Fenris stood on the riverbank, he'd been reluctant to leave it ever since, well, whatever had happened. He didn't really know what happened, he remembered his name, Fenris, Fen for short. He remembered a voice saying only his name, though he didn't remember a face or anything, just a voice. He remembered climbing out of the river, and the days since. The final thing he knew about himself, he was fast, and he liked it. Scratch that, he loved it, and his speed had devoured his entire being along with the other tidbits he remembered.

He always travelled away from the river during the day, but returned at night... It held the key, or so he thought. However, today he was out a little way into the savannah. The adolescent was only walking at the moment, eyes open for anything he could catch and eat as his mind cranked through the few memories he had. Thinking too far back gave him a terrible headache... But he had to try. Once again, as it had every other time he tried to remember, the headache distracted him from remembering. The cheeton gave a slight snarl and gave up for now as he continued to prowl amongst the grass.

Jethro trotted happily over the landscape, looking around as though seeing it for the first time. Really though, the view had gotten quite mundane to him. All the same plants, all the same bugs. Nothing about the place really called out to him anymore; nothing sparked adventure in his mind. It was the whole reason he had embarked on yet another journey outside the rogue lands. Into another pride to take in new sights.

This was the return trip.

He sighed heavily, already bored even though he had only just returned home. Why couldn’t he find something new to captivate him for more than one measly day? Then, as if to respond to his thoughts, the young male spotted something moving over the savannah. It looked like a cheetah. But…. Not really. He wasn’t sure if he had seen anything quite like the lad before in his life.

Whether or not he knew what kind of animal he was, though, proved irrelevant. Jethro spotted the boy’s expression. Like something was bothering him, even causing him pain. That was enough to prompt Jethro to move over to him and investigate things further. “Are you alright?” he asked lightly, careful not to startle the boy.

Fenris' attention snapped to the creature in front of him. He tweaked his brain for the name for the creature, he knew it, knew it was in there! Look at how old he was, certainly Fenris could remember something that probably even young ones knew...

Started with an L. That's as far as he got, and it gave the green cheeton great annoyance, he knew he knew it.

"I... Think I'm alright," Fen said somewhat distractedly as he padded closer. His tail flicked lightly behind him as he attempted to come up with the name for this species in the back of his mind, though that, too brought on a bit of a headache. He gave up, he'd just ask if the opportunity came up. "My name's Fenris, what's yours?" The black thing (as he would call it in his head until he remembered that this was a lion) before him seemed trustworthy enough, he cared to know whether Fen was alright. He figured the stranger could know 1/3 of all about him.

“Jethro,” replied the male with a broad, welcoming grin. He was always happy to make a new friend, even with something he wasn’t quite sure the species of. Still a large cat and still smart enough to speak with him. And he didn’t look delicious. Those were all qualities of a potential friend in the book of Jethro. Pretty much anything he didn’t want to eat he would try to befriend, and even that wasn’t set in stone. Sometimes he wondered what it would be like having a friend in a zebra.

But every time he got close enough to talk to one of them, he just ended up leaping on top of them and biting into their necks. Old habits.

“So, Fenris, what brings you out here? I don’t think I’ve seen you around these parts before. Not that I’ve seen everyone there is in these lands, but still.” he asked lightly, feeling it a little rude to just ask him what kind of animal he was without building a bit of a trust base first. Didn’t want to come off as nose or, worse yet, an idiot.

"Nice to meet you Jethro," Fenris said. He realized as he said it that this would be a memory, and that provided him some comfort. It was terrifying to sit with nothing in the past to think about. Now he'd have something interesting. "I'm in search of food, I haven't eaten since early yesterday, so hunger's driving me. Beyond that, I stay along the banks of the river back there," Fen said with a quick jerk of the head to indicate the river was behind him.

He thought he could get through this conversation, this meeting, without indicating that he knew nothing about his past. However, this didn't seem to be the case. While the topic hadn't been brought up, he felt the need to talk about it, maybe this black thing had the same experience sometime? He didn't know how common it was, his past was gone. "Jethro, can I ask you a weird question?" Fen asked. He didn't wait for a response and continued, "Have you ever forgotten everything? Everything but your name?" He asked, completely giving away his problem. He really, really hoped the creature would say yes. The desperation glittered in his sapphire eyes. Even for the thing to have heard of such a case would ease the teen's mind.

Jethro nodded. Food. The usual reason to be up from a nap. For him hunting was secondary to exploring, but still a large portion of his life.

