when I was a kid I played LEFT WING on a 5-man front... ("WHAT?? WHRE??"...dang kids) my job was to bring the ball down the touchline at full speed and center it to the primadonna strikers and centers to score...every now and then I got in a shot from the corner of the penalty area...or snuck in to the box to drill one into the net myself ( my coach used to get soooo angry!!)
NOW I coach...and I LOVE it...! been the coach since 1998 and the expericence has been great... from helping my eldest win Gold and Silver at the IOWA GAMES after years of getting our butts kicked... to last year's tourney with my U12 team... we needed to win one game by TWENTY GOALS to stay in it...and by the noise we made you'd have thought we were the hands-down CHAMPS
(me mad "WHATS THE MAGIC NUMBER?!?" them scream "20!! 20!! 20!!")
MAN!! makes you feel GOOD to have kids with that much heart...we got beat, but I dont think any of the other coaches had a BETTER team with such a
strong spirit...we didnt get our twenty
crying , but we held the top team to only 4 goals...and managed to break thier scoreless streak!!
There is nothing like leading a ragtag bunch of sissies, momma's boys, sickies and focus-challenged tomboys to VICTORY!!! ( I aint one of those coaches who just keep the GOOD kids... I train/play every and anyone...my favorite quote from me is: "
your momma paid good money for you to be a soccer star..and by god this weekend YOUR GONNA BE ONE!! GET OUT THERE!!")
...and even better is being there to prop them back up when they LOSE...best feeling in the world is to look kids in the eye after a defeat and tell them they dont the BEST JOB you have ever seen...and then get them ready to do it again next practice...
MY advice is when you youth playing days are over...COACH!!! COACH!!! COACH!!!
Spread the love!!!
