Aunt Bella and the baby were sleeping, so Carlisle had been sent outdoors to play with the neighbors. Play being the operative term; it seemed to be more like Shigeo throwing a ball towards the street and the boy running to grab the ball before it went in the street. Then Shigeo would make a pass at his boyfriend before throwing the ball (or a new ball, which hadn't had the misfortune to fall in the street) again.

He really wasn't much good at the game. The ball tumbled over the edge of the sidewalk a lot more than Carlisle caught up to it, and sometimes if a throw was careless it would bounce off the top of his head... or his back... sometimes his arms, if he saw it coming, which wasn't often. It was during a lull in the throwing of the ball (while Shigeo attempted to convince Sade that it wasn't necessarily a bad thing to make out in public, and Shigeo's twin sister tried to get Sade to stop listening to Shigeo) when he sat on the low brick wall surrounding the lawn of 19 Black Way that he saw Jahzara. He remembered meeting her in the snowy park, but now it was summer and he was bigger.

So he straightened up and waved enthusiastically. "Hello, Jahzara," he called out, half-rising off the wall from his gloomy contemplation of a neat row of variously sized balls that had gathered over the course of the last half-hour to become a veritable graveyard to attest to his utter ineptitude at sports. "Um... Been a while," he continued with a nervous smile.

The girl in question was skipping along in front of her father, who was carrying bags there were no doubt full of items for the budding youth. Jahzara swung her spotted arms and kicked up her legs, wearing cargo shorts and a spaghetti string tank top, sandals flopping against the sidewalk as she sang a song wordlessly.

Brad, for his part, was following his hellion of a daughter with a mix of annoyance and amusement. The girl was growing fast enough that he was tempted to buy stock in her favorite clothing department, and her energy seemed limitless. His hands and forearms were ladden with the latest testimate to the cat-girls leap in growth, and he could only be thankful that he was well off enough to pay for his Princess. His dark eyes shifted as someone started to wave enthusiastically, seeming to recognize the girl; he slowed his pace, watching quietly.

Zara blinked and stopped her gangly movements to look over to who had called her name. She continued to stare blankly as the person addressing her spoke again. Did she know them? More importantly, was it a boy or a girl? It sounded a little masculine, and that halo looked awfully familiar, but she couldn't quite remember...

Catching sight of the others jarred her memory. She remembered the boy in blue, and...Harper...

"...Carlisle?!" she gawked in shameless amazement. "Is that you?" The spotted girl jogged over to close the distance between them, peering at the youth with wide tangerine eyes. "You look great!" she exclaimed, throwing her arms around his shoulders to give him a hug.

He smiled pridefully at the compliment. "Thanks very much." When Jahzara hugged him, he froze a little (he remembered the neighbor lady grabbing him like that when they first met) but then he returned the hug with interest. Living with Aunt Bella was nice and all, but there weren't a lot of people his age around. It got a little lonely. "You look nice, too! I guess you like summer more than winter." Ha! Math was beyond him, he figured, but other people were not. He swung his legs over the brick wall and stood on the same side as Jahzara.

The mournful line of balls caught his eye and he turned a little pink before bending down to pick them up and tossing them over the wall. "We're supposed to be playing catch," he informed Jahzara. "Except I don't catch the ball very often, and when I tried to throw it back, it went through Sugita-san's maps." He gestured to a pile of paper on the lawn that looked like someone had stomped on it angrily several times. With a depressed look, he sighed.

He turned back to Zara and smiled again. "I guess you were shopping, right?" That hadn't taken too much thought; he could see all the bags on the guy who had be Zara's dad. "We were going to have lunch soon, that's why Sugita-san is inside. Do you want to eat with us... sir?" At the last second, he remembered Brad was there and looked up at him with a slightly more sheepish smile. "If you don't have anywhere else to be," he added. It wasn't like he would be eating alone even if they did decline.

