Kerrigan burrowed his face ever further into the corner of the cave, a feral growl welling up in the furthest recesses of his throat. His ears were pinned flat against his skull-patterned head, his tail lashing irritably. The bone charms woven into his silken mane jangled as his body shook with barely suppressed rage, their haunting melody sounding almost ethereal when partnered with the jovial birdsong of the early morning.

Birdsong.

Birdsong should be outlawed.

Kerrigan ground his teeth as the incessantly shrill twitters and caws frayed his already volatile temper.

It was times like these when he wished his herbavore's teeth were the sharpened fangs of a Kalona or a Skinwalker. It was times like these when he wished that his stomach didn't curl at the very thought of the salty taste of blood, that the goodness in his heart that no amount of vile thoughts could extinguish would just vanish. It was times like these that he hated having to wish for a more useful body at all.

Oh, if he was a Kalona... if he was a Skinwalker...

Birds would sing no more.

Darkfire's head hurt. It had been a long night, and she hadn't eaten anything since that badger... she preferred not to think of what else she could've eaten, as the thought of eating that particular Soquili made bile threaten to make an appearance.
She shook loose twigs and plants from her mane as she stood, frowning and groaning as her legs shook with the effort. After a moment, she felt better, and she stretched her wings with a yawn. Her tail thrashed about behind her as usual, scraping against trees and leaving deep gouges in the otherwise-perfect bark. Her horn felt somewhat pressured, as though something was pushing it farther into her skull. Yet, the Unikalona mare wasn't at all worried about it; she had probably just slept on it funny.
Stretching out her legs, Darkfire walked over to the pool of clear water in her area, glaring at her reflection for a moment before slapping it with her taloned wing. She didn't feel like looking at the gash on her face that the badger had left, the deep circles under her eyes.
You monster, the unicorn side of her muttered. Sighing, Darkfire closed her eyes. She was in no mood for the bloody unicorn side of her to make an appearance. Thankfully, her Kalona side was still fast asleep, dormant in the back of her mind until she embarked on a mission to kill.
A bird trilled in the background. No ordinary trill; this one was particularly annoying. It resonated in her ears, a hollow sound that made her slightly more angry. She could feel the Kalona side of her stirring, the overwhelming urge to kill the bloody thing rising in her body.
Darkfire stomped over to stand under the tree where the bird was, staring up at it, trying to pinpoint the exact location. "Shut the hell up!" she called up to it, trying to avoid having to fly up there. When that didn't work, she sighed. The Kalona side of her cackled in her mind, and she felt a thin smile spread across her lips.
Suddenly, she sprang from the ground and flew up to the side of the tree, spearing the fat bird on her horn. She floated back to the ground after it had stopped moving and making noise, pulled it off her horn with her wing, and proceeded to eat it.
It tasted old.

Kerrigan's head slowly turned, one eyebrow quirked in silent question.
The voice that had pierced through the still morning air... demanding, threatening. And something else. Something powerful. Something... intriguing.

The sounds of wing beats crackled through the air, a disgustingly moist-sounding squish...

The birds sang no more.

He turned, the swift and fluid movement reminiscent of feline grace. A single quick stride brought him to the mouth of the cave. His eyes, wrought of fire delved from the depths of hell itself and then extinguished by an insufficiently normal body, stared with penetrating intensity at the land about him.

The sight that met his eyes was a welcome one indeed.

The ruby-red mare was devouring the annoying little songbird.

Kerrigan watched her eat with silent approval. If he had hands in place of hooves, he would have clapped.

When he saw the blood-stained horn, he could have vomited. A half-breed.

... Something... intriguing.

As Darkfire munched contentedly on the bird, she kept her eyes away from the mouth of the cave. She had sensed-- and heard-- another's presence, but she was too excited for having killed something that made her head hurt so much. She'd investigate later, when she had less things on her mind.
It's watching you, the unicorn warned.
Go kill it too, you could use the protein, joked the Kalona side. The Kalona side of her was joking. She wanted to throw up, the thought sickened her so much. The unicorn side of her had been slowly making its appearance over the past few days, but of course, the Kalona side always won.
Now that she had finished the bird, Darkfire was angry. Why was it still watching her? Out of the corner of her emerald eye, she could see a dark stallion. How come he didn't kill the damn bird? Did he actually enjoy it, or was he too weak to kill it himself?
Shrugging it off, Darkfire lifted her head from the bloody pile of feathers and bones and faced the stallion. He had watched her the whole time she was eating, he had rushed to the mouth of the cave when the songbird sang no more. Maybe excitement and gratitude had brought him to the place where he stood now, but something else kept him rooted there; it looked like he was about to vomit. Maybe it was seeing the blood?
"What are you looking at?" Darkfire spat, the unicorn side of her tsking at her over-aggressiveness, and the Kalona side of her relishing in its control.

A slight shiver of pleasure trickled down his spine at the scorn in her voice. Good. Perhaps that vile horn spouting from her ruby skin was reminiscent of nothing more than mixed blood, not any particular tendency to lean towards the shining purity of those despicable unicorns...

