Note: this portion of Ynisbetryn's background was written by Aldessa/d e s s a b u n n e h. I felt I should keep it for continuity's sake

Ynisbetryn was born the youngest daughter of a high priestess of Albion. She showed nothing remarkable and was expected to grow up to be nothing more than a lower order priestess, possibly married off to a chieftain for a political alliance. Even less was thought of her when she spent her time learning swordplay and warcraft with the boys of the nearby castle. But when she entered adolescence she became subject to trances, revealing prophecies and wisdom from the Goddess that she should never have known. Some of it seemed apocryphal, but it was clearly holy speech.

Then her eight sisters began to fall ill, dying of horrible but unrelated diseases. There was some talk among the temple of Ynisbetryn plotting their death, but her mother absolved her. Ynisbetryn spent this time of her life terrified. She was worried she would catch a sickness as well. She was worried that she would be punished by the people for harming her sisters when she was innocent. And most of all she feared the visions. They had to do with a dragon, a spear and a chalice. The dragon was usually wounded by the spear in the thigh, his blood falling into the chalice. Then his thrashings in his pain would destroy the land, toppling mountains, crushing castles, tearing up forests.

Finally, when she was seventeen, her last sister having died a month before, her mother caught ill. Huge boils formed on her legs and arms. Her skin turned grey and sagged. Her eye sockets seemed hollow, and her breath smelled of rot. Her hair fell out and her fever seemed ready to set her skin aflame. Ynisbetryn wept and prayed to the Goddess for days, but in the end, her mother died, screaming. The counsel ratified Ynisbetryn's ascension to High Priestess almost before her mother was in the grave.

She shut herself in the temple alone for a week, fasting and drinking nothing during the time. When she emerged, she seemed to glow with power. She was in a trance, her arms held to the sides, wearing only a diaphanous robe that clung to her body. She began to speak with the power of the Goddess, but her words seemed blasphemous. She advocated alliance with the the Christians, both politically and religiously. Their beliefs were but sides of the same coin, she said. Though she spoke with power and authority, her people could not take it, and they threw her from the commune.

That is when she met the Merlin.

The Merlin was spoken of in hushed tones in Albion, but respectful tones. He was a man, and therefore not allowed, but they knew he held magnificent power from gods and men. He alone believed her, for he had suffered similar dreams. He vowed to obey Ynisbetryn in all things, but advised her to secrecy. She took his advice, and together they began to alter the future of the world.

Merlin took Ynisbetryn to a grotto formed in the midst of massive crystalline growths. There were pinks, greens, blues, reds, purples. When the sun shone high overhead it penetrated and scintillated through the crystals, scattering rainbows and patches of color everywhere.

The Merlin began schooling Ynisbetryn in his arts, but she was a poor student. she could not learn the mystic arts. Her powers came from the Goddess. It was wisdom and insight that governed her. At length they came to realize that they were symbiotic. Neither could use all the powers, but together they could forge a plan to make Briton the greatest kingdom in the world.

They planned a birth. The birth of a boy, descended from Joseph of Arimathia, a possessor of the birthright to rule, but schooled, and trained. Not in the powers of mysticism, or the goddess, but taught wisdom, leadership, and kindness.

And as they planned, Ynisbetryn fell in love for the first time. She believed the Merlin did too. And as they discussed the future of Briton, she thought they would have their own future. She gave herself to him, bodily, completely.

The plans were shown to be flawed soon after they put them in motion, however. The power of the Goddess and Merlin's mystic powers kept them both from aging as they directed the course of kings. Veris, Ambrosius, and finally Ungrith. Ungrith himself was nearly as bad as the selfish warlords that had preceded the unification of Briton, but he would father a boy who would rule in glory and the right. It was the siring where things fell apart.

There was betrayal, death, adultery, and deception in his conception. When the Merlin returned from his mission that night, Ynisbetryn learned it all, and she fell into his arms, sobbing.

