"Slavic, maybe I'll stay with you, but you still gotta convince this little girl that this male is worth keeping and loving."

Slavic smiled and enjoyed the feeling of her on his shoulder. He grinned warmly and so much peace out here with her... he never wanted this to end. He never wanted her to go away... never. He sat and relished in her attention for a little bit before speaking, leaving nothing but their breathing to fill his ears. "I would have loved to meet your father..." He said quietly.
He lifted his eyelids to gaze at her for another group of moments. "I am glad too Kupala.
He watched her stretch and contemplated a good stretch again but... chose not too. He simply stood and gazed about, looking at the sun as it rose ever higher into the sky. "Little girl?" He asked teasingly.
"I will convince you... Don't worry. I'll do anything I have to get you to keep me..." He said with a grin, walking a small circle around before lifting his nose to scent the air. "I think I need to convince this 'little girl' that she is an adult and a mother to be."