It didn't occur to Jahzara that anyone would be uncomfortable with a hug. Truly, they were one of the coolest things to do on the planet, so why wouldn't folk want one? Especially from someone as cute as her? The female smiled at the explanation, but it was mostly a confused smile. "Catch? With maps? That doesn't seem to work well," she commented, looking over at the tattered remains of what the other had claimed to be a map. "Dad and I play catch too, but we don't use those types of balls." No, they used a football, and only because her father had decided they were less dangerous, somehow.

The cat-girl's face lit up at the mention of lunch. She whipped around and practically leaped onto her father, using her best 'big-eyed-aren't-I-cute?' look on him. "Can we?"

When addressed, Brad shook his head, having finally walked to the same point that the children were. He didn't do so much as flinch as his daughter went from speaking to Carlisle to being attached to his torso. The man looked down at her patiently, as if she had simply done what was normal...and maybe it was. "I'll need to put these in the truck, and I'll need to put more quarters in the meter." He glanced over to the young man, smiling only a bit. "Just Brad kiddo, sir makes me feel my age. If you don't mind, I'll have to pass, or at least be a late date for it. If you'd like Zara to stay, that'd be fine. I can pick her up afterwards."

Jahzara squealed and released her grip on her father, bounding back over to Carlisle and giving him another hug since he was standing upright this time. "Yay! I haven't had lunch with a friend before!" she exlaimed in a sing song voice. To say she was excited was a gross understatement.

"I wasn't supposed to hit the map," he said sheepishly. "I was supposed to hit Shigeo, I guess." He scuffed one foot on the concrete sidewalk, and if he'd had pockets doubtless he would have stuffed his hands in them. As it were, he tucked both hands behind his back and smiled uncertainly at Brad and Zara.

When Brad shook his head, Carlisle's shoulders slumped. "Well, I guess-" But then Zara's dad continued and he perked up almost immediately. This time, his return hug to Zara wasn't delayed at all. "Thank you!" He looked over at Sade (Shigeo had gone inside after getting slapped) and grinned even wider at the solemn nod of acceptance on the man's face. "Sade says that it's alright if you're late," he said to Brad, but quickly turned back to Zara.

"Me neither," he exclaimed right back. "Aunt Bella and Sara and Uncle Astaroshe are sleepin' or busy, but I can introduce you to the neighbors!" He knew it was only polite, as the host, to introduce the other people Zara would be meeting. But it was not nice to drag people. Aunt Bella had given him quite a lecture after he'd dragged his uncle around the house several times, showing him things he was already aware of. So he offered a hand to his friend and smiled.

Brad smiled again, a touch more in earnest as he watched the children. Glancing over to whom Carlisle had indicated, he gave 'Sade' a nod of acknowledgement, remarking, "I'll be back then, shortly. Don't wreak too much chaos," he chided the two lightly before continuing down the sidewalk.

"O~kay da~d!" Jahzara drew out her words, still hugging on the young man. She turned her slitted eyes back onto her companion, nodding enthusiastically. "Okay! I don't mind! I'm just happy to see you again. Gosh you've grown!" she reiterated gleefully, tilting her head to admire his hair and attire. She slid one delicate hand into the one Carlisle had offered to her, squeezing it with great affection. "I hope my hair is as nice as yours when I grow up," she commented off handedly, using her free hand to fuss at her spotted pigtails.

And just as swiftly, the hair was forgotten, and she clasped her friend's hand between both of her own with joy. "So who are your neighbors? We only have downstairs neighbors, we live on the top floor so we get the roof to ourselves, the loft is really nice but I wish we had a house!" Jahzara jumbled all her words together in one pouty huff, sticking out her lower lip to blow some stray strands of hair from her eyes. "I don't get to see many kids," she sulked a bit, clinging to Carlisle that much more.

"I think your hair is really nice," he said honestly, but soon enough he was pulled into the whirlwind of Zara and quite confused as to what he had been meaning to talk about. Neighbors. Right. "I don't see too many kids either. Except baby Sara, but she's asleep." Carlisle led the way over to Sade and took on a rather professorial tone.