"You..." he paused, a smirk twisting his mouth into grimace of scornful pride "... halfbreed." His voice was condemning, its resonating cadence simply oozing disdain.

Even if her two sides had fought and Evil had won, even if she would tear him apart for simply stating what was obvious to all those who had eyes to see... She was tainted. Her cruelty would never be as delicious as that of a pureblood. Her deeds would be never be as dark, her sordid nature imbued with honor.

Better to be forever longing for true power, but never getting a taste, than to be denied it by your heritage.

Darkfire felt the muscle under her eye twitch just ever-so-slightly. The arrogant, condemning tone of his voice made her want to rip his face off and feed it to a small flock of birds. Songbirds, just to smite him. She felt an evil grin tug at her lips, but she pushed it back; now was not a time to show weaknesses, or her enjoyment of the little argument. Now was the time to scare the living s**t out of this stallion, so he'd regret that he ever opened his big mouth.

"What did you call me?" she asked him calmly, standing up from the position in which she munched on the bird and spreading her taloned wings.

Oh no he didn't, gasped the Kalona side of her, growling. The growling took over Darkfire herself, and she felt it rise up from deep within her chest. The unicorn side of her was oddly silent, and the Kalona side, besides growling, seemed to be purring. Kalona-Darkfire was in complete control now.

"You, insignificant pony, should watch your tongue before I rip it out," she said in a low, dark voice, approaching the stallion with her teeth bared, her wings spread wide, and her tail thrashing about wildly.

Don't talk, go for the throat, hissed the Kalona-Darkfire. Silence came from the Unicorn-Darkfire. Obviously, it was just as pissed off with the stallion as Kalona-Darkfire.

Perhaps it was stupidity that kept his hooves rooted firmly to the ground. Perhaps it was honor. Perhaps integrity... no, nothing so noble. It was simple lust.

Ah, the power in her quivering muscles. The threat resonating in that voice that held shadows within its depths. Those gleaming teeth, pinprick-sharp points so close to his tender skin. Wings that ended in cruel talons, spaded tail cutting through the air... She was power. She was cruelty. She was Kalona.

All that he longed to possess, all that his body craved. To gnash his teeth on something other than blades of grass! To tear something apart and relish the blood, not turning a disgusted eye at the last moment! To-

He had almost forgotten that this "Kalona" was a halfbreed.

"Try it, plow-horse." his breath bated in anticipation, he watched her hungrily as she stalked forward.

Darkfire watched the stallion with disgust. How dare he! She would squash him like the insignificant little mosquito that he was with a single flick of her tail, a single bite from her teeth. Oh, how she wished she would have the common courtesy to dispose of him in a quick, painless manner, but it was too good for him; slow and painful, the only way to go for someone so... brave.

Nobody had ever stood up to her before. Nobody had defied her wishes, and if they had tried, she had ripped out their throats before they had a chance to prepare themselves. Now this stallion stood, hooves firmly planted, eyeing her with... something she definitely did not want to see.

Tear his eyes out, the pervert, giggled the Kalona-Darkfire, and the real Darkfire suddenly had the startling mental image of herself as a foal, minus the ugly unicorn horn, jumping up and down excitedly after her first kill. It sent excited chills down her spine, hearing the Kalona-Darkfire's childish giggling. It gave her power, strength. And it made the Unicorn-Darkfire even more silent, if that was even possible.

"You would be so lucky as to have me anywhere near your mouth," growled the ruby-red Unikalona, a grin spreading across her face like poison ivy. "But, before I get so close to you, I must say, I admire your bravery... or your stupidity. Whatever you call it, all in the eye of the beholder."

His lips twitched in response to her malicious grin, but he just couldn't bring himself to smile.

Her words were like poisoned honey.

"It's difficult to fear something that possesses such wild beauty." Of course, the stallion had never known true fear. Oh, there had been those tiny flashes of revelation- his survival instinct flaring up and demanding recognition. But not fear. Not that bone-quaking terror that has sent many a strong man running. Not that delicious feeling of danger, of reckless abandon as the body struggles to survive.

His hellfire eyes smoldered with anticipation, fixed upon the form of the one who just might teach him to fear. If the Kalona blood in her ran true.

A sudden wind sent his ebony mane into a frenzied dance, charms of tanned hide and bone bleached by the sun rattling furiously against his well-muscled neck. He ignored it all, waiting to see what this ruby-hued mare's next action would be.

Darkfire bared her fangs at the stallion, her tail still thrashing about wildly. Kalona-Darkfire was egging her on in her mind, almost whispering provocation. Unicorn-Darkfire was still silent, not even a presence in her mind any longer; she was gone, at least for the moment.

She began moving now, pacing around the stallion slowly. The sudden breeze ruffled her mane, but she ignored it; the only thing that her mind was focused on being the perverted stallion in front of her.

Kalona-Darkfire's chanting became louder in her ear. Go for the throat, rip out his insides, watch him sufferrrrrr... it repeated excitedly, and once Darkfire grew bored with it, she tuned it out.

