Like a Kid in a Candy Store Players We`rika & Sevvie, Alistair Greenwitch Settings Sistine candy store, Durem; warm summer day --- Oh, it was glorious! Sevilin's little hands glided over the pristine glass of a small shop in Durem. He looked like a pig flattened by a steam roller with his face pressed against the cold window pane, his hyperactive breathing leaving foggy clouds around him. Eventually the little frei tore his face from the glass and looked for We`rika who was up the next block, clearly not going to wait for him. "Werika!" Goddamnit. They were almost to the truck and Sevilin had to pipe up. Maybe if he-- "Werika! Oh my gosh! It's incredible! There's... They have! Oh gosh, just come here!" Words just couldn't describe the awesome and so he latched onto his guardian's hands and pulled as hard as he could, fortunately the Huichol was being pretty compliant today. He led him back to the magical shop, pointing at the shiney through the window. "...... Ugh fine, bu' dun think I'mma buy--" Sevilin had wandered in long before We`rika had finished talking. The door announced the little raevan's entry with a soft tinkle from the entrance bell. His big blue eyes enveloped his face as he gaped at all the sugary sweet glittering goodness. "Ohhhh my...." His hands itched to fondle everything. We`rika came in moments later, moody with his ears pulled back against his skull. He could sense the tension in the room as Sevilin decided which piece hold. "Oh please Sev'lin dun touch anythin'! This looks espensive..."

"Not all of it is," a voice from the back piped up, followed moments later by a head of dusty blond hair poked around the doorframe behind the counter. "Hallo. Welcome."
The man was much too big for the small, delicate shop. His grin and his apron were lopsided, pulled sideways by a splash of dark chocolate across the latter, and the thin, white scar that marred the former. "Mostly just what's the size of you is a little on the pricey side."
Alice paused at the sight of the little frei, blinking once. Well he had certainly seen his fair share of interesting citizens in his day, but the pretty, floating creature was a new one.

"Excellent," Sevilin approved absently as he surveyed the pieces critically, fingers steepled in front of his face.
We`rika closed the door behind him, conscientious of where he stepped or what he touched. He didn't need to start a tab in this place by accidentally assaulting a shelf with his face and toppling the sugary artwork.
Jesus Christ!
He gawked vulgarly at the man behind the counter. People weren't allowed to grow that big, he was pretty sure it was a rule in nature or the bible or somewhere. Goddamn. We`rika wondered if he was from prison or something, widdling the hours away weight lifting. He looked like a butcher who chopped people up in the back, except for that smile. Hmmm, maybe he was a *****. Something about this man made him tingle in the unsexy way.
"Do you have any sugar fishes? Or or like a dolphin!?" The raevan floated over to the counter, looking up at the giant man. "Wow, you're big..."

The tall man chuckled. "I get that alot." he confided, then leaned back as if in deep thought. "Fish? Well... lets see. No sugar fish, but there should be some mermaids down that way." He offered a gesture in a vaguely 'left' fashion along the walls. "And I think we might have some chocolate dolphins, too."
Straightening up again the ex-cop looked over the boy's (he thought it was a boy,) companion curiously. He had long, elven ears. And if his worked at all like Custard's, the man wasn't too happy about something.

"Mermaids?" Seviln's world exploded in epic glee. He followed the man's direction as best he could, his long hair whipping in the air like a flag as he darted here and there to find these mermaids. "Ohhhh..." They were so pretty and he had a blue one! EEEE!! "We`rika I want this one!"
"Wai' wai' who said..." We`rika paused, making sure never to turn his back on this "shop owner" and waddled his way over to Sevilin.
"But I want it...."
We`rika sighed. "Fine. Which one did ya wan'?"
"I want this o--" Sevilin's eager hands accidentally tipped the fragile mermaid over. He gasped loudly, completely freezing up as he watched it fall.
Thankfully, We`rika was a little more quick on the draw and caught it before it could shatter and he had to pay for pieces of sugar and probably get suckered into buying another one because Seveilin cried. "Gah, Sev'lin be more caref--"
"OH MY GOSH!!! What are those?!" The sea fairy was off to another side of the shop, staring at a swimming thing that was bright orange. "Hello!" He started right on gossiping with the sea slug as We`rika skulked over to the clerk, presenting him with the sugar piece and his credit card.
"........... Ring this up please...."

