Best Play:
August: Osage County
It won the Pulitzer. Come on. Also, I really want to see it.

Best Musical:
In the Heights
Strangely, A Catered Affair won the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Musical. I've only seen Xanadu, but I think that this is this year's 'Little Musical that Could.' It seems to be a growing trend for the Tonys, especially since Mermaid and Frankenstein were both not nominated.

Best Book of a Musical
Xanadu, Douglas Carter Beane
Only because I saw it and it was incredibly hilarious.

Best Original Score
Cry-Baby, Music & Lyrics: David Javerbaum & Adam Schlesinger
In The Heights, Music & Lyrics: Lin-Manuel Miranda
The Little Mermaid, Music: Alan Menken and Lyrics: Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater
Passing Strange, Music: Stew and Heidi Rodewald Lyrics: Stew
I haven't heard any but the old Mermaid songs... so I don't know.

Best Revival of a Play
The Homecoming
Only because Raul Esparza is basically my life

Best Revival of a Musical
Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific
Sunday in the Park With George
I really want Sunday to win (I see it in 3 days!) but South Pacific has been doing really well, regardless of how dated I think it is.

Best Performance By a Leading Actor in a Musical
Paulo Szot, Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific
Apparently he is really good in this role.

Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical
Patti LuPone, Gypsy
If Patti doesn't win this, I would be surprised.

Best Performance By a Featured Actor in a Play
Raúl Esparza, The Homecoming
Because he is amazing, and he needs a Tony

Best Direction of a Play
Anna D. Shapiro, August: Osage County
The best play and best director normally go hand in hand.

Best Direction of a Musical
Sam Buntrock, Sunday in the Park with George
Thomas Kail, In The Heights
Arthur Laurents, Gypsy
Bartlett Sher, Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific
I really don't know, since all are supposed to be amazing.

Best Choreography
Dan Knechtges, Xanadu
He used Roller Skates. How can he not win.

Best Lighting Design of a Musical
Ken Billington, Sunday in the Park with George
Apparently the projection system is absolutely amazing.

Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre
Stephen Sondheim
Wait... he hasn't won this yet?! WTF Tony Award committee? Maybe you have to reach a certain age, but he's already 70+.

It's hard to make educated choices for the Tony's when you're a poor college student in the Midwest crying . If I could afford to go to NY to see a lot of these shows, I would! 3nodding

I've heard about most of these shows, and there are some that I really REALLY want to see... cry ... crying

Sadness. I do like to pick the winners for the Oscar's, the Emmy's and some of the Grammy's.

Seconded on the poor midwestern college student issue. I've seen professional shows, but never one on Broadway. Maybe if I get enough work as an overhire next year, I'll be able to make a trip, but that's a big if.

Personally, I'm pulling for Tom Stoppard, but then again, I'm a Stoppard fangirl. I don't think anything could be quite as EPIC as Coast of Utopia, but something about Stoppard+Marxism+Rock music= me wanting to shriek with glee.

Which brings me to my next point: I've also got an incredible bias towards Cry Baby. I'm a little obsessed with the movie. John Waters is MADE of cult classic win, plus, Johnny Depp singing Rockabilly music? Is there anything hotter? No there isn't. The musical seems like it would be just as campy- if not campier- than the original. Or at least, by putting it on a Broadway stage, give it more allowance to BE campy (Hairspray, anybody?).