“Forgotten… everything?” Jethro watched the boy, utterly bewildered by the perplexing inquiry. He could practically feel the hopefulness radiating from the boy as he waited for a response, but Jethro couldn’t just lie to the lad about something that was probably very serious. He sat himself down, as one often did when completely dumbfounded, and stared at the young lad a moment longer. “No,” he finally replied, “I haven’t forgotten everything before. Why? Can’t you… can’t you remember anything but your name?”

Now he had real reason to be concerned about the boy. He was wondering around without any sense of his whereabouts, or even of himself? That was not a good thing. Clueless-ness bred danger- however unavoidable said clueless-ness happened to be. Now Jethro couldn’t leave. If he just walked away from him while he was clearly in need of help, and something happened to him, he would never forgive himself.

Unless this Fen was toying with him. Then he would be pissed.

Smiling warmly, he decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. “Why don’t we find you something to eat before we talk anymore? Maybe some food will help you feel better.”

From the creature's reaction, clearly what he had was abnormal. The cheeton's ears dipped in disappointment. It was weird, and he wondered if there would ever be a way to fix it. Everyone had a past, everyone! A past that lasted more than the past week. That much he knew from his recent experiences. He'd caught a preybeast, interrogated it and let it loose, and that was when he realized... that there was a big problem. He hadn't just been born, he'd been walking this earth for how many moons? He did not know. And he didn't know what he was like. Had he been sweet and kind? Had he been cruel? He tried to remember again, he focused on the memory of the river, but his headache flooded him and he gave up quickly with a little wince.

"I can remember my name, a faceless voice calling my name- which is how I know what my name is- and pulling myself out of the river a week ago, along with what's happened to me in the last week. That's a big problem, isn't it?" Fenris asked before the black thing decided to go get food. He assumed so from his own smarts, but hearing it confirmed... would be good.

The green cheeton rose to his paws and started to head out to the savannah, agreeing with Jethro. "At least I still have my instincts, I'd be dead without them." Fen said with a chuckle, trying to make a bit light of a heavy situation.

“Well,” Jethro mused thoughtfully, “it’s a problem, yes. But I don’t know think you need to get too worried about it. Maybe your memories will come back to you in time, yeah? If you wander around a bit, maybe you’ll find something that sparks a memory or at least gives you a hint towards how you might go about getting your memory back. I can help you, if you’d like. Though… I don’t really know what I could really do for you, except ask anyone else I happen to meet if they know you.” He frowned, disappointed in himself for not being able to do more for the young animal. Whatever he was, he was certainly having a rough time of things. Not being able to remember anything?

Jethro wasn’t sure how he would handle that. Just thinking about it made his tummy tighten.

He smiled as the cheeton started to walk with him to find some food. “Yeah, that is good,” he offered lightly, “if those skills are still in your mind, maybe everything else it too. Just kind of… stuck somehow, you know?” In all honesty he knew nothing of how amnesia worked, or how one went about getting rid of it. But he didn’t want to keep to gloomy ‘you’re so screwed’ remarks. That wouldn’t help things either. Jethro had learned to keep positive as much as possible.

Fenris thought heavily on Jethro's words. He found hope in them, in all honesty, he hoped he wouldn't forget this meeting, too. If they were still in his head, somewhere, he knew he could get them back someday, if he thought hard enough. He was sure that, someday, if he really concentrated and ignored the headache he'd loosen them from their hiding.

"I hope you're right, that would put me at ease," Fen confided to the black thing as they padded along. He only hoped they were true. "And yes, that would be very helpful of you, if it's not too much trouble." Fenris said as the pair of them padded along. "I'm sure lucky that the first..." Crap, what was that word that started with an L?? Realizing he'd stopped his sentence, Fen picked it up again quickly, "... lucky that the first thing I ran into was a nice... thing." Alright, out with it.

"What are you? What you are starts with L." Jethro understood his situation, so hopefully the question wouldn't weird the black thing out too much.

As the male struggled to find a word, Jethro frowned. He couldn’t imagine how tough it was not remembering anything. Hopefully he would never have to go through that sort of thing.

“What am I?” Repeated Jethro, a little befuddled at first. Thankfully, the mentioning of the letter “L” helped tip him off to what it was the young male was asking about, “oh! I’m a lion,” he said rather proudly. The male was almost thrilled to answer the question. He felt like a teacher, sort of. It was an oddly powerful position. However limited-time it was meant to be.

