Pales was carrying the naga in his arms up the stairs. They could have gone up the handicap ramp but the toddler seemed uncertain about it, her young mind not quite grasping the idea that she wouldn’t slide downward like on the slides at the park. So one hand cling to the cloth of the one-eyed man’s shoulder while her other hand possessively clamped onto the fleece of the little ram-plush she now carried everywhere.
“Mama? What is that?” Kaveri asked nodding to the building from which banners hung displaying today’s special exhibit.
Pales smiled a bit, “A museum. We are going to look at an exhibit of the human body.”
“Oh.” The toddler replied softly her honey colored eyes staring at the entrance, “What is a museum?”
The man bit his lip in regret of starting this line of questioning. Once she started now-a-days she just couldn’t seem to bring herself to stop, “A large place with many things in it for people to look at. Sometimes there is new stuff and sometimes old, usually a mixture of those things and people learn from them.”
Pales was beginning to doubt his choice of bringing her to this particular exhibit. For one she might not understand and for another it would either traumatize her or fascinate her, he hoped for the latter.

It had been Francine who had first suggested this parody of quality mother-son time. "Oh, look! A special exhibit on bodies!" she had said, and for once, Alek hadn't immediately written her off or laughed at the suggestion. He had actually seemed excited, and when Alek wanted to do something, it pretty much got done, especially when he secretly whipped out that stupid lute. One minute Dixie was sitting there watching TV and the next, she heard some soft melody coming from Alek's room and had an uncontrollable urge to go to the damn museum.
"Okay, where are the bodies?" Alek asked. He attempted to subtly shift his hand out of Dixie's grip while her eyes were elsewhere, but it didn't work. She squeezed harder and Alek grimaced.
"Everywhere, I guess," Dixie replied. She gestured over at a sign just past the entrance, a few steps from where they were standing. It had a large, pink brain on it. The brain was speaking. She might have had more to say about brain color and the feasibility of one actually growing a mouth, but she didn't want to upset Alek. "See?"
But Alek wasn't looking at the sign. His eyes were glued to the small snake person who was being carried into the building. "Hey, look!" he said, pulling Dixie's hand in earnest this time and succeeding in dragging her over to the door. There was no harm in just looking at the little girl through the glass, even if it was a bit creepy.

Perhaps it was the voice she heard or it was because she just so happened to peep over her shoulder as she was carried into the building or possibly something about the boy pointing after her just caught her attention just as much as she had caught his and she pointed back at him, momentarily releasing the shirt she had gripped in her fingertips. “Look, Mama, that boy is pointing.” Kaveri announced matter-of-factly stating the obvious.
“Mm? What?” Pales held the door open with a leg in order to peer at what his daughter was pointing out, mostly just humoring her, “huh, so he is. Let’s go inside now.” The man was seemingly oblivious to the fact that the boy was pointing at them and now dragging his guardian over.
“It’s not nice to not wait for them when they are comin’ over.” She said sulkily as her hand moved to reclaim the bit of cloth she had held earlier tugging at it to get her guardian to stop just long enough to greet the pair heading toward them. The nagi obviously had her own idea of good etiquette, official or not.

Alek continued dragging his mother along, eventually coming to plod slowly a few feet behind the man and his child. He had stopped pointing, but he was still staring at Kaveri's lack of legs, despite the giant, room-sized heart that loomed ahead. He hopped forward, like an eager goat, straining the tether of Dixie's arm, and dared a wave at the naga girl.
"Hey!" he said by way of greeting. "Your tail is awessssome!"

She beamed a smile at the boy and waved back, so far so good. As the boy complimented her tail, the tip wriggled a bit as if it had a mind of its own and happy to have been acknowledged for its greatness. Kaveri giggled and strained against her father’s grasp wishing to be set down so she could get a look at the boy on her own level. She wanted something to compliment on the boy in return. “Thank yoo’! You ‘ave nice ...”
Pales glanced at the parent in tow and gave a quick uncertain smile, “Hi, I’m Pales,” he introduced himself as he set his daughter down, might as well get to know the other parent now that they were stuck hovering in the doorway. He’d have introduced his daughter but she seemed to take offence to that now that she knew how to talk a bit.
Now down at her own level her tail curled about a bit to help support her standing as she stared at the boy and her gaze fell upon his eyes. The horn-thing were pretty nifty but she liked the eyes the best, “You ‘ave ...ummm..awessssooommmeee eyes!” she tried out the word he blurted at her to compliment her. It was indeed very fun to say!

"Thanks!" Alek said almost immediately. He had never been complimented by a girl before, and that's what this kid was, even if she didn't have any legs. He found he liked her words more than he imagined he might. "I don't know why they're black all around. I tried to wipe it off, but it didn't work. I'm Alek!"
"Dixie," the yellow woman replied. She returned Pales' smile, but it was closed-lipped and seemed somehow barely used. "Nice to meet you." She reached for the hand she had dropped in all the Kaveri-on-the-floor excitement and said, "We should go in the heart now, Alek. I'm sure your friend would like to go too."