"You'd better learn how to fear me quickly," she hissed at him in her unusually smooth voice, her tail striking a nearby tree and slicing a deep gouge through the side. She was in full attack mode, and nothing would get her out of it until she tasted the blood of her enemy. "Because, what's a meal without a challenge?" Her poison-ivy grin deceived her in showing emotion to the stallion; she was excited for this bloody conquest, the chills running up and down her spine a welcome reminder of the chase, the catch, the kill.

"I fail to see why you'd be so stupidly brave after I killed something that obviously caused you discomfort," she continued as she paced, looking away from him and motioning with a taloned wing towards the half-eaten carcass of dead bird. "In my book, that means you owe me." She looked back at him now, her stare cold.

He quirked one delicately-arched brow, dryly amused by her words. "You would rather me turn tail and run?" His eyes remained fixated upon her form, watching as she stalked him in a crude circle. The sound of her tail lashing through the air was almost enough to make him smile.

Running was the last thing on his mind.

"I find it difficult to believe that you would try to call in a debt whose very existence is doubtful- Did you not kill the bird because it annoyed you? Its sudden demise benefited us both- there can be no debt if the deed spawned mutual gratification." He chattered idly, as though he was speaking to an old friend.

His pose was deceptively lackadaisical. His muscles had tensed beneath his skin, ready to spring into action at the slightest charge.

He would not run. Oh, no. He would stay, watching her face twist into the seductive scream of rage... watching as her eyes began to swim with bloodlust... watching. Waiting.

It had been too long since he had felt pain.

Darkfire was sick of hearing the stallion speak. The undertones of his voice, the subtle hint of something that she most definitely did not want to think about, made her almost want to vomit. Instead, the over-powering sense of wanting to kill something reared its beautiful, elegant head.

She inhaled smoothly, her poison-ivy smile and dangerously sharp eyes focused on the stallion. Her body was relaxed, but it wouldn't be for very long; she tucked her wings to her side in anticipation. Her tail continued to thrash, a separate entity from her mind and her body altogether.

When Darkfire was mere feet from the stallion, she heard a familiar voice from the inside of her ear. Now, it commanded. But it wasn't just the Kalona-Darkfire. Both her Kalona and unicorn sides had entwined to create her own voice in her head, and it was beautiful and smooth.

At the last possible second, Darkfire lunged toward the stallion, reaching out for his chest with her taloned wings. One made contact, but only slightly, and she nipped a small bit of skin from his shoulder as she burst by. She stood on the exact opposite side of the circle she had created, a piece of bloodied-shoulder dangling from her sharp teeth. She had a little blood on her lip from his flesh, and she licked it up eagerly.

"A little too sweet for my taste," she said, disgusted.

Kerrigan gave a tiny delighted gasp, thrilled by the sudden pain that washed through his shoulder and banished all thought. A queer glint entered his eyes, an almost maniacal glee causing them to dance like flames stretching towards dried tinder.

He contorted his body, sinewy muscles arcing in almost-impossible curves as he reached towards his shoulder. A shrill cackle welled up from deep inside his lungs as he reached forward with his tongue, sampling the blood that welled and oozed from the gaping wound.

As always, his tongue curled at the unpalatable taste.

He sobered instantly, his body composing itself in a series of well-rehearsed maneuvers. He peered at her with lackadaisical fervor; even the thrill of momentary pain was not enough to make him smile.

"Apples make blood run sweet."
PostPosted: Fri Jul 11, 2008 9:24 pm

Darkfire spat the chunk of shoulder out, smacking her lips uncomfortably as she tried to get the too-sweet taste out of her mouth. If she never tasted his blood again, it would be too soon. Coughing a little, she straightened, her emerald eyes fixed on the stallions'.

Raising a brow, Darkfire did something she was most certainly not expecting; she laughed. Not just a chuckle or a giggle, but a full-on belly-laugh.

"Just my luck," she shouted to the Heavens, looking up at the sky. "That the one thing I want to kill right now is the most repulsive thing I've ever tasted."

She looked back at the stallion now, sizing him up. She had no reason to kill him now, as she would not want his vile-tasting, and even horrid-smelling, blood all over herself. Well, he wasn't going to get away from her to tell the story. But she had another plan...

Seriously? questioned Kalona-Darkfire. Unicorn-Darkfire was still dormant, Darkfire's plan being more sinister than just allowing him to live.

"Tell me," Darkfire began, slowly, almost seductively, moving toward the stallion. "What is your name?"

Kerrigan could not help but feel a twinge of morose satisfaction as she spat out his flesh: She had found no pleasure in sinking her teeth into his flesh- only he had found some small amount of perverse joy.

His eyes raked over her lush ruby-hued form, a flicker of interest flashing in their depths. Why the sudden change of tone? From stalking towards him with barely-restrained bloodlust flashing in her emerald eyes, to moving with a subtle air of grace that was as seductive as it was threatening?

He had not owed her for the bird. He owed her now for his shoulder.

"Kerrigan." his rich voice delivered the name with an air of nonchalance. Would she know the meaning of such a foreign name?
