Mariana is the capital of the Marquis Federation, an alliance of planets that has resisted the expansionist ways of the Dojourian Empire, even though many of the planets had been colonized by planets from the Empire. The Marquis Federation was first established as a constitutional republic, however, over the years, the Marquis government degenerated from a republic into a monarchy, and then into a dictatorship. Following the collapse of the Dojourian Empire and the rise of the Galactic Federation, dissent in the Marquis Federation began to build. When the Premier refused the armistice offered by Head of State Tahiri Veila Panjirinanu and committed the entire navy to battering the Galactic Federation's far superior armada, the decision was solidified. Though it took some time, the heads of the Armed Forces and the Navy conspired with several politicians to overthrow the Premier and his warmongering government. In one magnificent battle, the Premier's forces were crushed, the Premier was arrested on crimes against existence and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility for parole. Once the transitional government was in place, its leaders dispatched the entire Marquis Navy, along with the government's representative Fleet Admiral Heinrich von Nietzsche. The Fleet Admiral negotiated with the Galactic Federation's Fleet Admiral, and the Marquis Federation became a member state of the former, with Mariana remaining the Marquis Federation's capital.
