She rushed as well as she could under the burden of her three instruments and the orb. Which is to say she didn't rush much at all. The load was not only heavy but awkward too. She had forgotten all about her books.
She pushed herself into her room and dropped her instruments with slightly less care than she normally gave. Her room mate, as usual, wasn't there. Her room mate pretty much lived in her boyfriend's dorm. Amie set the orb down on her pillow and plopped herself onto her bed, lying on her tummy and gazing into the orb. "Cuuuuuuuuuuuute" she said again. The colors weren't entirely static, but they didn't swirl or change. It was like they shimmered.
She reached over and grabbed a care bear -- Tenderheart Bear. "Meet your new friend," she said to the bear.
Then the orb moved.
Amie blinked, unsure of what she had seen. Had she imagined it wiggling there. But then it wiggled again, managing to get itself out of the small depression and roll closer to the bear, where it stopped. "Omigosh!" Then, "so CUTE!" She made the stuffed bear pat the orb, and it started to hum.
It was then that she noticed the envelope on her desk. She got up carefully, makign sure the orb didn't fall and she went to the desk. The letter was in a brown envelope, apparently hand-made. "To Amie" it said on the front in elegant calligraphy.
She carefully opened it, not wanting to damage the letter. She pulled out the single piece of paper, which held words in the same handwriting.
letter
I know you are lonely, so I give you this orb. Please take care of him and help him grow.
-Jareth
"Him, then," she said out loud. She moved back to the bed, still holding the letter in one hand. "You will, grow, huh?" said it softly, reaching out to stroke the orb with her free hand. "I should name you then." The orb seemed to press against her hand. It was warm to the touch. "I'll call you Bonnie," she said finally. "That's a cute name."