Alice leaned over to watch the excitable little thing talking at his fish tanks. It made him chuckle again as he pulled back, offering the hassled looking man before him a friendly smile. If he noticed the distrust radiating from nearly every pore of the Huichol in front of him, he didn't say so.
Taking the delicate replica in careful hands he turned, finding a small, gold lamme box among the shelves behind the counter that was about the right size for a blue-tailed mermaid.
"That's Phestion you're chatting with," he told the boy without taking his eyes from his work. "He's a bit lazy but-"
Something about the happy chatting gave Alice sudden pause. It almost sounded like the strange, cheerful ward was actually having a conversation, rather than practicing the one sided babble so common among the English-speaking to animals.

"Yeah," Sevilin turned back to look at the clerk, his red lips pulled into a bright smile. "That's what Phestion said, Alice..." The little frei resumed foggy up the sea slugs's tank. "Are you lazy?" ... Really? He doesn't seem mean..."
We`rika didn't even bother to listen to his son's ramblings, too used to his talks with random sea creatures. Though at the mention of the man's name, the huichol's ears perked up in vivid interest. He didn't even bother to hide the smirk that tugged at his lips. "Yer name's Alice?"

"Me?" The thought that one of his nudibranchs had called him mean worried him a little. Maybe he didn't spoil them enough- ....Wait a minute.
Alice blinked over at the dark man in front of him. He ... hadn't mentioned his name. Was that boy actually...? He had to be. How... ********' cool.
The ex-cop blinked again, his mind suddenly back on the present. "H-uh? Oh. Yeah." He smiled. "Yeah, it is."

"I think it's just mad you called him lazy..." Sevilin confided behind a cupped hand, giggling quietly. "Wha--? I'm on you're side!" He tapped the glass gently. "If you're going to be sassy I'll go talk to someone else..."
We`rika nodded slowly, thoroughly amused. A strange man with a strange name. The pieces were all falling into place.
"Where did you get all the uhmm sea cucumbers?" The little blue frei tapped his short nails on the counter, floating close beside his guardian.

"Oh, from all over." Alice nodded to himself, watching the petite reavan with interest. "Most of them from specialty breeders. They're delicate, so purchasing them can be tricky." The tall man rubbed the back of his neck when he'd finished tying the soft red ribbon about the golden box. "You... really talked to them, didn't you?"

Sevilin's blue eyes grew twice their size and glazed over at the word purchase.
We`rika's eyes grew too but in a more terrified for his credit card and house payments kind of way. He pulled the box back against his chest, tapping the box idly with his claws. "Yeah, he's a sea fairy so he can uhh talk to any sea... things...."
The Raevan nodded excitedly, eager to be a part of any conversation that revolved around him. "Really? You can buy them?! Ohh they're so cool!!" Sevilin didn't even need to ask it. He closed his mouth into a straight diplomatic line and looked up at his guardian.
"No..." He was well prepared. "I jes bough' ya a sugar thing and now ya wan' a floating rug? Ya can go find one th' nex' time we go ta th'sea mmmkay?" He dug out his credit card and handed Alice the plastic and his license, watching the clerk very carefully.

Alice held up his hands with a smile. "It's alright. On me this time." To Sevilin he nodded. "You can buy them," he agreed. "But they're very fragile little creatures. They take a lot of effort to care for, so they eat up most of your time making sure they're alright. It's kind of like adopting a small, squishy kid, y'know?" He chuckled. "But you're welcome to come and visit the ones here whenever ya like. Saves you and your dad the work, right?"

We`rika hummed appreciatively but suspicious as he placed his cards back in his wallet and into his jean pocket. He gently slid the pretty golden box over to Sevilin to hold, but apparently he had no intention of leaving yet.
"Okay! I'd love to!" The sea fairy beamed like a scalding ray of sunshine, unphased by the fact that they lived a little too far away to make this shop a daily routine.
"So how long been... a candy maker, Alice...?" The huichol ignored his ward, far too busy getting to the bottom of this ***** ring. He would crack this nut!

The question gave the big man pause. He frowned as he considered it, absently reorganizing the array of golden boxes packed along the shelves. "Well, professionally, only about two years."
With a smile he turned back to his customers, rubbing the back of his neck in goodnatured embarassment. "But probably about twenty years."

Oh, so now they were calling it 'professional' these days! There were some serious sickos out there. We`rika's eyes narrowed into dark slits as he linked arms with Sevilin protectively.
"Only two years? Where did you make candy before!?"
"Yeah, did ya sell i' ou' of a van?" He was suddenly very interested again, fingers interlaced as he leaned on the counter happy to hear a little more.
