User ImageApple was walking through the forest, his eyes looking up at the trees and what they held. Small apples were beginning to form. A smile tugged at the corners of the stallion's mouth. There was no time like summer. All the foals were out and about and apples were coming to be the perfect treats.

His grin slowly appeared and his grey eyes looked around for a possible apple ready for the picking. None were ready yet. Oh well, he'd find a ton soon enough.

Vara walked cheerfully through the forest. Spring and come and though the flowers on the trees were gone the fruits would soon be ripened. It was a beautiful time of year. It was a time of transition, of birth. Birth was the reason she was out today. Her son, Hayagriva, had been blessed with foals and she was on her way to see her grandchildren. Some mares might bemoan their loss of youth at becoming a grandmother but not Vara. To her, becoming a grandmother was just as much of a joy as becoming a mother had been.

It was with this cheerfulness that she greeted the stallion that she saw amongst the apple trees. With the pattern on him he seemed half an apple himself. "Hello there," she said as she approached. "Good afternoon!"

Apple's eyes darted over to the mare that spoke. His ears flicked forwards and a friendly smile appeared on his muzzle. "Why hello there! Yes, it is a lovely afternoon." He hadn't been expecting to run into someone while on his walk. His eyes looked around for anyone that might be following her, but no one was there. He let his eyes then rest on the interesting colored mare. He too had children, but they were both now mares and none had grandchildren, or none that he knew about. His grey eyes looked at the mare's blue ones.

The sweat scent filled Apple's lungs as he took in a deep breath. The fresh green grass and apples were both combined to create the most perfect scent. The tips of his long tail laid on the ground as he awaited the mare to speak again.

Vara had always enjoyed meeting new people unexpectedly. It was how she had met her mate, after all. This one seemed like a cheerful sort too, always a pleasant bonus. She smiled again and inclined her head at the greeting.

"It's a bit too early for apples, unfortunately..." Her eyes twinkled with amusement. "Except perhaps for the ones that you have patterned upon you. But those are not for eating, only a reminder of what's yet to come." She found it remarkably, the array of designs that she had seen on other soquili. The apples on this fellow and the array of patterns on herself was a testament to the artistic brush of the gods, in her opinion.

His ears perked at the female's voice. He didn't want to miss a single word and seem rude. The stallion's eyes looked at the trees then back at her and he nodded a little.

"Very unfortunate that they are not out." He said with another small nod. "No, they are not for eating." A chuckle escaped him as he thought of the black and orange stallion that tried to eat them by accident. His eyes fell on her markings. What were the gods thinking when they created her? Her markings were extremely colorful and made other soquilis have to look at them.

Vara caught the looks the stallion was giving to her markings. She was rather used to other soquili finding them strange by now. Some found them beautiful, others odd. She flipped some of her mane away from her back to allow him to better see them. She had pride in the symbols and patterns that had been passed down to her by her family. She had never had any shyness about showing them off.

"My family sometimes call ourselves the 'Lotus Blessed.' We tend to have markings like these and the flowers on my legs are the lotuses."

He watched as she flicked her mane out of his way, so he could have a better look at her markings. It was good to be proud of one's markings. It wasn't often that a soquili would run into two others that looked almost exactly alike. Apple never found himself showing off his markings, but he was very proud of them. Not many others had apples on them.

The stallion made sure to look at the flowers the mare was speaking of. "Lotus flowers huh?" Another thing learned by meeting another. His grey eyes looked down at the flower on his side. Of course, she probably knew it was the flowers that warned of apples in the future.

Vara followed his glance to his own flower and smiled warmly. "Yours is less unusual to see around here, perhaps, but no less beautiful." Vara had always believed that just because something was more familiar or common it was no less beautiful than the rare and exotic. Apple flowers or lotuses both bloomed and smelled sweetly and both were something to be treasured.

"Ah, and how silly of me," she chuckled. "I've told you about the lotuses but not even my name. You can call me Vara, if you wish. It's short for something much longer that I would never expect someone to remember after the first meeting."

He nodded and smiled at her comment. "Very less unusual. Thank you." Apple said at her last bit. His grey eyes landed on the hands with eyes in them. "Why are there hands on you?" Most likely the mare was asked this multiple times already.

"My name is Apple. Short for a name that isn't that long, but Apple is easier." He nodded a little and said the name in his head. Vara, most likely he didn't want to try to remember the other name.

"Apple. Very suiting." Her name wasn't without it's own significance but it would be too difficult to try to explain it to a relative stranger. It probably wasn't something he would be terribly interested in, either... but then again, he was asking other questions so perhaps he would be.

"The hands are on me because they were on one of my parents... but we do like to ascribe more significance to them than that." She smiled as she thought about it and remembered the time in her childhood when it had been first explained to her. "They're supposed to represent the commitment to caring for and helping others just as humans often help us. It's a philosophy I've tried my best to take to heart in the way I live my life." She chuckled, half joking with her next words. "There isn't anything you need help with, is there?"

He smiled at her words, most others seemed to same the same. Though, the name was suiting, he agreed with all of them. Most others remembered him as the stallion with the apples on his rump... or as the foals would say it the stallion with the apples on his butt. Apple chuckled at the thought of the foals he had run into in his past.

He listened to her words and what the hands symbolized. When she asked her last question, Apple shook his head. "No, I don't think I need anything." He thought about the hands for a moment. "So your family likes humans?" Apple had met a few soquili that didn't like humans or were afraid of them.

"Well, we like just about everyone." Vara gave a small chuckle and smiled amusedly. "It's one of our tenants to not judge others based on kind or appearance. I've tried to follow that the best as I can and teach my children the same... but some cases are more difficult than others." In particular she remembered back to her various encounters with kalonas and skinwalkers. She felt pity for them and their misguided ways... but her blood still ran a little colder when she thought back.

"Humans are no exception. I may not have as close ties with them as I have in the past but it is not due to any ill blood between us. I suppose it is more because until recently I hardly stayed in one place long enough to get to know the locals."

He smiled and nodded his head. His thought strayed to his family. The stallion wasn't too sure if they liked just about everyone as well. If not, he'd have to have a talk with his daughters... who were now adults. His ears flicked downwards a bit, but then perked back up when he remembered he was talking to another. "Its good to live by that. Not everyone who looks bad is bad and not everyone who looks nice is nice." He added in.

"I do believe my daughter is close with a human." His thoughts trailed back to when he first met his daughter. She was afraid of him, hiding behind a human. That memory somewhat broke the stallion's heart. Now, his daughter didn't fear him, but back then he was worried she would always fear him. See him as some giant male that looked like her.

Vara's smile faded into a look of worry at the stallion's changing expression. What could it be that bothered him so? She hadn't intended to tread on any sore subjects and it made her sad to see her new friend in such a state.

"Is there something that's bothering you?" she asked quietly. "You don't have to talk about it, of course... but I'm here to listen if you need someone to tell it to." There was an amazing amount of healing in the simple act of telling someone of your pain. Vara had seen the effects of this healing many times and had used it some herself. Pain kept inside would keep hurting.

An ear flicked towards the mare's question. There was something bothering him and this mare seemed like the type that wouldn't mind him telling her a problem of his. He looked towards her and nodded his head slightly. "I wasn't that good of a father." His ears flicked down for a second, but he brought them right back up.

"I didn't see my children as much as other fathers would and one of my daughters was even afraid of me when she was younger. She was more comfortable around a human than her own father." He hated to admit that, but it was the truth. From this point on, he would set out to be a better father. All he had to do was find his children and if they had mate, their mate. If he had grandchildren he'd be a wonderful grandfather for them.