But things seemed to go better. He was taught service and labor under Sir Ector, a rustic but good hearted knight. He was taught friendship and brotherhood with Ector's son, Kay. Loyalty was his hallmark, justice his creed. He was Arthur, the future king of the Britons.

By the time Arthur was a young man, learning the chivalric arts, Ynisbetryn had managed to mostly forget the murders and betrayals that led to his conception. She kept herself busy keeping the chaos of Briton under control. Uther had died soon after fathering Arthur, and with no clear heir, every petty baron from Hadrian's Wall to Cornwall tried to assert authority. The nobility was serving its own interests, warring with each other, and the people of Briton were the ones who suffered -- their crops burned, their women raped, and their children impressed into the soldier's life. The Woads from north of the Wall crossed nearly every day and Saxon raiding along the coasts was unchecked.

So it was that she didn't notice when the Merlin came to her bed less often. Nor did she even realize that he had started to train a new apprentice -- one extremely gifted in the Arts, but unbridled by the interests of mankind. Morgaine was Arthur's half-sister, and would prove to be a problem later.

Ynisbetryn knew nothing of the Merlin's infidelity, however, and was merely relieved when Arthur came of age and finally pulled Excalibur from the stone. She had forged the sword herself, giving it the power to cut through any object. It was the ultimate expression of power in Briton, and no one could doubt that this meant Arthur was the high king.

Unfortunately, it didn't stop some kings, such as King Lot of Lothian in the north or King Mark of Cornwall in the south, from giving war. Yet Arthur was victorious as these battles began, so it was not of grave concern to Ynisbetryn until Morgaine seduced the king.

Furious to learn that Morgaine had learned the arts which she had used to seduce Arthur from the Merlin, Ynisbetryn raged. She was finally soothed, however, when she could find no hurt in what had been done. Arthur still retained Excalibur, and he continued to solidify his rule -- even when Morgaine married his most ardent opponent: Lot.

With Arthur's rule solidified, a golden age began -- the Age of Camelot. A man of any station was safe to travel where he would. There was justice and mercy tempering each other. With Ynisbetryn's aid, Merlin now made Clarent -- Excalibur's complement and the sword of peace. It aided Arthur's already great wisdom and was used for knighting ceremonies.

Then the peace was shattered. Sir Balin, the Knight of Two Swords, slew his host, violating the oldest law of civilization. As he had been taught and sworn oaths to uphold Arthur's law, it was a betrayal most bitter. Worse was his escape unpunished. Nearly overnight the kingdom was in upheaval again -- try as he might, Arthur could not enforce justice in Camelot.

Ynisbetryn consulted with the Merlin, and when they were in agreement, sent him to Camelot to tell Arthur there was only one solution: he must send his knights to retrieve the Holy Grail.

Amie left her class under the burden of several instruments. Lemmy, her 12-string guitar was held by the handle of its case in her left hand. On her back she had strapped a cello. Her left arm held up a French horn. The cello bumped slightly as she walked. step. step. bump. step. step. bump. step. step. bump. She wondered if it was going to bruise her posterior and if so, if she'd be able to stand.

She was halfway to the dorm building when she remembered she'd left her books. She turned and looked back, not wanting to make the journey. She sighed and sat down on a bench, heavily. Gently placing her instruments beside her, she buried her face in her hands and nearly cried. "I wish I had a friend," she whispered.

Just then she noticed a glimmer in the tall grass near her. A flash of pink. She leaned to investigate, then lost her balance and fell to the ground, her limbs going everywhere. She lay on the ground taking stock of her situation when she heard a whistle of appreciation. She blushed, realizing her skirt was up, exposing her panties. She quickly yanked it down and got to her knees, tears actually coming now, one falling down her cheek.

She remembered the pink object and looked closer. It was... a ball. No. An orb would be a better word. She gently touched it. It seemed to be made of something glass like. The image of a flower floated in the center. Her eyes went wide, her exhaustion and embarrassment forgotten. "cuuuuuuuuuuute." she whispered.
