In a tree some where near the large meadow a second you hug from the branches. His eyes stared at the ground lifeless. His arms and legs hung in on bent ways caused by the strong string running threw his hands and feet. The string was tied to a controller which was tangled oddly among the larger branches. His once bright eyes were focused on the pale vase laying at the base of the tree. It had a large crack running from the brim downwards.
His hair blew in the growing breeze that was starting as a storm started to roll in.

Idhril had come to the Seconds world for a visit, but she wasn't sure any longer how long she was going to stay. She hadn't been there long yet, to be sure, but the wind was picking up, blowing her ground-length black hair all over the place, and she was sure that she had heard thunder at least once. Or maybe it was simply the change in air pressure that was playing with her sensitive ears ... but whatever it was, she knew that there was a storm coming, and that she didn't want to be in it.
She was just walking past the old oak tree when she spotted a vase at its trunk. The vase was very beautiful ... but ...
Her golden eyes grew wide. It was cracked! Did that mean that there was an injured Second somewhere around, who needed help? But who would leave their vase somewhere in that condition? Perhaps someone had put it into the tree for safekeeping, and it had just fallen down ...
She looked up, and her eyes grew even wider. There was a Second up there!
... or at least, it looked like one. She wasn't sure. It also looked very much like a doll ... or a puppet, actually ... strings and all ...
"Hello?" she called, standing at the base of the tree and putting her hands against it so that she wouldn't fall over as she looked up. "Are you okay?"
She waited hesitantly for a reply, then called up, "Are you ... a Second? Or ... are you just a doll that someone made to look like one? Or ..."
A sudden gust of wind blew her dress up around her knees, but she only looked worriedly at the marionette up in the tree. Would it fall? She hoped not - she didn't want him to break, just like the vase, even if he wasn't alive!
"Hold on!" she called, taking a cord from her wrist and tying her hair back so that it wouldn't hinder her as badly. "I'm coming up to save you!"
And, gritting her teeth and doing her best to ignore the growing wind, she started her climb up into the tree.

Joruri just hung there. He wanted to talk he could feel life and see the young girl looking up at him but his vase was damaged he was damaged. He wanted to tell her not to worry about him. He was damaged and no one could or at least would control him.
He tried to move but the wind locked his strings even more. He looked down as a loud crash of thunder sounded above them. He wanted to tell her to leave him. A broken second like him did not need to be saved. He should just be rained on and felt to rot.
He tried to motion to the vase to tell her to wake his vase...if she touched it she could free him from his silent but he could not get it out. He didn't want her to get hurt trying to reach him.

Idhril concentrated on climbing the tree, her concentration so complete that she barely heard the thunder, didn't notice the wind anymore, and didn't notice as the tree's harsh bark tore into her knees and shins, or the tears that were appearing in her dress. She honestly didn't notice. The only thought that was in her mind was to reach the Second (or puppet, she still wasn't sure which, and there was no sound or movement coming from him so she couldn't be sure).
"I'm coming," she called again, nearly choking on some of her hair that had been blown suddenly into her mouth. She spit it out and climbed higher. "I'm almost there ... there!"
She crawled to the branch just beside and above the doll and examined him closely.
"Oh ... you're all tangled," she murmured sadly, seeing his strings. "I'll get you out of here, don't you worry about a thing!"
And she patted him on the head reassuringly, then leaned down and gave him a quick kiss, just a peck, in the crown of his hair, where it went in all different directions. Then she turned her attention to the strings that were tangled in the branches, working as hard and as quickly as she could to untangle him.

With each tear of her flesh or her clothes Joruri heart broke more. Why was she doing this...she was hurting herself for him. He was worthless....he was broken and she was trying to save him.
He wanted to reach his hand down to help her his finger even twitched slightly though it might have been the wind pulling on a tangled string. He wanted to flush in shame as she talked about his string and sounded so down.
Then her actions confused him. Her hand on his head patting him softly and the soft kiss to his hair. Was that real? No it had to have been a rain or wind, why would someone like her help him let alone show affection? She confused him greatly.
As she started to loosen his strings his limbs would slide more into a free dangle. More weight being added to the controller's cross and on the thin branch that held it. He should fall he should break so he would not have to see her hurt any more. He could not see her action but his heart was still pained knowing she was doing so much for him. She didn't even know him.
"Please...." he manage to whisper out it was no louder than the wind...and he he was not even sure he got it out. Maybe this was all just a delusional dream.