And he knew they would eventually part ways- Jethro had other places to visit and he couldn’t take the boy with him. There was no saying how dangerous his explorations would be. Couldn’t risk it.

Even if he did feel sorry for the guy.

He strolled slowly over the dirt, looking around for something they might be able to eat. Didn’t seem to be much around, though.

"Lion, Oh that's right!" He said scrunching his face momentarily. Felt like a tip-of-the-tongue moment, which was comforting. It said to him, that he still had his memories, they were just buried. They could be recovered.

"Hmm... " Fen's sapphire eyes scanned the area just as Jethro's had to find nothing. "Maybe I'd ought to go back to the river and try to catch some fish?" He hadn't tried, not that he remembered. He wouldn't know that a cheeton would be bad at catching them. "Or do you think there's something around here, just hiding?" He asked the lion with a head tilt.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 10, 2008 6:49 pm

"Yeah," hummed Jethro after giving the place a good, final, scan over. Still nothing, "I think fishing would be the best at this point. There's nothing out here to hunt!" He didn't want to take the guy too far from where he had been found. Maybe someone knew he was there and would come for him?

Since there wasn't an animal to be found, Jethro turned, heading back towards the water's edge. He peered into it, wondering if there was anything in there they needed to worry about. It wasn't memory loss that inflicted his judgment, just a general lack of knowledge. He hated water, and thus had never really fished before.

Fen gave a nod at the lion's words and turned around to face the river. To many, a river might be a threat; there were many ways a river could take your life. Or, as was the case with Fen, completely erase all that you know. His ignorance of this fact, however, caused the cheeton to believe with all his being that the river was life-giving. He had a bit of belief that the river had saved his life. After all, it gave food and water. There were often trees for shelter nearby, too.

He wasn't hesitant at all to head over near the river. He didn't restrain from purring or bounding into shallow water on the bank. River was good, in his mind. The cheeton paused once he got in place, and waited for some fish to begin to ignore him. He was able to quickly swipe up a minnow. Fen held it in his white paw, the little fish squirmed between his pads, to no avail. He presented it to Jethro. "These little ones aren't very smart, they come right up to ya. Enough of them makes a pretty good meal..." he said before popping the fish down his mouth.

"You give it a shot!" he suggested, going a few feet further downstream to make way for the lion.

Jethro watched the water suspiciously, waiting to see if it leaped up and tried to drag him under. Wouldn’t put it past his luck- he seemed to have a lot of bad karma despite always trying to do the right thing. Then again, Fen didn’t seem to hate it so why should he be so nervous? The strange lion-like creature was much smaller than him, and much easier for the water to pick off should it decide to attack.

If he wasn’t nervous, Jethro shouldn’t be either.

Watching him jump into the murky liquid so easily made the gray male’s skin crawl, his fur all but rippling over the uncomfortable sensation. How could anyone be so buddy-buddy with water? He just couldn’t understand it. Never had he had a pleasant encounter with the stuff. Neutral ones like baths, but never good ones. The one time he had gone in water for recreational purposes he had nearly drowned and, even though he had been nothing more than a cub at the time, he had never forgiven it. Never learned to swim, either.

He kept his eyes on the smaller animal, worried that something was about to go horribly wrong. A concern that quickly melted away the moment he realized just how comfortable with the water Fen really was. Watching him fish was like watching some kind of crazy, super-advanced dance. Now Jethro knew he should have gone first; he was going to look like an idiot.

Slowly he climbed into position, smiling nervously. “I’m… not very good at this,” he muttered as he looked into the bane of his existence. The fish were swimming around, mocking him. He quickly swiped at the water, mimicking the other’s movements, but he was so focused on not falling in he completely missed the target. “Oh..” he hummed in disappointment, “I missed that one.”

Oblivious to all forms of feline logic, Fen continued to fish minnows out of the cool water in the river. He rather enjoyed the taste... The river gave him life once more, tightening the feline's fondness of it. He did find Jethro's resistance to the water just a little odd, but not that much. Not everyone could like the same things as him, life would be boring that way.

"Here, I can get some for ya..." He said, taking a swipe at the minnows and treading over to shore on three legs, the fourth holding the fish. He plopped them on the bank for his new friend, where they squirmed weakly as the last ounce of life left them. "Eat 'em while they're cool, trust me." Fen said with a wink. "They're better that way, tell me if you like them!" He said before he waded out a little deeper again to try to catch some more food. He'd have to stand still for a while before more would come, but he could wait.
