I finally got around to reading Buckland's "Big Blue Book" the other day and in it he talks about using numerology to plan important decisions, helping to find a craft name, etc..., but how practical is that. I've been considering opening an online shop, and thought I'd try finding the right name using numerology, but after a couple of hours of trying not to rip my hair out - I gave it up and went with the name I had originally chosen. (My birth number is 2 and nothing seems to match that number.) It seems like a great idea, but just don't see how it translates to everyday use.

So...I was wondering how many people actually use numerology on a regular basis, and if you do - is it something you use daily, or only for really important decisions?

The only extent to which I use numerology is in a manner not typically meant by the term 'numerology.' I use numbers for their symbolism. What is typically called numerology is often unrelated to the symbolism of numbers, something that always struck me as very strange when looking at the tables of meanings. You'd think that by now this sort of thing wouldn't strike me as strange at all given how often the more academic research I do contradicts typical correspondence tables. xd

In my opinion, numerology is just one of several different methods of planning or deciding upon things. There's runes, there's tarot, there's pendulums, theres, theres....crap I forget what all else there is.. sweatdrop

To me, I use numerology constantly, and realize I do it without thinking about it. Particularly just finding little things here and there. I think I know what you mean about Buckland's numerology, isn't that the one where he lines up all the numbers with 1-9.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
A B C D E F G H I
etc...

That there I find annoying when he considers using it for naming things. Unless it's something EXTREMELY important, I don't bother with it. It can be used for things as simple as seeing into the future, the way astrology, or other tools used for prediction, but I don't bother with that.

I've done some work with numerology and I just don't understand it. I don't see how numbers can represent and mean specific things. I mean I realize there is more to it than that, but it's not something I know a lot about or work with.

I like to use it just to see how something adds up. Although it's rare to get anything to add up to a 9. My job choice was a great one cause what it lead me to, but it doesn't add up to 9, neither does my city nor my spiritual name. XD Guess I just like numbers and am a geek like likes to play with it

I think when I was younger I read to much about numberology to be honest. It is an interesting topic thought but, not something my personal craft calls for. Nor does it truely interest me in the fullest, I've often found it boring. And I have to agree with Starlock, I don't use numerology one normallty would. I use the symbolism of alotd numbers.

The numbers take different meanings when displayed in certain ways. Personally, the numbers can vary from person to person. I have my own set of meanings. Of course, one could also look at the meanings on a set of cards. For example, a regular deck of cards of a single suit, has a set labeled from Ace (1) to 10 (0). So anyone in cartology could simply just make the connections. Some people use Tarot significances, others use Jewish and Kabbalistic meanings.

Simply a search on Numerology should help.

Some people use it to define what their name brings them. What they can expect being born on a certain day, of a certain time, of a certain sign, etc... It could be a divination technique, or in my own place, I use it as a diversion for my obsession with the number 9. I find neat little ways of finding the number everywhere. It keeps me alert and thinking, and that's never a bad thing.

The most resent Numerology test I took was on the spot.
Though, like all things, It's flawed.
Be it the user or the method.
When you're trying to think of names and such, follow your heart.
When you start relying on Divination and such to name YOUR store, you sorta lose your individuality and your "you-ness".
Follow your heart, not the cards.

Yeah, that's why it's never a good idea to use numerology for these things. It's not that you can't, but really, up to the person who uses it. Although, it is kinda neat seeing what you can come up with simply by trying to get a number specific name.
All things have some sort of flaw, nothing's perfect. But, after a while, people start to see these things, and get obsessed with it. I might have my obsession, but at least I don't go as mad as the guy from Number 23 went (great movie by the way, really explains some of this stuff, not the individual meanings of all numbers, but at least how to come up with numbers), and I will find myself doing these little things anyways. You'd be surprised what people can do when you find out little things to do these.