Idhril worked as quickly as she could, but as safely as she could, to free the strings from the branches in which they were entangled. She could see that more and more of the puppet's weight was being held by the large cross on the small branch, but she didn't know any other way to get him down.
She only hoped that he wouldn't fall.
"Almost there," she murmured softly, wrapping her legs securely around one of the thicker branches for support and then reaching up with her hands and trying to pull the controller free. It was snagged on the thin branch that it was resting on, and the branch had to be stronger than it looked, for it was holding all of the puppet's weight - or perhaps the puppet was just very light.
"I ... got it!" she cried triumphantly as she closed her fingers around the cross's edge. The branch snapped then, falling down to the ground below, and suddenly it was Idhril who was very suddenly holding the marionette's weight. As it slid free from its perch in the tree, she cried out, tightening her hands on the controller as her arms were jerked down and her face was slammed against the branch that she was wrapped so tightly around.
She paused a moment then, fighting back tears of pain and setting her jaw in determination. She had to save this poor puppet, she had to! And quickly. The wind was beginning to hurt her sensitive ears now, and soon it would probably begin to rain.
"Are you okay?" she called down to the puppet as it dangled above the ground. "You're pretty close to the ground now ... I'm going to let you go very carefully so that you don't fall too hard okay? I'll try make it not hurt!"
And she wriggled down the branch until the puppet was dangling only a few small inches above the ground.

Joruri winced hearing the branch snap and he did not fall he could feel her pain. He was hurting her so much. He just wanted her to move on to leave him to the rain and the elements. It was his fault he was there in the first place. He could feel a faint warmth on his strings, a thin trail of her blood from her cut hands. Tears tried to form in his unblinking eyes.
Thankfully he was as light as a puppet when he was inactive. Why couldn't she have taken the vase first, though his controller could dictate his action it was his vase that would bring him to life for his master.
Feeling himself being lowered he had to comply her soft voice filled with determination drove threw deep into his unbeating heart. Her hand flicked the control bar just ride so his feet shifted under him and his body leaned against the tree. He would be fine if let him go.
He wanted to beg her to awaken him so he could repay her. He needed to protect her and thank her. She had risked her life and hurt herself of him. No one had ever done that for him...at least he didn't think so.

Idhril paused a moment longer, wary of letting the puppet go in case it got hurt more than it already had to have been - but the wind was picking up again, and she didn't want him to get tangled in the branches all over again, so, after counting to three, she closed her eyes and let him drop.
"Please don't be hurt," she begged him as she headed back down the tree, jumping from the lowest branch to kneel beside him. She wiped her bloody hands on her dress then lifted his head, cradling him against her body like an injured child.
"Are you all right?" she asked, blocking him from the wind. "I have to take you somewhere safe ... there's a storm coming ..."
She wondered if she would be able to carry him. Yes, he was light, certainly; but he was also the size of a teen, and thus quite tall and awkward to carry. Besides, if she was going to take his vase to shelter as well, as she wanted to, then she would have ... well ... difficulties.
"Stay here," she ordered the motionless puppet, rather needlessly. "I'll bring your vase here and then we can see what to do, okay?" And she stroked his head once before lowering him to the ground once more, then ran over to the other side of the tree where his broken vase has fallen - she assumed. The wind in her eyes, she grabbed it by both handles and lifted it to carry it back to the broken puppet.

He stood for a moment when she let him go and leaned against the tree before he slid down to sit at the bottom. He wanted to hug her to thank her to do something...even answer her problem but he was trapped in his state of silence.
He felt a blush that did not show on his pale flesh that was cold but human like to the touch as she stroked his cheek. He sighed as the sight of her disapeared as he lowered his head and all he could see was the ground.
He could feel the heat of her scrapped hands grabing the handles of his vase. He could feel her worry for him and her need to protect him. Why was she trying so hard to safe something like him. He felt his fingers twitch and his eyes start to focus. He wish he knew her name at least...as he started to feel air forcing its way into his body and the heaviness of life returning to him. His heart did not beat though for that was something the creators must have left out and he could feel how hazy he was....he was damaged...no one would want him.
He saw the tattered ends of her dress and her long black hair move into his prerfieral vison. How could he show her he was alive again with out scarring her. He knew now at least he was far to heavy for her to carry. He could feel the pain of her ears in this wind and the cuts on her body she was ignoring. He winced and as she knelt near him he shifted to warp her in his arms, pulling her into his folded form, and folding his wings so the wind would be blocked from her beautiful ears. "Mistress....." he said is a very soft, sad, and worried voice. In his voice echoed what might be a beautiful low and warm sound.
"Mistress..." he started again, "Your hurt....for me....?" Why was his mind so fuzzy....why did his thoughts not work....nor his body fully yet?

