I was on my myspace earlier, and I read a bulletin one of my friends posted.
Quote:

Wendy Portillo, a Florida Kindergarten teacher, somehow thought it would be a good idea to invite her students, one by one, to tell 5-year old Alex Barton why they didn't like him. She then held a vote on whether the students wanted to keep Alex in their class.

Alex is in the process of being tested for Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism Spectrum Disorder

There is a petition trying to get her fired from teaching. Here is the link:

She had a crap idea. I hope the kid is not scarred, mentally... for life.

( found a website about it)
and gods... how can they say: "the state attorney's office concluded the matter did not meet the criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges will be filed,...."

did not meet criteria???

What's the damn criteria?

I am sure that kid needs some counselling...

Here is what I wrote in the petition:

It is the responsibility of the teachers to help incorporate the child into as much normal school as possible. Holding a class vote to kick one child out because he may be acting up is not an option, especially at the level of kindergarten. Discussing this with my mother right now, we hold the opinion that the parents ought to go to the school board and report the findings of any Autism Spectrum Disorder. What has the school board to say?

Let's turn this around: How would the teacher feel if she were voted out by a jury of her peers, or by the students?

Also, contact Protection and Advocacy in Washington, D.C. and Florida.

Perhaps this is best done in a lawsuit - whatever grounds applied to child trauma, mental distress and maybe even Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are applicable.

For God's sake...

For one, that teacher has no right. She's in the same league as the fascist bigots of old if she thinks it's a good idea to assault a child's self esteem at his age.

Second, if he's autistic/Aspergers syndrome afflicted, they can probably file a civil suit against her and (Possibly) the school district for discrimination based on Mental Handicap or Defect.

I'd personally show that teacher how it feels to be rejected and hated, even if the only way was to drug her up and have the parents of all the autistic kids in that state beat the daylights out of her pathetic self.

For shame... I thought bigotry on this level was impossible in Kindergarten, but apparently not. That teacher's going to rot in purgatory for this, regardless of what false god(s) she worships.

Emily, you're spot on with that petition.

and i can't stand it; there should be grounds for emotional child abuse....

I can only roll my eyes at the law now.

I just can't believe that. It would be hard enough for your average child to deal with that, much less a child with autism. That horrible teacher should never have anything to do with children.

Maybe the teacher should be knocked back to kindergarten to learn basic rules of appropriate behavior. She was probably a bully when she was in school.

Yeah I know how it feels to be bullied by a teacher, I was bullied in 5th grade by my teacher b.c. I acted differently then everyone else. By the time I told my mom it was too late and he was already in retirement..

What about that teacher that got a little girl with Aspie's ARRESTED because she wanted to wear her favorite coat all the time, and they tried to take it away from her, so she became violent. I think she was only eight years old.
Story
They shouldn't have shut her in a separate room for that. I don't blame her for hurting them.