"This is Mr. Sade," he said, gesturing to the man (who was wearing a pale pink dress and had ridiculously long, curly blonde hair and all in all looked quite feminine). "It's okay to just call him Sade, though. He doesn't mind." Then he walked inside, kicking off his shoes and waiting until Zara did the same before going into the kitchen. "Hello, Sugita-san." The rather hassled-looking woman nodded stiffly. "This is Zara, my friend. She's gonna have lunch with us, okay?"

Sugita barely looked up, just nodded. "Fine, fine, whatever." Then Carlisle led the way into the dining room and pulled out first Zara's chair, then his. "Sorry about Sugita-san. She's grumpy and sad a lot, but she's really nice. I'll introduce Shigeo and Moriah when they come down, 'kay?" He didn't know what those two did up in Moriah's study and didn't want to know, especially since it seemed to involve a lot of yelling, throwing things, and loud crashing noises.

"Mister Sade?" Jahzara repeated, although the question could have been both as an inquiry of gender or making sure she had his name right. His? Her? Right. "Nice to meet you!" She grinned brightly at the pretty haired man before being lead into the house, slipping off her sandals carefully next to Carlisle's shoes. The young girl beamed at the woman as they were introduced, waving her free hand, "Hi hi Madam Sugita-san!" Jahzara was completely clueless that other cultures might use different names for respect; in fact, she was clueless that Carlisle might have been of another culture at all.

The cat-girl followed the young man with a sweet smile, finally letting go of his hand to take a seat, lacing her fingers together in her lap. "It's okay!" she assured her friend. Leaning over a bit, she whispered loudly, "What's it like to live with so many people?" Jahzara righted herself in her seat again, eyes wide as if the idea of a family was lost on her. "I only have dad, and he says I take up enough room for three people." She was cheerful as she said this, apparently not understanding the meaning behind it.

"You have a nice house," she complimented Carlisle further. She was full of praise for everyone; it was her charm, or her quirk, it could be hard to tell at times. "I bet you're never bored with so many people around."

"Oh, I don't live here, I live next door, it's just, Aunt Bella and baby Sara are asleep, so I can't be inside right now." He smiled at Zara, though, quite happy that she seemed happy. Carlisle could totally see what Zara's dad meant about her taking up enough room for three people. The major difference was, he thought, that this room could use an extra three people in his opinion. Zara was a good group of three, as such groups went.

"Yeah, it's really hard to be bored here. Sugita-san helps me with my reading, and Sade tries to teach me piano but my hands are too small so I'm not very good. Why, do you get really bored?"

Jahzara blinked at Carlisle, wide-eyed. "Oooh," she said knowingly, although she was really quite clueless. He wasn't allowed in his own house when people were sleeping? She'd sure be in a sore spot if she wasn't allowed in when her father was sleeping. Not that she was the most quiet child on the planet to begin with, but still.

The girl pressed her cheek into the palm of her hand, looking as deep in thought as was possible. Her look of consternation was almost downright silly, with her furrowed brows and nibbled bottom lip. "I guess I don't get bored," she said at length, "but it does get kinda lonely. Dad works all the time and he doesn't like it when I find fun things to do." Nevermind that those fun things included climbing the drapes or playing with his Very Important Work Laptop. "So he takes me out to the park or the beach or the mall to have fun!"

She fixed her candy orange eyes on Carlisle, looking momentarily serious again. "My dad is boring. All his games require sitting down. And he wont let me touch his guitar thing." Jahzara treated that as a great offense to her energetic tendancies, although she did occasionally enjoy the video games he showed her. She just preferred to be outside, to...to do things!

"I can be there when we're all sleeping but during the day I have to go out and play," he explained hurriedly, seeing that she didn't seem to get it. He'd accidentally woken up Sara once and after that he didn't want to risk it anymore.

Carlisle shrugged, then smiled. "If you get lonely you can call me," he suggested. "I like to talk on the phone. I talk to Mama all the time on the phone." He tossed his hair over one shoulder, completely innocent of how girly that action made him look. "I dunno, after playing ball with Shigeo I kind of like sitting games." It was kind of a cautious declaration, since he didn't want to offend his friend. "He throws it at my head," he muttered, pretend-sulking for a minute.