Idhril cried out in surprise when the marionette seemed to come alive, pulling her into his arms and holding her close as if she now were the infant and he the rescuer - but the moment his beautiful wings blocked the wind from her ears she felt warm and safe, and she huddled close to him.
At his word, she looked up at him sharply, her eyes filled with wonder and joy, though she was half wondering if she had been hearing things, for the voice had been so soft and so quiet ... but then he spoke again, and this time she could see his lips moving as well, and she knew for a fact that this puppet that she had rescued ... was alive.
Her eyes filled with tears of joy. "You're alive!" she cried, pressing her head against his chest and throwing her arms around him, hugging him tightly. "You're alive! I'm so happy! Are you all right? Are you hurt?"
Her fingers moved lightly over his head. "You seem all right," she murmured, her tears already drying (though it might have been due to the strong wind). "But your vase is broken ..."
She peered out from between his wings to look at the beautiful vase with the enormous crack in it, and a look of pain crossed her face. "I don't know if it can be fixed," she said sadly, shivering a bit in the puppet's arms. "But that means ... that you're hurt, too ..."
She looked up at him, her golden eyes wide and filled with suffering on his behalf. Her own wounds weren't bothering her at all - she hadn't even noticed them yet, and wouldn't allow herself to even realize that she had been hurt until she was sure that her little rescuee was all right.
There was a sudden crack of thunder, and she jumped a bit, startled, and wrapped her arms around him again, closing her eyes against it and pressing her face against him. They had to find somewhere safe to hide from this storm ... but where?

Joruri felt his head wince as she cried out in shock he had not ment to scare her. Not after what she had done but feeling her huddle against him he shifted to bring her in closer to the protection of his small wings.
He looked at her his eyes full of life though haunted and confused looking. He reached a hand down to wipe a tear away and as she hugged him tighter his arms wrapped more securely around her keeping her safe from the wind and the chill of the coming storm.
As she talked about his vase his fractured mind played on how pretty her darker tan skin was against his ghastly pale flesh. Though her shivers brought his attention back. "Hurt....mind....trapped....but mistress saved..." He shifted a hand up to gently stroke her head his fingers moving threw the silken hair, his eyes moving to watch it slide between his fingers.
He was trying to mimic the reassuring touches she had given him but he kept getting distracted on his attempts to calm the girl within his arms.
Hearing the crack and feeling her jump his body tightened around her as if to protect her from all that could harm her. "Safe....mistress safe...." his said his word more confident than before the lower rich tones coming out.
This eyes moved to look at his cracked vase. He could not believe she would risk her life for someone who was broken. He rested his chin atop her hair still holding her close. "Mistress..."

Idhril looked up at the marionette, her golden eyes glowing with trust and comfort - but also with curiosity.
"Why do you keep calling me mistress?" she asked him softly, clenching one fist on his shirt for comfort. "Isn't that what a servant calls their female master? But I'm not your master ... I want to be your friend ... I want to take care of you ..."
There was another crack of thunder, and she yelped and tried to make herself as small as possible against him.
"We have to get out of the storm," she gasped, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. "Out from under the tree, if it gets struck by lightning it could explode and kill us!"
She scrambled off his lap and tried to tug him to his feet, but he was heavy now - far heavier than he had been when she had gotten him down from the tree. What had happened? She couldn't even begin to lift him now!
"Come on!" she urged him, taking his hand instead and tugging on it. "Come on-"
She stopped in her tracks. "What ... is your name?" she asked sheepishly. "I forgot to ask ..."

Joruri felt a blush fill his cheeks at her look. He blushed even more knowing it would show up. His hand shyly started to rub her back trying to comfort her. "Y...mistress saved...me....don't know name...."
He gasped softly and stroked her hair. He was about to say they would be safe under the tree but she bolted from his lap. He felt her tugging at him. It had been so long since he had walked...but she was begging him.
He winced at the fear in her voice and stood. "Mistress give name...?"' he smiled at her a small shy one as he started to move with her. He left his vase under the tree her need to find a safe place far more important now.

Idhril heard his words about not knowing his own name, and her heart broke for him all over again. She reached for his vase and held it against her hip, then took his hand with her free hand and started leading him over to a cave she had been told about.
"That's so sad," she murmured, looking up at him as they walked, aided by the wind. "Do you ... have a home? Or family? Or anyone to look after you?"
She felt so bad for him, so filled with pity ... she couldn't leave him alone, not now, not when he so obviously needed her to take care of him, to teach him things, and even apparently to give him a name. She wasn't very good at thinking of names - even her grandfather had had to help her name her dragon, Xue.
But then she started to think of her brother, Shiro ... he spoke another language, Japanese, that grandmother sometimes spoke ... and there were lots of names in that language that sounded really nice, even if she didn't know what they meant. One in particular was suddenly leaping out at her, and she looked up at the marionette anxiously.
"What about ... Joruri?" she asked him worriedly. "Do you like that name?"
She didn't know why but it seemed to her that it fit him somehow.