“No! It should stay, makes you look ... Handsome.” Kaveri nodded decisively.
The nagi tilted her head as she listened to the boy’s name, “Ah-lehk.” She tested it out but it sounded almost round, “Alek!” Kaveri announced happily. “My name Kaveri.” She introduced herself. There were unnoticeable gaps in her speech, words missed that she felt were unimportant to slip in or she just plain forgot in her excitement of meeting the boy.
“Pleased to meet you as well, Dixie,” Pales responded with a small nod. He glanced down at the children and then nodded with agreement with the other parent. Obviously he didn’t seem uneasy by Dixie’s appearance which was good, right? “Yes, let’s not hover in the doorway.”
Kaveri glanced at her father with a small frown, “We can still talk with ‘em right?”
The man nodded bending to pick her up which she refused with a small hiss and turning her torso in such a way it came out of the man’s grasp. Pales sighed, “May I at least hold your hand?”
The nagi paused a moment before consenting by lifting up a small hand causing the bracelets she wore there to jingle softly. Hand-in-hand Pales and his child entered first since there were in the process of it already, leaving Dixie and Alek to follow suit.

Handsome? Alek grinned at Kaveri. "Don't worry," he said in a conspiratorial whisper, "We can still talk even if they say no."
Dixie smirked ever so faintly at Alek's declaration. "Sorry about that," she said in Pales' direction. "He thinks he can do whatever he likes." The alien's tone clearly indicated what she thought about that, or at least what she thought about it until Alek grew larger than she was. The hand she had offered her charge had been swiftly ignored, so Dixie dropped it back to her side, glancing around at the decorations and displays as she lagged behind the others.
Alek hurried over to the side of Kaveri that wasn't claimed by her guardian's hand. "What's there to see first?" he asked.

Kaveri couldn’t help but giggle softly at the whisperings of Alek. The boy seemed so ... So rebellious! It was rather refreshing after in a house filled with obedience and the like. She found she was warming quite nicely to the boy. “Yeah!” she called out in agreement, not quite grasping the idea of having to whisper back. Besides it seemed as if the parents they were ‘rebelling’ against had heard.
The man looked at Dixie laughing a bit and nodded, “Indeed, some children seem to think that way no matter what is done.” The tall man had stopped a bit to hold his daughter’s hand it would become an issue. Pales tilted his head at the boy, “If you guys stay in sight, mind holding onto my daughter’s hand so she doesn’t stray off?” it seemed like a very suitable solution.
The nagi looked around and a free hand pointed over to the large foot that entered into the human body exhibit, “We go in there?” it was a question answering Alek’s question ... Kind of. She didn’t mind having to hold hands with people so long as she could walk—er slither along on her own.

Alek looked up at Pales and his excited grin turned to a genuine smile. "Yeah!" he said, reaching out to grab Kaveri's other hand. "Um... no, I mean I don't mind!"
He looked over at the foot. Well, that was interesting. "Mmm hmm," he agreed. "Let's go!" Normally he would have just run off, but in this case that would have meant dragging Kaveri along, which would might have been considered rude. Instead he matched his pace to hers, the bounce in his step awfully similar to skipping. It was foot time!
Dixie nodded, hopefully pitching her voice low enough so the children wouldn't hear. "It's not that I don't care, but the only way he's going to learn anything is through experience. He hasn't seriously listened to me since he came out of that stick anyway."

Pales was honestly surprised. He had expected the boy to reject the idea entirely, but it was a pleasant surprise and so the man gave a smile in return, “You take good care of her!” he called after them as Kaveri simultaneously let go of his hand and clasped hands with Alek as she slithered as quick as her tail would let her after the boy had grasped her hand.
“Yeah!” Kaveri chimed in to Alek’s enthusiasm and amazingly ended up keeping pace with the boy as he skipped beside her.
The one-eyed man glanced at Dixie as she spoke in a lowered pitch and grinned faintly and shrugged, “I am sure he may settle down with age,” he said in the same lowered pitch trying to offer some type of consolation. “Some boys are like that, in general, or so I hear. I was never like that myself, but...” Pales murmured thoughtfully as they walked after the children a head of them.

He led them to the foot's entrance, watching as a pair of kids ran in ahead of them. Alek continued inside, noticeably calmer now that they were actually exploring. He walked forward, up what was presumably a leg, until he reached a fork in the body. "Which way now?"
Dixie nodded but otherwise kept silent on the matter. She probably seemed like some cold-hearted b***h to this man she had only just met. When they too had reached the foot, she asked, "Should we follow?" The opening was more on the child-sized end of the spectrum, but they would certainly fit, if they were so inclined.

Kaveri moved along side her new found friend at a peaceful slither. Thankfully a lot of the body was made up of ramps instead of stairs or else it would make things a little difficult, "Uhhhh...That way!" She chirped pointing two the left side of the fork.
Pales crossed his arms over his chest thoughtfully and stared at the entry way and then up the length of the exhibit and seemed to consider the question put to him before replying, "I think the kids will be fine alone in there. They have staff on hand if anything goes wrong and we'll wait at the other end."
If there were any sick perverts in there it was most likely they were of the smallish variety and easily quashed, or at least that was the one-eyed man's reasoning.

Dixie nodded. "Agreed," she said. The thought of traversing narrow corridors through simulated human insides hadn't really been that appealing to her.
Up ahead, Alek saw a bright sign that read heart. As they approached, he saw that the lights inside were beating like he imagined lights in a real heart might, if there were lights in a heart! "Hey look!" he said to Kaveri. There was some sort of low booming sound as well, and Alek could feel the ground shaking a little. "Wanna come inside with me?"

The two adults agreed upon something and thus Pales shifted his weight a bit before moving forward, “Think the end is over here somewhere.” He said lightly as he began to lead the way.
The vibrations of the fake organ bothered the small girl a little mostly because she could feel it reverberate up along her tail and into her spine and it was a very, very odd sensation. She put on a brave face and nodded, “Yeah! It’ll be fun, right?” Kaveri trusted that Alek would protect her if something bad happened.