He decided he didn't really like this tack. "Do you like pasta salad?"
PostPosted: Tue Jun 03, 2008 10:35 am

She was going to reply, but he flipped his hair, and she was momentarily distracted. It looked so soft and silky, she really wanted to touch it, or brush it! Jahzara was listening, and it was only when he sulked that she realized her hands were tightly clenched and her tail was twitching with mischevious intent, and that she really should be more considerate of her friend. Maybe he didn't like to be touched. It was a ridiculous idea, but it was possible.

"Sitting games aren't all that bad," she ammended hastily. "It's just all he's interested in doing, and that stupid game with fake money and property and stuff is confusing. And stupid." Just in case Carlisle didn't get it the first time, it was a stupid game. That was the extend of expressing her distaste, and so, it was safe to assume Jahzara did NOT like that game. Really, she wasn't fond of board games at all, and it made it worse that Brad bought her these games in hopes she would like them.

"Pasta salad?" she repeated, a little owl-eyed at the sudden change in topic. "Is that like...pasta with leaves?" Jahzara giggled uncertainly. "Dad has made pasta before, and salad, but not together!" She started to giggle harder, trying to imagine the food and producing an image that was far too silly to ever consider eating.

"Monopoly?" Jahzara's dad sounded really cool, actually. He liked Monopoly, especially once all the properties got bought up and you could trade them around. It was his favorite game, even more than that silly game with the air jets and levitating balls. Carlisle smiled, though. That Zara had her own thoughts was a good thing, even if they didn't agree with his.

He giggled, too. Leaves and pasta? That'd be just weird. "It's pasta with Italian dressing in it," he said, feeling knowledgeable. "And tomatoes and cucumbers. Sugita-san taught me to make it." Carlisle smiled happily. He made good pasta salad, yes he did. "It has green and orange and white noodles," he said with an even bigger smile. "Isn't that kinda silly?"
PostPosted: Tue Jun 10, 2008 10:47 am

Jahzara nodded. "Monopoly," she repeated with a dry tone. "It sounds so...adult." Because really, being an adult had to be the most boring thing on the planet. Her round ears twitched as she listened to the description of the pasta, smiling widely. "That sounds really good! Dad doesn't make much Italian, even though it's his...you know...whatever he is." The girl giggled, her focus too narrow to remember the word she wanted to use. It was a good thing Carlisle was smart; she figured he'd get it, even if she didn't.

The cheetah perked immediately at the description of the noodles. "Oh hey! My dad made something with colors like that! Except," she scrunched down in her seat, using her slender fingers try and replicate the shape, "they were curly! And had stuff in them! I don't remember the name, it sounded like tortoise though! It had yummy meats and a really strong sauce." Jahzara was nearly purring again, the first few strains of it heard as she barely rolled her 'r' in 'strong.'

Being a growing girl, she sure liked to eat; as such, Carlisle had immediately hit a soft spot with the exuberant girl. Which brought about the obvious question. "What's for lunch?" she quipped happily. No doubt this Sugita-san would make something delicious! Now if only her father would get his slow butt over...

"Species," Carlisle said cluelessly. "I think it's called a species." Well, cheetahs were a different species than whatever he was, but both he and Jahzara were human, so obviously differences between other humans were species too. Actually, he had a bit of a notion that he might have applied the wrong word to the situation, but he didn't know.

He nodded at her description of the thing her dad made. It sounded really good, but he didn't know what that was called either, so he shrugged. "I like pasta salad. It's really tasty." Nor did he really know what was for lunch, but Sugita-san had been checking something in the oven. "I think it's baked macaroni," he said, thinking. "Or a casserole. Don't worry, though, Sugita-san makes really good casserole." Uncle didn't really like casserole, and the look on Aunt Bella's face when she heard that Carlisle liked it hadn't boded well for her liking it either. And it was always best to cover your bases.

"If you don't like it, we can raid the pantry after," he chirped.
