Kabichi couldn't sleep. The air smelled different-- heavier, angrier. She remembered only one night similar, and she loathed to do so.
Blue, lavender, and white paws moved through darkness, the restless lion moving away from her den, cubs, and mate as she loped out to investigate....
She was no seer, far from it, but she could not shake her feeling of dread; hanging, taunting.
Thus, all she did was move, and hope for the best.

Primitus watched over the land silently, wings shifting in the breeze that carried his scent away.
When he sighted movement, the god-cub's ears pricked forward, and he watched as a mass of blue, lavender, white, and a twinge of green moved below. The lioness moved, scarred under her fur, but on her back was the mark of his granddaughter, the two-colour wings she'd gifted upon her son.
Primitus smiled warmly. The last time the night had felt this still, was the night Solosis tried to destroy his family....

Claws; anger, death came from the rogues as they launched upon the cub. Kabichi screamed as a particularly massive lion launched at her, fangs bared for the kill.
Death never came, however, and the brute was held off by another, whom had launched at the other. Both males were larger than a draft horse; larger than Kabichi imagined. She didn't know who they were, but they were terrible and frightening. The grey-blue mass of fury was struck, before ensuring his opponent would not move again, by removing his throat. This deed done, he turned to the tiny cub, and she saw he had no irises, no pupil, nothing but a kind, golden glow. The male limped close, bleeding....
Kabichi was knocked from her memories when she heard movement and looked up.
She was being watched, a cub curled alone, watching. His eyes shone slightly, and he switched his tail softly. Kabichi blinked; who could leave a cub alone?
A wash of empathy overran the lioness, and she approached, before dropping to a laying position close to him, to look him in the eyes.
"Are you OK lil' guy...?"

Primitus watched Kabichi approach, letting her speak before rising slowly.
She'd grown since that day. The male had to admit that, and while her lithe form and gait were her mother's...
Her eyes were his own son's, killed as he had been that fateful day.
"I am well." The male rose, nuzzling her like an old hand come home. "You've grown."

Kabichi moved back from the cub a bit, rising to her feet rapidly to do so.
Primitus chuckled, but made no moved, simply allowing a wing to shift. The glint of stars made Kabichi blink, noticing them... She hadn't seen them a minute ago. She couldn't have missed them, though... So sharp and large.
What was he?
A look of confusion crossed the female's face, and she studied him suspiciously.
"Who... Are you?"

"I was born when the first leader walked the Earth." Primitus looked up. "I have known of countless leaders, the great and the proud. I have born sons, lived, laughed, died, and come onward to return."
Primitus looked Kabichi in the eyes.
"I was the one whom sired your father, Kabichi. I was-- in but one life-- your grandfather. My name is Primitus.... I only wish I had been there to see you grow."

Kabichi went silent. Her.. Grandfather?
She thought to the night her father, and brother were killed, before looking to Primitus sadly.
"I'm afraid you came too late," Kabichi said softly. "Daddy died... A long time ago."
"I know. I was there. I died along side him."
Primitus looked down.
"Gods.... Are not like mortals. Most often, we die, and reincarnate promptly. I may do so in the place I pass... So long as my essence is not damaged. Destroy it.... And I begin completely anew, with no memory."
He approached, and sighed, leaning.
"I wanted to watch you grow." Primitus confessed. Kabichi went silent.

Kabichi turned, looking away toward her den silently. Primitus moved close, watching as well.
"I hesitated. And I missed it. But know this; your father would be very proud of you. You've done well." Primitus sighed silently.
Kabichi was quiet, before looking to Primitus quietly. She was trying to absorb all of this. Her Grandfather was of the stuff she only heard of in stories, legends.
She'd not expected her own ancestor to be one-- quite opposite. Although a dead grandparent had fit her world views.
Just not this.
"What will you do now?" Kabichi looked up.

Primitus bobbed, shrugging.
"I haven't yet decided."
He didn't admit he wasn't sure-- not without the majority of his followers. Not to mention, he was still a cub; and picked off by predators quite easily, not to mention any of his brother's so-called followers. The latter wasn't a pleasant idea, and he'd hoped sticking near Kabichi's mother would help remedy it, but, it hadn't-- not with her own cub to tend to.
Kabichi looked to Leadership silently, watching his face, then looked ahead, ear flicking.
"You... Could stay with us a while. I'll think of something to tell Shin...."
Primitus glanced up. Kabichi's tone had been reluctant-- he knew the tone when he chose a leader, and he smiled.
"I would... Appreciate that." He smiled slightly. Slowly, his wings faded, hidden from view, and kabichi bent, lifting the god-cub by the ruff, marvelling at how large he was-- she almost couldn't lift him!- and the lioness padded to her den.
She'd tell Shin something. He just wouldn't believe what Primitus was.
And she barely did herself.
