Volatile Rainbow

My eight month-old son has recently picked up the strangest habit, seemingly out of nowhere. He stands up, anchors himself firmly to the nearest piece of furniture, and starts to shake his head violently. It begins as an exaggerated "NO!" motion, and then he loses the pattern and starts to move his head in an orbiting fashion. He does this until he makes himself so dizzy that he falls on his butt--but he continues until he's so disoriented that he falls onto his back. Then he lays there, recooperates, stands up, and does it again. He's been doing this for about a month.

So my question is: Does anyone else have a baby that does this? I've asked numerous mothers I'm friends with, and they all say their kids never did anything like this. I've tried researching online, and found nothing. I'm planning on asking our pediatrician at his next appointment, but that's not for another month.

Is this something I should be concerned about, or is my kid just a weirdo? Any thoughts, opinions, or experiences are, of course, appreciated.

Also, awhile ago I posted a different issue in the Parenting Q&A subforum and got no responses. I'm thinkin' no one checks the subforums anymore, but take a look at "Help!" and see what you could offer me for that issue, too. sweatdrop

that is certainly not a normal behavior. I would call the pediatrician and ask ahead of time, rather than waiting for the appointment. I don't want to freak you out or anything, but yeah. That is weird.

Violent head shaking and banging is perfectly normal... but your kid seems to have taken it to the extreme.

Well, the doc said it is normal, and that not all babies do it but I have nothing to worry about. He's just exploring being dizzy, I guess--he thinks it's hysterically funny.

@Rocky: The top two teeth were the worst for Dorian. He was so miserable. sad

Vol: Alice got 6 teeth at once >.< the top 6 teeth just all came down at once, I'm just waiting on the last top two (the canines uhg) to cut and hopefully once they've cut, mommy and daddy can get sleep again u.u

Alice has taken to rocking back and forth as a command to get a move on....She's WAY WAY WAY too communicative for her age >.< god, she's such a smartie pants >.<

Kyra used to have spasms involving head shaking, though not as bad as that. She'd just suddenly stop what she was doing and would shake her head, and her body would usually follow for about 10 seconds. She's not done it in months now, though her health visitor was worried about it when she saw her do it. She was fine nothing wrong though, but it's always something to have checked. Especially if it could possibly endanger them in any way.

Ive seen this before with my friends baby. It might not be with your child, but my friends child kept shaking his head very violently which ended up being a seizure's. I hope this isn't happening to your little bundle hope everything is well. I'm a parent so I know you have to be concerned in certain things especially when it comes to violent shaking. I'm glad your child is just doing this as for curiosity.
